Atlantic Jaxx presents Basement Jaxx “Bambina feat. Martina Camargo (Mixes).
Felix explains the evolution of the track;
The idea for “Bambina” first came while hearing a couple of Mexican guys busking—playing guitars on the NYC subway—with my baby daughter. The raw spirit and life in their music filled my heart. I thought, that’s what I want to play when I DJ in Brooklyn tonight. And just like that, a song was born—one about the hope and beauty of our little future humans.
After writing an English version of the song with Simon and Andrea Terrano playing guitars, I thought how wonderful it would be to collaborate on the track with an authentic South American vocalist.
Martina Camargo, considered one of the most important figures in Tambora—a traditional genre from Colombia’s Caribbean coast blending African, European, and Indigenous influences—is renowned for her powerful, percussion-led performances.
Though her voice has been sampled in global club tracks like “ El Sueño,” she had never collaborated directly with an electronic music artist—until now.
The idea for this collaboration resonated deeply with her. Moved by the song’s spirit and its message of hope for future generations, Martina rewrote it in Spanish with her own poetic lyrics and a new melody, bringing her unique soulful energy to the project.
She worked alongside Dr. Manuel García-Orozco, an ethnomusicologist and professor at Boston Conservatory at Berklee. A specialist in traditional Colombian music, García-Orozco has been nominated for five Latin Grammy Awards and won one—Best Folk Album in 2021 for Ancestras by Petrona Martínez. His deep cultural knowledge aligned perfectly with Martina’s spiritual and shamanic musical approach.
Since Martina typically performs only with drums and doesn’t speak English, the song remains entirely in Spanish—honouring her voice, tradition, and the ancestral power of Tambora.
It is an honour to have her on this track. A version was DJ’d to a crowd of 35,000 in a New Zealand park this spring, and again at Hï Ibiza to open the summer season—both times receiving an incredible response.
While the next Basement Jaxx album is set for release next spring—following a busy summer of headline festival shows—we’re excited to share a couple of versions of this special collaboration with you now.
