Fixated on a mythological depiction of nature, Japanese artist Ishibashi Yui sculpts feral children that appear to belong to another realm of reality. Pallid, hairless human bodies become fused with roots and vines, brought to life through a mixture of wood, resin, clay, wire and paint. Oftentimes, the figures appear imprisoned by the flora. Some refer to them as glass and stone enchantments, others as tomb-like and unsettling, but to artist Christina Bothwell, her work is highly spiritual. Her translucent figures rising from their bodies evoke images of a butterfly emerging from its chrysalis, feeling mutually protected and secure but also fragile in spite of their hardy material. In Yuanxing Liang’s folkloric sculptures, the hair of his figures become their own whimsical landscapes. Liang, formerly a game character designer, is now a full time artist, often working within fantastical figurative sculpture. Many have noted the challenge of displaying his work, as each pieces comes fully realized and detailed, 360 degrees of intricate notes from the artist.

Faces are distorted in extraordinary ways in this sculptor's surreal work. Perhaps they are visualizations of internal struggles. What do you think?
