  • Inclusion during school absence: Using ambient technology to create a classroom presence for hospitalised children

    Telecommunications Journal of Australia

In this paper, we investigate the use of ambient technology to create a classroom presence for hospitalised children. We present results from four case studies, each of which included data from hospitalised children, their parents, classmates and teachers (at both school and hospital). Primary school-aged children from both metropolitan and rural areas were included. Data collected at both the hospital and the classroom were analysed to investigate children's experience of the ambient…

In this paper, we investigate the use of ambient technology to create a classroom presence for hospitalised children. We present results from four case studies, each of which included data from hospitalised children, their parents, classmates and teachers (at both school and hospital). Primary school-aged children from both metropolitan and rural areas were included. Data collected at both the hospital and the classroom were analysed to investigate children's experience of the ambient technology and their desire to be aware of the presence of their peers, from both ends of the hospital-school setting. The results indicate that ambient technology is positive at fostering a mutual sense of presence, from the perspective of the hospitalised children, their family, teachers and classmates.

  • Creating A Classroom Presence For Hospitalised Children

ICT in Education Victoria (ICTEV) 2012 State Conference

Significant barriers exist for hospitalised children in terms of continuity of education and connection to school and peer groups. In our proof-of-concept, we built and trialled the use of an ‘ambient orb’ to create a classroom presence for four hospitalised children (9-11 years). The children controlled classroom orbs via a web-based application and bedside netbooks. The ambient orb was effective in alerting teachers and schoolmates to a hospitalised child’s desire to connect with their…

In our proof-of-concept, we built and trialled the use of an ‘ambient orb’ to create a classroom presence for four hospitalised children (9-11 years). The children controlled classroom orbs via a web-based application and bedside netbooks. The ambient orb was effective in alerting teachers and schoolmates to a hospitalised child’s desire to connect with their classroom and peers, without requiring sophisticated two-way communication channels. We are now extending the project to create a sense of presence across the hospital–home–school spectrum.

  • “Lucy’s always with us”: overcoming absence from school through ambient orb technology

    Global Learn Asia Pacific 2011

Abstract: When children are in hospital for a period of time and are absent from the classroom, there is a risk that ‘out of sight, out of mind’ may contribute to the disconnection with school. There is, therefore, a need for a more effective approach to the provision of education support that utilises available technologies. This proof-of-concept research is trialing the creation of a presence for hospitalised children in their school classroom through the use of broadband-enabled ambient…

There is, therefore, a need for a more effective approach to the provision of education support that utilises available technologies. This proof-of-concept research is trialing the creation of a presence for hospitalised children in their school classroom through the use of broadband-enabled ambient technologies. The ‘ambient orb’ has been effective in alert teachers and schoolmates to a hospitalized child’s desire to connect with their classroom and peers, without requiring the need to establish communication.

As sensor network deployments grow and mature there emerge a common set of operations and transformations. These can be grouped into a conceptual framework called Sensor Web. Sensor Web combines cyber infrastructure with a Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) and sensor networks to provide access to heterogeneous sensor resources in a deployment independent manner. In this chapter we present the Open Sensor Web Architecture (OSWA), a platform independent middleware for developing sensor applications. OSWA is built upon a uniform set of operations and standard data representations as defined in the Sensor Web Enablement Method (SWE) by the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC). OSWA uses open source and grid technologies to meet the challenging needs of collecting and analyzing observational data and making it accessible for aggregation, archiving and decision making.
