I love most of the bands that came out of this particular scene, and Heretoir is a particular favorite. There are great slow, mournful passages here, ambient moments with muted pianos, some blastbeats-and-bellowing sections that are still more morose than aggressive, and even some epic clean singing, all in service to a unifying concept album about the conflict between wilderness and machine.

Everything comes together extremely well in this album. Probably my all time favorite black metal album now. The mix of atmospheric almost shoegaze playing leads extremely well into the intensity black metal normally has. The saxophone they use on almost all the songs really puts it above others in the genre for me.

I'm 42. I've been an avid music fan and a massive metalhead since I was 11. This might be the most beautiful album I have ever heard. I have no words beyond that.

Well, after listening to Death and Black Metal for over 35 years, it sometimes gets boring, even if bands try to innovate. But then you stumble upon an album, which immediately clicks: it fresh, but familiar. It’s emotional, intelligent and complex, but not for complexities’ sake. It flows, it works, it’s authentic. This album is absolutely great, it’s all I want from this kind of music: cold soundscapes, raging fires, the embrace of darkness. 10/10
