How to Make Hawaiian Ham and Swiss Sliders
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F
- Spray a 9×13-inch baking dish with cooking spray and set aside.
Step One: Slice Bread
- Using a large, serrated knife, split the King’s Hawaiian rolls in half so there is a top and bottom. Place the bottom of the rolls in the baking casserole dish.
- Layer the ham onto the bottom layer of the rolls.
- Add a single layer of Swiss cheese on top of the ham and then more Swiss and more ham. Layer as much as you like.
Step Two: Add Butter Glaze
- In a medium-sized mixing bowl, combine melted butter, Dijon mustard, Worcestershire sauce, dried onion, and poppy seeds.
- Place the top half of the rolls onto the ham sliders.
- Pour the buttery poppy seed sauce evenly over the top of the rolls. Use a pastry brush to spread the butter mixture over all the tops of the rolls. Sprinkle with a few more poppy seeds.
- Cover the pan with aluminum foil and bake for 10 minutes. Remove foil. Bake 7-10 more minutes until the tops of the sandwiches are golden brown and the slices of the Swiss cheese are melted.
Keep leftovers wrapped tightly with plastic wrap or in an airtight container up to 3-4 days in the fridge.
Tips for making Ham and Cheese Sliders with Brown Sugar
- Slicing the ham: When these sandwiches are warm the gooey Swiss cheese can make them slide around some when trying to cut them into individual sliders. So, you’ll want the slices of ham to be fairly thin so that they are easy to cut through. Shaved ham works really well.
- Assembling the sliders: If you are using Hawaiian sweet rolls that are pre-sliced, placing them back in the pan can be like a puzzle so just fit them best as you can. When cutting, use a sharp knife to cut along the lines of the tops of the rolls as the bottom half might not exactly match up. Using a package of rolls that aren’t pre-sliced makes it much easier to reassemble the bottom and the top of the buns.
- Line the pan with foil: If you are wanting to serve these easy ham sliders right out of the oven, the sandwiches will be too hot to handle. Line your casserole dish with foil and when they are done, you simply just lift the whole thing out by the foil, making them easier to handle.
- Prep in Advance: When planning a party or a get-together, you probably have several dishes you’re trying to prepare. To prep these little sandwiches in advance, you can layer the meat and cheese inside the slider rolls. Then place them in the casserole dish, in the fridge, until you’re ready to bake them. You’ll want to wait to add the sauce to the tops of the buns until right before baking. This will prevent you from having soggy and squishy Hawaiian rolls.
- Baking: If the top of the rolls begins to brown too much, just place the foil back over the top until they finish baking and the cheese melts.
Variations of Ham and Cheese Sliders on Hawaiian Rolls
Mustard: Brown sugar is balances out the flavors of the Dijon mustard in this recipe. You can also use plain yellow mustard instead. If you want to use honey mustard, you can, but to keep them from being too sweet I would recommend cutting the brown sugar down by half.
Cheeses: The classic recipe for these sandwiches calls for slices of Swiss cheese. But you can use any of your favorite melty cheeses. Mild cheddar, Munster and provolone cheese pairs really well with the flavor in the slices of the delicious ham. You could even use combination of your favorite slices of cheese.
Sauce: The sauce ingredients for the homemade poppyseed dressing used in this recipe makes classic ham and cheese sliders. But you can add other seasoning to the change up the flavor. Experiment with your favorites, like garlic powder and onion powder. Or you can add a little heat with a dash of cayenne or Cajun seasoning. You really can’t go wrong!
Breakfast sliders: If you have leftovers, the next morning add a fried egg to each of the individual sandwiches. They make an awesome grab and go breakfast.
Cuban style: Anytime I have leftover Instant Pulled Pork, I add to these sliders to make Cuban style sliders. All you have to is add a thin layer of pulled pork on top of the layers of ham. Add some dill pickles and you’ll have the BEST Cuban sliders.

Can You Freeze Hawaiian Ham and Cheese Sliders?
While you can freeze unbaked sliders, it’s best to do so before adding the sauce. Once you have thaw them, just add the sauce and baked a usual.
If you are wanting to freeze leftovers that have been baked, just wrap them in a couple layers of plastic wrap. Stick them in a freezer bag for up to a couple of months.
For best results when reheating them, allow them to thaw overnight in the fridge first. Then just put them in a preheated oven until they are heated through.

Hawaiian Roll Ham Sliders FAQs
As long as the sliders are served in a timely fashion, they won’t get soggy. Because of the sauce used on the sliders, they don’t save well and could get soggy.
Sliders can be served with so many sides. We love a side salad, green vegetable like green beans or brussel sprouts. You can also serve them with macaroni and cheese, baked beans, or cole slaw. Even a side of french fries or chips would be a great side item.
