Making an Outfit

There is probably no doubt how I feel about Fall and it's colors.  After all, I am an Autumn and my personality traits fit right into that category almost perfectly.

I read recently about a woman's struggle to adjust her wardrobe for this season change, so I thought I would show you some examples of my philosophy.

I believe that a clothing item should not be purchased unless you can make at least three outfits out of it.

This great Target find jacket allows me to pull together several outfits using my favorite fall colors.

This copper sweater was the basis for these three outfits.

1.  Brown leggings and boots with a gorgeous scarf and copper earrings
2.  Print leggings with a silver necklace and brown sandals
3.  Black print pants with a brown jewel necklace and boots

A simple scoop-neck black tee was the single factor in these outfits.

1.  Worn with black jeans and a long cardigan and statement necklace
2.  Dressed up with a purple velvet jacket and simple jewelry and black shoes
3.  Worn with khaki pants and a blue jean jacket and boots

Let me encourage you to shop in your closet and see how many different outfits you can put together with only a few different items.

I am using this mix & match wardrobe plan for our upcoming extended road trip.  It will save on packing space while also organizing my outfit options.

I am planning my travel wardrobe around three basic color of pants - black, khaki, and blue jeans.  I will carry a variety of tops and accessories to mix and match with these for various known and unknown occasions.

I think I foresee a blog post of this later.  In the meantime, blogging time will be at a premium, but be assured you will have picture overload of the wedding and travels to follow.

Hudson House Style - Fall #4 Cont'd

Hudson House Fashions
Remember the print pants from yesterday?

Here they are worn for much more casual occasions.

I added a pair of boots that are so cute with these pants.

I also am wearing a light-weight vest over a black tee.  This pretty vest pulls out the pinkish tones in the pants and makes for a fun, comfortable outfit.

In this outfit, I am pulling together the blue pants and booties from previous outfits and layering the vest over a beautiful print tunic.

Again, you have the layering that is good for fall, but also the lovely, less expected colors for fall.

This neat vest can be rolled up and stored in its own little carrying bag when not needed.  Such a neat idea.

Again, I'm wearing these pretty navy blue booties with the pretty gold details.

I love this pretty top and it is so comfortable.  Who doesn't like a tunic with pockets.

This top could be worn with so many other colors to make it a very versatile addition to any wardrobe.

Come back next week a for totally different look.

Hudson House Style - Fall #4

Hudson House Fashions

For some reason I did not get a picture wearing this grey sweater with this new pair of pants, but it would be perfect.  Not to mention making another outfit.

These are really lovely pants with a subtle coloration of greys and browns on black.

You will remember this top from last week's post.

This copper colored version of the grey sweater offers a different look.  Notice the angular hem and deep slit on the side.  The grey leather multi-strand necklace pulls in the grey from the pants.

Come back tomorrow to see a much more casual way to wear these pants.

Hudson House Style - Fall #3 Cont'd

Hudson House Fashions
Yesterday I introduced these great knit pants with a grey top.  You can find it HERE!

I also promised to show them with other options.

I added this lovely gold satiny blouse.  It changes up the look from the grey and demonstrates the versatility of the pants.

I also added a pair of brown wedges that have been in my closet for years.

This chiffon lined blouse is so basic and can be worn with everything I will be showing you in this series.  It would make a perfect outfit for parties on the porch or in a nice restaurant.

For those days or evenings when another layer is called for, this black jacket is perfect.  The grey detail is perfect with the pants.  You will remember it from the first post HERE.

I even got my friend and hostess, Sarah to model it with her jeans and cute shirt.  It is such a versatile jacket and she looks snazzy.

Great details.

Finally, look how cute these pants are with this lovely grey tunic sweater.  Also, notice the lovely detail on the sleeves.  You will see this again.

Next Monday, I'll show you the third pair of pants and again how to mix and match.

Hudson House Style - Fall #3

Hudson House Fashions

My #1 wardrobe planning advice is to never buy anything that cannot be worn at least three different ways.

#2 is to always dress for success!

This does not always mean a power suit, thankfully.

What it does mean is to dress yourself appropriately in all situations.

Consider your audience - your location - your goal

My audience, location and goal these days are very simple and somewhat limited since being retired.  I don't see a lot of people during the day as a rule except for two or three weekly activities.

My goal is usually to be dressed appropriately for my daily trek to the gym, an occasional trip to the store, a night out and church activities, with a special event thrown in.

With the following posts, I want to offer some practical suggestions for
mixing and matching for FALL.  This might mean daily outings or a trip to see the fall leaves, or a night at the symphony.  Or just being comfortably attired while at home.  And I will base all the outfits on print, knit pants from Hudson's and a few inter-changeable tops.

Also, how do we dress for success when the seasons are changing and we go from 36 degrees to 80 in one day?  Or in our case this week, from 62 to 29?

In post #1 I showed these bright colored pants.

Every top that I will be showing in the following posts can be worn with them as well.  And, remember I promised to show you this great black jacket in other ways too.

So, let's get started.

I love these wide-legged pants.  They are the most comfortable things you can put on.  In fact, Jan, at Hudson's says she actually sleeps in these knit pants because they feel amazing.

