why arca

the problem is usually boring.

The cryptography usually did not fail. The phone died. The office flooded. The founder became unavailable. The family found a seed plate with no wallet name, passphrase, or instructions. Small operational mistakes can lock up very large parts of a life or business.

the phone is gone

The authenticator, password manager, email session, and screenshots of recovery codes all lived on the same phone or cloud account. The replacement phone asks for a code from the phone that is gone.

Why arca: root recovery codes and instructions live in a separate physical system with independent authentication, not inside the device they are meant to recover.

Travel note: with advance setup, arca is intended to support leaving a primary phone at home while crossing a border, then rebuilding selected access on a new device after arrival. It is a continuity plan, not automatic phone cloning or a guarantee about border outcomes; it only covers recovery paths prepared and tested in advance.

What is arca?

arca is a physical digital safe for the secrets you do not want floating around your life. Seed words, recovery codes, passwords, emergency notes, business keys, signing material, and encrypted files get a dedicated box with hardware custody, sync rules, and recovery rules.

What can arca store?

arca is for the small, ugly things that hold everything together: seed words, recovery codes, passwords, runbooks, inheritance notes, business keys, important encrypted files, and the instructions someone will need when the normal path is gone.

How are my files encrypted?

Each file is stored as its own authenticated AES-256-GCM encrypted blob. File contents and metadata use separate tenant-derived keys; sensitive never-export files can be encrypted inside arca's security controller, leaving only a wrapped payload key outside it. The key hierarchy is rooted in a custom secure-element subsystem: an STM32H5 security controller with TrustZone, plus ATECC608C and DS28C36BQ+T secure-element chips. Under the per-file encryption, the FreeBSD storage device is protected again with GELI full-disk encryption using a separate key from the secure subsystem. A removed drive should contain only a disk-encrypted image of individually encrypted, integrity-checked blobs. This design is still pre-production and may change before release.

What is an arca swarm?

An arca swarm is two or more boxes mirroring an isolated encrypted tenant across trusted places. More than one box removes a device and building as the only recovery path; additional boxes can add geographic and jurisdictional diversity.

Can arca back up into someone else's arca?

Yes. Isolated spaces mean an encrypted backup can live in a friend's, partner's, or hosted arca without handing them the contents. Think reciprocal safes, not a shared cloud folder.

How is arca different from a password manager or NAS?

A password manager helps you log in every day. A NAS stores a lot of files. arca is for the layer under both: root credentials, recovery codes, signing material, emergency instructions, and the rules for who can recover what.

How does inheritance readiness work?

Do not make family decode your digital life under stress. arca is meant to let selected material become recoverable by the right people under defined conditions. Not everything to everyone; the right packet to the right person.

How does arca help teams?

Every company has the bad version of this: one founder, one admin, one laptop, one SaaS account, one person who remembers the ritual. arca is meant to turn those fragile access paths into a custody plan the team can survive.

Can AI agents use arca?

Agents are going to need credentials and files. Pasting secrets into a chat window is a bad answer. Giving an agent the whole vault is also a bad answer. arca is being designed around narrow requests, policy checks, and constrained paths such as SSH.

Can arca sign Bitcoin transactions?

arca is being built with an embedded COLDCARD signing emulator. It is intended to work as a remote co-signer in a multisig wallet or as the signer for a dedicated single-sig wallet. We are also porting CK Bunker-style policy-controlled HSM functions. These interfaces are still in development.

What hardware is arca targeting?

Current target hardware is specific: Rockchip RK3328 running FreeBSD, Arm Cortex-M33 with TrustZone, ATECC608C and DS28C36BQ+T secure elements, secure RTC, motion sensor, active tamper-detect circuit, two USB inputs, Power Over Ethernet (PoE), and internal UPS. Design and specs will likely change as arca progresses through manufacturing.
