Europe is pursuing decarbonization while making itself increasingly dependent on imported energy. That is a contradiction policymakers can no longer ignore. A new report from Wood Mackenzie should be a wake-up call for European policymakers. According to its analysis, EU gas imports could exceed 98% of demand by 2050 if no new domestic field investments move forward. Today, the EU already imports about 85% of the gas it consumes, and LNG's share of supply could rise significantly as indigenous production declines and traditional supply sources weaken. The choice facing Europe is not between domestic production and imports. It is between responsibly produced domestic energy and growing reliance on external suppliers. A more supportive investment environment could increase EU production to 77 bcm by 2042, helping meet 38% of demand and displacing the equivalent of hundreds of LNG cargoes each year. Europe's long-term economic competitiveness, industrial resilience, and energy security will depend on maintaining access to affordable and reliable energy. Domestic production alone will not make the EU self-sufficient, but policies that discourage investment risk pushing the bloc toward ever-greater import dependence. Demand does not disappear because investment does. If Europe continues to consume natural gas while discouraging domestic production, it will increasingly rely on imported supply, exposing consumers and industry to higher costs, greater volatility, and deeper dependence on external markets. #EnergySecurity #Europe #NaturalGas #EnergyPolicy #Upstream #LNG #EnergyTransition #EUPolicy https://lnkd.in/eAUG9SSr
