From home. This week I baked peanut butter cookies. As I did so I felt very much in the moment. I made a batch cooked some rolled the dough into balls and froze the rest. It's a great trick for small families like mine where you don't want a dozen cookies on the counter. As I baked and prepped it felt wonderful to have something for my hands to do. I realized it's one of the few times this week I've felt truly mindful and haven't thought about work or about the pandemic. If you want to go give
Confession? I (Sarah) haven't scrolled my feed for awhile because what I'm seeing is bumming me out. SLPs treating telepractice like a burden. Or like an impossible summit to climb. Me? I am thankful for telepractice. I've been doing it for more than six years now and it's changed my life. It has allowed me to work with clients who otherwise wouldn't get service It has allowed me to build my clinical skills as I use even more creativity and flexibility in my sessions It has allowed me to work
We believe we can be the helpers no matter how small we believe our contributions feel. We believe we can (and must) do better for those whose livelihoods require contact with society at large at this time - the front line workers. This includes medical workers city workers police firefighters EMTs those working in grocery stores and pharmacies - and more. We appreciate you. We'd love to hear about your loved one on the front lines in the comments.
Sarah here with an adoption update. For those who don't know my husband and I are currently adopting a child from China. We are a world away from our child with no timeline of when we can meet them. There are moments where this feels unbelievably difficult. We are hoping that our paperwork can be processed (it's in Washington DC now when it's approved it'll go to China) soon. With the virus there are no expected timelines. We had planned to come home this summer with our child. That is no lon
We love to read and know many of you do too. Whether you are social distancing right now or just like to read (or like us - both) here are some of Sarah's nonfiction recommendations: Wolfpack by Abby Wambach Zero Waste Home by Bea Johnson So You Want To Talk About Race by Ijeoma Oluo The Power of Showing Up by Daniel Siegel and Tina Bryson That said I'm feeling very ready to switch to fiction for awhile now. Any fiction recommendations?
We're having a hard time and aren't on here much lately. Chances are you may be feeling the same. What is a human to do? The only way we can all be strong right now is if we are stronger together. Our hope and prayer right now is that we can all come together as a community right now. It's truly our only hope. Sending you love. This is hard. You are strong. We can move forward. (Special shout out to @salt_bythesea for the mantra - she learned it from her grandmother.)
Well when we recorded this episode we talked about enegaging with people IRL and getting away from screens. Then happened. We still think you should listen to this episode. Why? In this episode we discuss: The link between technology and stress Tips for SLPs working to reduce screen time Also: Sarah shares a real life example of SLP shaming and the cohosts talk about what to do about it (and how SLP shaming is similar to bullying at work) A lesson gone wrong involving a Are you an asker
Want to know a secret? We've cried a lot in the past week. Things have felt hard. For us. For you. But we also have a quiet (but still present) sense of optimism. That we can move through fear to love That we will be OK That our government can come together to help its citizens at a time we need our leaders to work together for our survival That as a culture we can move past the chaotic fear of realizing what we are up against and move toward feeling connected to the whole - connecting to
It's St Patrick's Day and we are aren't feeling as lucky as we have in previous years. But we've been reading about negativity bias and forcing ourselves to list out five positives each day. It doesn't make anything else seem less serious but it does give us a few moments each day with a positivity bias - even if it's just for a moment or two. Here are ours. Sarie cherry blossoms sunshine FaceTime & phone calls cookie dough ice cream and kitty snuggles. Sarah Homemade ginger cookies friends I
We love you. We choose to believe that humans can rise to this occasion and help each other.
Dear internet I know not everyone reading this knows my personal story. That's OK. You don't know how I've had to stay off my feed and stories because I've seen things that are in bad taste hurtful and just plain racist. You also don't know the personal stories of the hundreds (or more) of people reading your content. Let's be more mindful. Let's be kinder. If you are with me please share this message or your own thoughts on this with others as we build a more mindful conversation. Sarah

Get messy. Make mistakes. Take it with a lighthearted attitude. We are all growing and growing just isn't easy. You've got this. Sarah here. I'm reposting this oldie but goodie because lately I've been doing a lotof new stuff. And you know what? Learning new stuff can be frustrating. My work isn't what I want it to be. It's my reminder - and yours too - that the only thing that makes it easier is to keep going.
