"Australia's ghost signs are fading reminders of the businesses, communities and hand-painted advertisements that once shaped our streets. By translating the timeworn signwriting onto a pair of sneakers, the work reimagines everyday footwear as mobile pieces of the streetscape, giving these fading landmarks a renewed life beyond the walls they once occupied." - Donovan Christie 🏙️ This is "Sole Proprietor 1" and "Sole Proprietor 2" by Donovan Christie Visual Artist as part of Sole Purpose: Sneakers for Change, a project by Hutt St Centre and Rundna. Congratulations to our Diabetes Educator, Rema, on being awarded as the Early Career Winner of the prestigious Abbott Case Study Competition by the Australian Diabetes Educators Association, recognising excellence and innovation in diabetes education and clinical practice. 👏🏆 Rema's case study was on the successful diabetes management journey of one of our visitors at Hutt St Centre, that has changed and ultimately saved his life. Rema shares, "I believe it (this award) reflects the impact that our services can have on the lives of people experiencing homelessness. I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to work alongside such a dedicated team and for the support that has enabled me to contribute to improving health outcomes." There are only three Diabetes Educators working within a homelessness centre in all of Australia, and we are so thankful to Rema for the brilliant work she is doing to help people facing homelessness manage their health and diabetes. 🧡

"During the process of creating this unique pair of sneakers I spent lots of time in the Belair National Park, surrounded by the sights and sounds of nature. I had thoughts of feeling completely free and not part of the increasing global issues that face us all. I dreamed of everyone being unbounded and released of daily pressures and what it would be like to be a completely free soul." - Joe Whale 🍃 This is "NOMAD" by Joe Whale, known as The doodle boy, as part of Sole Purpose: Sneakers for Change, a project by Hutt St Centre and @rundna_ You could own this one-of-a-kind New Balance sneaker artwork created by Joe Whale by bidding online at: huttst.org/SolePurpose. "I have covered this shoe with embroidery using my hands to stitch detailed images that lift my spirits. Faces, eyes of human connection, birds, flowers, my symbols of happiness. Birds are creatures of the skies, they symbolize freedom, finding a voice and spiritual connection. They can ‘fly free’ to escape and find a path of hope." - Cheryl Bridgart 🪽 This is "Lifting the Spirits" and "Fly Free" by Cheryl Bridgart as part of Sole Purpose: Sneakers for Change, a project by Hutt St Centre and RunDna. "I was never interested in painting or drawing until two years ago I walked into the art hub at the Hutt St Centre. While I still consider myself a hack rather than an “artist,” I have tried to convey my journey on these shoes from my first tentative watercolour steps to now playing with abstract colour acrylic works." "Someone famous once said every journey starts with that first single step. This is a first step for me. I never expected to be homeless, but it’s all about how you play the cards you have been dealt with." - Aaron 🎨 This is "My Steps So Far" by Aaron as part of Sole Purpose: Sneakers for Change, a project by Hutt St Centre and RunDna. "The discontinuation of the New Balance 624 line prompted me to think of the shoes as relics or artefacts of a previous era (albeit a very recent one). As such, I have applied a kind of gridding and plotting in a manner reminiscent of an archaeologist surveying a potential site." - Roy Ananda. 🔍 Introducing "EXO624" by Roy Ananda as part of Sole Purpose: Sneakers for Change, a project by Hutt St Centre and Rundna.
