I would love to see the Aurora Borealis someday, but for now I'll settle for teaching it! I think the kids will really enjoy the freedom of this project, although we will learn about Aurora Borealis and look at photos, ultimately they will create their own colors in the sky. It's that time of year...when the pumpkins and turkeys are sent home and the winter art takes center stage! I wanted to do a quick one-day lesson with my 5th and 6th graders using chalk pastels and repeated lines to create an abstract landscape. I think I should have spent more time on color temperatures and what colors would BEST represent snow...before letting them loose on this project. Here are two examples of student work depicting (almost) exactly what we were going for.
