I know that I am an old white guy but I don't know how this came to be seen as so racially insensitive. In retrospect I can see that the illustrations
...
were simplistic but THIS IS A KID'S BOOK. And compared to anything else printed for children in England and America at that time, it is an uplifting story. Here an Indian child that outsmarts the tigers and is rewarded by a huge amount of pancakes. What's wrong with that?

Thanks to Internet Archive for including this story. I cannot express what a thrill it is to have come across the exact edition I recall my parents reading
...
to myself and my siblings so long ago. Through the eyes of a young child, this story was simply captivating. So beautifully written and illustrated. I recall the joy and relief that the beautiful clothes were retrieved and the tigers turned in to delicious pancakes. An absolute classic.

So much fun to read again as my mother had read to me many times when I was young and growing up.
