The Norns (Old Norse: norn, plural: nornir) in Norse mythology are female beings who rule the destiny of gods and men, and are comparable to the Moirai (also called "The Fates") in Greek mythology. The three most important norns were Urðr (Wyrd), Verðandi and Skuld. Described as three powerful maiden giantesses (Jotuns) whose arrival from Jötunheimr ended the golden age of the gods. Mania is the Roman Goddess of the Dead. Not to be confused with the Greek Goddess of Madness (also named Mania), she is called the mother of the Manes, the souls of the dead, who became her children when they descended to the Underworld. She was also later said to be the mother of the Lares, the household Gods. Mania rules over the Underworld along with Mantus, God of the Dead. Her image was hung over doors to frighten away evil spirits.

In Sioux mythology, Whope is the daugher of the Sun Wi (the all-knowing Dakota spirit of the sun) and the moon. She is a goddess of peace and the wife of the south wind. When Whope visited he earth, she gave the Dakota Indians a pipe as a symbol of peace. Later she became the White Buffalo Calf Woman to the Lakota Indians.

The Norns in Norse mythology are Goddesses who rule the destiny of Gods and men. The Norns spin the threads of fate at the foot of Yggdrasil, the tree of the world. Whereas the origin of the name norn is uncertain, it may derive from a word meaning "to twine" and which would refer to their twining the thread of fate.

Valkyrie In Norse mythology, is one of a host of female figures who decide which soldiers die in battle and which live. Selecting among half of those who die in battle (the other half go to the goddess Freyja's afterlife field Fólkvangr), the valkyries bring their chosen to the afterlife hall of the slain, Valhalla, ruled over by the god Odin. There, the deceased warriors become einherjar. When the einherjar are not preparing for the events of Ragnarök, the valkyries bear them mead.
