A year before Sputnik!
I was only interested in the satellite article. It was already recognized that the FIRST to launch a satellite would have immense propaganda value. I'm surprised that the US didn't try harder. I suppose that there was no way to know what the Russia satellite program was doing. To we of the 21st century it seems obvious that they'd use their ICBM to launch Sputnik. That's what the USA did for its first one.
