Until 1986, women were not permitted underground or to enter mines in WA. Fast forward to 2022 and according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, there were 45,000 women employed full time in the mining industry in Australia. I am one of those 45,000. Career Fun Day is happening at my daughters school today. Kids go to school dressed as what they want to be when they grow up. I have always told my daughter that education is one of the most important aspects in life as a good education and good grades provides more opportunities and career options when she leaves school. I want her to be able to choose what she wants to do when she leaves school and not be limited. When discussing with her what she wanted to dress up as, she suggested careers like: a Youtuber (so she can play Roblox all day), a Teacher, a Doctor, then a Zoo Keeper (she LOVES Capybaras’). Not once did it cross my mind to limit her choices to typical/historical female type roles. Last night, during a conversation, my father (a retired house builder) commented that he needed help rebuilding a retaining wall as the concrete blocks were quite large and heavy. I offered my assistance to which he replied, “that’s a man’s job”. I was speechless and the look on my face was not a good one. Once I calmed down, I took time to really appreciate the changing perceptions of younger generations (Boomers, Gen X, Gen Y etc) than my fathers (Silent Generation), and that my daughter (Gen Alpha) is growing up knowing that she can do and be anything she wants when she grows up. Hopefully never hearing someone say to her “that’s a man’s job”. I have worked the majority of my career in mining and heavy industry, and over the years have seen more and more gender equality in mining. It is not just a moral imperative, but a fundamental necessity for fostering a fair and inclusive society. Embracing gender equality is a collaborative effort and I commend my daughter’s school for their commitment to dismantle systemic inequalities and create an education system where all kids will grow up thriving based on their merits and talents, rather than their gender. #GenderEquility #WomenInMining

Expectations vs Reality Some of the most productive outcomes come out of the hardest conversations. I've had clients reach out to me in regards to what experience they expect from contractors on their site, 5+ years post trade, all the machine experience, 5+ years experience FIFO, Breakdown experience.... For minimal charge. We can provide almost any level of experience, and we are transparent with our candidates and clients in regards to expectations and experience. Over the years this conversation has gone from scary to welcomed. This becomes a teachable moment, I'm happy to take onboard certain feedback, but I'm also happy to give feedback. It usually goes like this - "100% get what you are saying, but the reality of the market, and what it would cost as a charge rate for that level of experience doesn't match our current charge rate. I'm more than happy to communicate your expectations to the team, as long as there is flexibility around the charge rate..." The reply is usually met with silence and then some negotiation. Either a negotiation on the expectation vs the current charge rate, or a negotiation on the expectation for a new charge rate. Leadership: It’s About People, Not Positions Over the years, working in the mining sector, I’ve come to realise that leadership isn’t about holding a certain title or position—it’s about how you show up for others. Leadership is: • Listening and Communicating: Hearing your team and ensuring everyone is on the same page. Clarity fosters trust and collaboration. • Building Others Up: Empowering those around you to make mistakes, learn from them and grow. A team that feels supported will always outperform. • Facing Challenges Head-On: Leadership is about staying calm, solution-focused, and rallying your team when the pressure is on. • Walking the Talk: Leading by example through hard work, integrity, and consistency. For me, leadership has been about contributing to an environment where people feel valued and motivated. Whether it’s planning projects, solving problems, or just being there for the team, it’s always about putting others first. I’d love to hear how others define leadership. I'm wanting to find some casual or part time work in the coal mining industry, delivering coaching and mentoring to leadership and emergency response teams. Specifically, there are elements of aviation CRM (crew resource management), which can have significant benefit in industry. Aviation Crew Resource Management, while specific to the aviation industry, has applicability to other industries with a high focus on safety. CRM focuses on: • Communication Skills: Effective communication is crucial in CRM to ensure clear and concise information exchange among crew members and other stakeholders. • Situational Awareness: Understanding and maintaining awareness of the current environment and anticipating future states, which is critical for decision-making and safety in an emergency response environment. • Decision Making: Training should focus on developing the ability to make informed and timely decisions, especially under pressure or in complex situations. • Leadership & Team Building: These skills help in managing team dynamics, ensuring effective collaboration, and utilising the strengths of each team member. • Threat & Error Management (TEM): This involves identifying potential threats and errors, implementing strategies to manage them, and learning from past experiences to improve safety. • Pressure & Stress Management: Understanding how to manage stress and pressure is vital for maintaining performance levels during challenging situations. • Fatigue Management: Educating crew members on recognising signs of fatigue and implementing strategies to mitigate its effects can enhance safety and performance. • Workload Management: This includes skills for prioritising tasks, delegating responsibilities, and managing workload effectively to prevent overload. • Automation & Technology Management: Training should cover the integration of technology in operations, including how to manage automated systems effectively. • Interpersonal Relationships: Enhancing interpersonal skills can improve teamwork, conflict resolution, and overall crew cohesion. I'm an experienced emergency services professional and hold all the requisite qualifications specific to the role. As part of SA Water's Zero Cost Energy Future (ZCEF) project, SA Water and EPC Contractor Enerven engaged SAGE Automation to deliver the control systems for the ZCEF Solar and Battery Infrastructure Project, delivered across two phases. In phase 1, SAGE designed and engineered the Energy Management System (EMS) and SCADA integration for more than 160 solar inverters and then engineered and built three containerised 'switch rooms' to house the solar inverters, power distribution switchboard, and the EMS. Phase 2 of the project involved deploying and connecting more than 350,000 solar panels across 33 of SA Water’s existing sites, both in metropolitan and regional asset locations and the extensive programming and interfacing required to connect, control and monitor onsite generation assets. SAGE delivered a bespoke control system (Power Management System) that autonomously manages energy generation, conversion, and allocation for solar and grid-derived energy, connecting a range of new solar systems and maximising operational efficiency.
