Subject: Siege of Port Hudson
Subject: Siege of Port Hudson
In 1999, my two sons and I were invited to be part of a team that built trails through a privately owned portion of the original 1863 Port Hudson battleground. During our work, we uncovered several pieces of exploded cannon balls and a few Civil War era bullets from the battle. Last year, I purchased an original print published in the July 18, 1863 Harper's Weekly of Union forces removing dead and wounded soldiers from the battlefield. Reading the first hand account of that battle as originally published was a chilling reminder of the incredible courage witnessed on both sides of that horrible conflict.
