Mark McManus played the lead role in Taggart for 11 years until his death in 1994, aged 59. The son of a miner, and an ex-boxer himself, Glaswegian McManus would not compromise on accents and always pronounced "police" as "polis". A fan of Detective Chief Inspector Jim Taggart won an award at the 2013 Scottish Tattoo Convention with his depiction of the Glasgow skyline alongside McManus's face.
