RockPaperWater

A range of greetings card designs from my original watercolour paintings. Using 20 odd years of London based design experience, and a lifetime of drawing and painting, now I'm back in the lakes, (my family have been here for centuries). An MA Fine Art from Central St Martins - then things went a bit Guerrilla Girls, and Lockdown changed things.

The barn above Hartsop in the lake District
A geetings card based on my watercolour painting, from a walk to the end of that valley.
Daylilies, Peony, Dahlia, Clematis painting.
A watercolour painting waiting to be artworked and added to the greetings card colllection.
Flower painting - garden wish list collection
Lockdown turned the focus on watercolour painting into highly detailed fantasy garden flower collections, inspired by some of the beautiful gardens of contemporary flower growers and florists. They are the perfect escape from limited freedomes - fantasy and the power of the imagination, plus the escapism offerd by concentration. #Daylily #Tulip #Camellia #anemone #poppy
An armful of tulips
Vicarious gardening with multi coloured tulips - they took as long to paint as to grow, nearly. I think I'm going to make art prints of this, big, life-sized.
From Shakespeare to Baudelaire. 6 feet square and urchased by The Corinthia hotel.
Textured tree and rocks
Sketchbook - A3 double page - of gnarled tree and pocked rocks on Farleton Knot

More hedgerows - where a tiny sprig turned into a big drawing and then into this focused fragment. Blackberry blossom.

A long view from the top of my local hill, watching rain clouds catch over Coniston before breaking free to head my way. #LakeDistrict #Sketchbook #landscapedrawing

The Knots and Scars around the north end of Morecambe Bay and the southern edges of the Lake District offer spectacular views but are generally disregarded as not being proper lakes - locals love them. This was a quick sketch in a howling gale - the Langdales were clutching a rainstorm and Kentmere was wreathed in rainbows, but this bit of the view caught my eye. #LakeDistrict #ScoutScar #MorecambeBay #Arnside

An early watercolour from Loughrigg Fell looking south. One I discarded and have only just come back to. #Windermere #LakeDistrict

It took a minute, a quick hedgerow drawing on a boiling hot day in June.

Here's the same drawing but experimenting with colour on colour rather than black on white. It's low res so detail has been lost, but then a bit more definition has emerged by default.

This is a sketch I've revisited - out of sight and mind for a long while but there's something useful about it. It's one I've had scanned and am considering experimenting with it as colour line on a colour background. Over Blea Water towards Riggindale with trails of rain - one of the reasons for the name RockPaperWater, watching monumental rainstorms change the visual substance of mountains. #sketchbook #landscapedrawing #lakedistrict #englishlakedistrict #linedrawing
