Topic Low vision weldng: possible? By CLH1978 Date 11-10-2015 16:06
Hi Medcoguy.

Welcome to the AWS weld forum. Have you performed any welding or been around welding. The only way to know for sure is to try it. Find a buddy with a welder, try a demo at a weld supply shop, career fairs, local high or tech schools. I have worked or met with numerous people who have overcome all sorts of health issues and work in the welding field.
Topic Welder procedure Qualification D1.2 By CLH1978 Date 11-04-2015 22:26
Hi Whatever. I feel your pain. Learning to understand the AWS codes and standards can be stressful.
We use time to time the D1.2 2008 copy. Table 3.8 states that groove welds on plate also qualify fillet welds. Under nominal plate thickness qualified, note c is indicated. Note c states that fillet welds are qualified to unlimited thickness. Unlimited thickness to me is no minimum and no maximum.
   Hope this helps.
Topic I've never welded By CLH1978 Date 07-07-2015 21:13
Welcome Pops. You have never welded? Maybe ,before making a purchase, see if you could use someone's welder to see if you would like it. You might be able to use a demo at a welding supply store or check out a community college, or high school program.

Al, thank you for getting me straight on the skewed T-joint. I have always appreciated the time and effort that you and so many others spend volunteering information to the forum.

Good morning Al. Thank you for replying.
D1.1 is the applying code. Your thoughts are that the joint is a skewed T-joint?
        I appreciate everyone's comments.

Topic Weld joint By CLH1978 Date 06-18-2015 17:02
Hi Everyone. Does anyone think that a skewed fillet weld is involved in this joint? My thinking is the portion of the weld sized as a fillet is correct and skewed would have no part in the joint design or weld size.
Topic Weld joint By CLH1978 Date 06-17-2015 13:10
Hi aevald. Thank you for responding. Your drawing is close. The obtuse angle off the pipe is straight at 120 degrees, with a inside acute angle creating the bevel groove. Welding is performed only at the left side of your drawing.
Topic Weld joint By CLH1978 Date 06-16-2015 19:27
Good day to everyone. I have a question regarding a formed pipe flange. The forming creates a lip over the pipe as the pipe passes thru it. The weld symbol is a PJP single bevel with a fillet weld symbol below it. The weld is completed in one pass, in the horizontal position. The top surface of the formed lip is a obtuse angle of 120 degrees from the pipe.
Would the fillet part of the weld be considered a skewed fillet weld or a reinforcing weld or something else?
Because of proprietary reasons I am not allowed to post a pic or drawing.

      Thanks for reading.

Topic 5086 Alum vs 6061 By CLH1978 Date 05-08-2012 14:12
Hi eekpod. If I have to bend 6061 I will heat the material up to 750 F and then immediately immerse into water. The material will be more ductile for bending. You will lose some short term material tensile strength. I believe long term, the material will age and regain most of its orginal tensile strength. Of course you have to be really carefully with the heating as not to marr the material or have discolor. I would also recomend testing before using this method for any critical load bearing structure.

Hi rshanks. Note e would come into play when writting or applying a wps to be used for welder qualifications. Depending on the range of material dimensions in specific joint wps's, more than one welder qualification maybe necessary to perform the welding.

Topic Galvanize SS By CLH1978 Date 09-28-2010 18:21
Good afternoon to all. Is it possible to galvanize materials consisting of 316L ss welded to mild steel? Filler material used is 309LHsi. Hsi is for high silicon. Has anyone even seen stainless galvanized?

Special project and application. Galvanizing is just one option being looked at.

Topic 6F Qualification By CLH1978 Date 07-23-2009 14:06
Good morning everyone. I see the Welding Inspection Technology book also shows a 6F position. The AWS professional welding competition for 2009 is a pipe and plate weld in the 6F position. This competition will be judged to D1.1 criteria. A little confusing. I know the code book takes precedence. but change the drawing for the 5F to reflect the multiply positions.
Topic WPS documention. By CLH1978 Date 04-08-2009 16:34
Thanks guys for answering. Currently we use AWS codes. We file the UT report with the PQR qualification
records. Our engineers, QA dept, all have access to those files. I'm just making sure that is good enough
documentation. Thanks again!
Topic WPS documention. By CLH1978 Date 03-27-2009 20:32
Good afternoon everyone. Have a question on documenting the results of a UT. When you ut a procedure qualification, do you note somewhere on the pqr or wps that the qualification is for a static or cyclically loaded stucture? Thanks in advance for any info.
Topic Metal core vs flux core By CLH1978 Date 10-14-2008 15:09
Hi folks. We have used metal core for almost 20 years. Robotics, automatic equipment, semi-automatic. Our
production welding is flat and horizontal positions. But we have had also qualified many vertical and overhead welds, both fillet and groove to aws D1.1 for repairs and special projects. We weld carbon and HSLA steels.
Topic D1.1 welder qualification-fillet weld By CLH1978 Date 10-07-2008 15:28
My company would like to qualify an outside welder to perform repair welds on a piece of equipment too D1.1
We need to qualify this individual 3F, 4F quickly. Our in-house welders are all qualified using groove
welds and we also have numerous fillet weld wps's. My superiors feel that the groove weld qualification would
take too long.
My question is this. Can we qualify this welder on 1/4" material following our wps, or do we have to qualify
on 1/2" material per Figure 4.37, D1.1 2006. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated !!!!!
Topic I am a newb. CWI another wps? By CLH1978 Date 04-23-2008 14:59
See Table 4.2 for wps qualifications. Read 4.8.2 on NDT.
Table 4.11 is for welder qualification. Finish your wps first.
Topic I am a newb. CWI another wps? By CLH1978 Date 04-22-2008 21:18
Double check section 3 for prequalified conformance. If you end up qualifying your wps you will have too
Rt or Ut.

The project has both dissimilar material and 304L to 304L. We are trying to prevent setup and/or have
multiple machines to do the work. I don't know the filler mat. costs. We not ready for bulk buying yet.