As you can see, I am wearing a black shell under this beautiful grey satiny blouse worn as an open jacket.  Wearing layers is the secret for this time of year.  It is such a great look.

Remember, you want to make your items versatile, so if your temps are still hot, just wear a neutral top without the jacket.  Or button up the blouse and wear it by itself.  And if really cool, add a jacket over the blouse.

Look at the gorgeous detail of the back of this top.  You will be seeing it again.

Because the weather was absolutely gorgeous this afternoon, I pulled out my favorite yellow sandals to brighten up the outfit.  It didn't hurt that my friend had recently planted yellow pansies for the fall.

Tomorrow, I will show you some other ideas to change up these great pants.

Would you wear these print pants?

What is in your closet that you could wear with them?

Inspiration to Myself

With no Wednesday Hodgepodge today, I thought I would throw together a quick post on my own.

Disclaimer:

This is a selfish post because I am the one who needs inspiration for putting together outfits right now.  I have become very lackadaisical with my wardrobe of late.  I love seeing other women's ideas and combinations and thought why not post a few of mine from times past and I might add a few I like from others as well.

I hope you may get some ideas that will spur you to shop in your own closet as I need to do.
This is a fun outfit and is so comfortable.

This is just one look from a capsule I put together a couple years ago for a trip.  The brown-on-brown is so practical and can be altered in so many ways.

You can never go wrong with black and white stripes.  Change to a pair of white jeans or crops but since the top doesn't cover the derriere, forget the leggings.
For a dresser look, I love my gray suit.  The look is timeless and the ways to alter the look are unlimited.

This is just a classic look with white jeans and a simple tee.  Throw on a light weight jacket or cardigan and you're ready to go.  Don't forget a statement necklace with this simple look.

My Stella top is one of my favorites.  It will go with any color jean or dress up slacks.  The hat was just for fun.

And this is my look today.  It is fun and will go just about anywhere, which is why I love it.

Now for some inspiration from some of my favorite bloggers on fashion for women my age.  No doubt they are a lot younger than I am, as are most people, but they have such an ageless style.

I absolutely love this lady's sense of style.  Beth is one snazzy dresser but relate-able.  I think I can safely say I enjoy her blog the most simply because I would love to be able to wear everything she puts on.
Style At A Certain Age

Jennifer is perhaps closer to my age, but don't tell her I said that.  She is a very stylish and classic dresser.  I follow her on her blog as well as Instagram.
Chic at Any Age

I learned about Diana about fifteen years ago when she wrote one of her first e-books, "Wardrobe Magic".  She was my guru on wardrobe planning as I bought almost every e-book she put out.  I used her materials in my seminars which was an invaluable resource.  She is the most knowledgeable fashion consultant out there, as far as I'm concerned.

Fashion For Real Women

I follow Jennifer by email as well as following her blog.  She is a petite cutie who gives very down-to-earth fashion advice.
A Well Styled Life

I hope this gives you some good ideas and resources as you plan your spring/summer wardrobe.

Options for a Basic Suit

It 's Sunday afternoon.  We've been to Sunday School and had a great time exploring the story of Zacchaeus from Dr. Luke's account with some of the sweetest and most insightful friends.  But, it's not really the story of Zacchaeus, the wee little man who climbed a tree to see Jesus.  It's really the story of God's Divine appointed intervention in a person's life.  It's about God reaching out and touching and spending time with a person who recognizes he is totally insufficient within himself.  It's about the change God desires to make and will make within everyone of us when we are willing to climb the tree that may embarrass us just so we can see the Holy One.

I pray this Sunday afternoon that you and I will experience the Holy One this week as go about our busy or not so busy routines.  We may have a divine appointment ahead!

I thought I would show you what I wore to church this morning and then some possible options.
I bought this Le Suit outfit several years ago while still working and it remains one of my favorites, even though I have lost some weight since buying it.
You will notice it has a gold thread running through the weave which gives it an interesting sheen.

This morning I chose to wear a sweater that complimented the texture of the suit.
I have used so many different looks with this beautiful suit which dresses it up or down depending on the occasion.

Options
For instance, purple makes a nice contrast with the gold threads.
I especially like wearing this lovely Mother-of-Pearl necklace which is simple and not over-powering.  I also have a multi-strand purple beaded choker which is interesting and a bit more formal.

With a white sweater or blouse, this metal necklace adds a visual weight and balances the dark suit.

For a more casual look, I like the strip combined with this simple, interesting necklace.  The large transparent stone creates interest while allowing the strips to show.

How about adding a simple colorful tee to an otherwise dressy suit.  I love this Black Market/White House knit tee and the chunky complimentary necklace.  The contrast pleases me.

The long multi-strand chain is an option with an open jacket.

And this is my all-time favorite necklace which I wear with just about everything.  You can't go wrong with this beauty!

I have a friend who's trademark is a scarf.  She may wear a small square one knotted around her neck, or a long rectangle under a lapel.  She may even drape a large square over a shoulder with a broach pin or use one as a beautiful shawl.  There are so many options.
These are just a few I found in my selection that would be great with this particular suit.

I hope I have given you food for thought for taking advantage of the basics in your closet.  You just don't need so many clothes when you have mix and match options.
