The European Defence Agency (EDA) is the hub for #EUdefence cooperation | An Agency of the #EuropeanUnion.

About us

Created in 2004 to support and facilitate cross-border defence cooperation, EDA has become the place in Europe where countries willing to develop their defence capabilities collaboratively can do so. EDA’s expertise and activities cover the whole spectrum of cooperation: from harmonising requirements to delivering operational capabilities; from research & technology (R&T) and innovation to developing technology demonstrators; from training and exercises to support to CSDP operations. EDA also closely engages with the European defence industry to enhance Europe’s defence technological and industrial base and help make the industry stronger and more competitive. The Agency’s role and impact have constantly grown, especially with the implementation of the EU’s Global Strategy (2016) which also led Member States to reinforce the Agency’s mission in 2017. Managed by Chief Executive Jiří Šedivý under the authority of Josep Borrell, the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy.

The European Defence Agency (EDA) brought together representatives from 16 European Union Member States, the European Commission, the European External Action Service, the EU Military Staff, the European Space Agency - ESA and NATO for a two-day meeting at EDA's headquarters in Brussels. The meeting aimed at coordinating and streamlining efforts with the implementation of the Capability Development Plan and its space strategy for security and defence.     The Defence in Space forum was the sixth and largest gathering since its inception in 2022. It discussed the Space Priority Implementation Roadmaps stemming from the 2023 EU Capability Development Priorities, as well as the tasks assigned to EDA in implementing the #EUSpace strategy. EDA will contribute to identify critical space technologies, to provide military requirements for the EU Space Programme to the Commission, and in developing space education and training for #security and #defence.    Some EU Member States have strategies governing the way they work in space. For others an EU Space Strategy for Security and Defence might serve as an inspiration for stronger involvement in the domain.     Observation, navigation, communication EDA’s expertise plays a unique role as a bridge between space projects run by different initiatives, such as Permanent Structured Cooperation (#PESCO), the European Defence Fund (EDF) and the EU Space Programme.   At the September forum, space planners discussed space situational awareness, access, protection of space systems, space-based earth observation, positioning, navigation, and satellite communication.      The Defence in Space forum was launched within EDA in October 2022. It was an outcome of the EU’s defence review, #CARD, which identified defence in space as an area for collaboration.    #EUDefence #space #capability

📡🌍 On 11-12 September the European Defence Agency (EDA) held the 26th EU SatCom Market Joint Procurement Arrangement (JPA) Meeting Group at Telespazio’s Fucino Space Centre in Italy. The event was an excellent opportunity for representatives from EU Ministries of Defence, CSDP actors, and EU bodies to discuss the evolving role of satellite communications in strengthening European defence capabilities. It allowed participants to exchange views on the latest innovations in satellite communications (SatCom) technologies, emphasizing their strategic importance in future #EUDefence and space operations. In parallel, EDA hosted the 8th EU SatCom Market Event, where trusted industry partners showcased commercial cutting-edge #SatCom solutions to all EU SatCom market contributing members. From GEO, MEO, and LEO satellites to mobile communication solutions, the event testified the rapid technological progress driving Europe’s #space and #security sectors. At the core of these discussions was the need for reinforced collaboration to equip #EUDefence forces with resilient and reliable SatCom solutions. EDA is at the forefront in fostering this cooperation. With the ongoing support of our trusted partners, we continue to work toward a stronger, more connected #EUDefence network through collaborative procurement and innovative SatCom services. #cooperation #innovation #defence

IAPUNIT II - New EDA #research and #technology project on innovative auxiliary power unit based on fuel cell    On Friday 13 September 2024, EDA hosted the kick-off meeting of the project IAPUNIT II - Fuel cell system operating with standardized military Fuel, phase II. Building up on the results of the IAPUNIT I, this new project aims to produce a demonstrator of an 8-kW innovative auxiliary power unit for military purposes based on high-temperature PEM (Proton-Exchange Membrane) fuel cell. As a matter of fact, the electric load for the operation of the on-board systems of armoured vehicles keeps increasing. However, providing the required #energy from the main powertrain engine during stand still of the vehicle still presents some limitations, for instance, on efficiency, noise and infrared signature. Auxiliary power units, based on a dedicated internal combustion engine integrated aboard, can partially mitigate these issues, keeping using the same fuel for propulsion. Nevertheless, the acoustic and thermal issues remain unsolved.    IAPUNIT II aims at overcoming these limitations through the development of an auxiliary power unit based on a fuel cell, maintaining the advantage of using the same fuel as the drivetrain engine, avoiding space requirements for an additional tank as well as optimising logistics capacity for fuelling.    The project, prepared in the CapTech Ground Systems at EDA’s Research and Innovation Directorate and funded by Germany (Lead Nation), France, The Netherlands and Slovenia, contributes to the implementation of the NATO single fuel policy.  IAPUNIT II will be driven by a consortium composed of eleven industrial and research entities including the Fraunhofer ICT (project leader), AVL, the Technical University of Munich, the CEA, ENERCAT - ALSYS GROUP, KNDS N. V., Demcon, Procede Process Technology, the Jožef Stefan Institute, the Kemijski inštitut - National Institute of Chemistry and the University of Ljubljana.   #IAPUNIT #EDA #EUDefence #CapTech

🎉 Celebrating 10 years of the EU #CounterIED facility, the Joint Deployable Exploitation and Analysis Laboratory (JDEAL), this week in the Netherlands. #EUdefence cooperation in action, with 14 EU countries involved, made possible by the European Defence Agency and the Netherlands. #JDEAL, which built on EDA’s temporary lab deployed to Kabul in September 2011, comprises a permanent joint training facility in the Dutch town of Soesterberg, and two deployable laboratories equipped with tools such as a Rapid DNA machine. They can be deployed on five days’ notice, either as a container or a tent, depending on conditions in the field. Giuseppe Dello Stritto, EDA’s Head of Unit for Land and Logistics at the Agency’s Capability Directorate, said that JDEAL needed to stay one step ahead. “Counter-IED has evolved as a threat, and our military capabilities and postures need to evolve as well. So JDEAL may need to be adapted.” The Netherlands is now donating one of the deployable laboratories to Ukraine and will partly finance the cost of its replacement to maintain two laboratories at the service of Member States. https://lnkd.in/eS8W29Gk
