Mark Rothko, 1960, untitled. He studied art at Yale and at the Art Student's League in New York City in the early 1920s. By 1943 he was associated with Abstract Expressionists including Jackson Pollock, Clyfford Still, Willem de Kooning, Helen Frankenthaler and others. The term meant that their art made no reference to the material world, yet it was highly expressive, conveying strong emotional content.
