Weekend Away 06:05
(Chorus) The stars come out for dreamers and you’ve got to hear the call. It’s a melody reminding you that Earth is much too small With a cold and crystal vision of a universe that’s wide. And if I had a starship, I would take you for a ride On a weekend journey to the other side. You’ve got to find a place that’s dark to see the stars by night. The city lights are much too bright and always win the fight. I remember when we stood once high beside a mountain road Where the air was cold and clear and thin and the Milky Way just glowed. And the stars came out to greet us shining like a million jewels, Twinkling there like diamonds in the sky. And I would steal that sky for you, be breaking all the rules, But we’re gonna have to find a way to fly. Let’s climb aboard our starship, ‘cause you’ve got to take a chance. You’ve got to leave the Earth behind to see the stars go dance. The galaxy keeps turning and the spiral’s deep and wide. Let’s turn our face to outer space and set out for a ride. And the stars are so much brighter when you make a warp drive run, Looking forward toward a world of blue. And as we look behind us to see our fading sun, I’m glad that I could take this trip with you. We’re flying to the future when we pass the speed of light, ‘Cause the light that we are seeing will not reach the Earth tonight. Sirius is not much changed and Rigel’s still aglow, But Betelgeuse is cutting loose – that thing is gonna blow! There’s only so much time before we have to turn around. Only so much time when we can roam. But we can dream a dream about a course that’s outward bound And dream another course that leads us home. (Chorus) On a weekend journey to the other side.

Counting Up 04:33
One, you are the fuel that makes my rocket engines burn. Two, you are the reason that my orbit will return. Three, you’ve got a pull with which I cannot disagree. You are the best thing that is happening to me. (Chorus) One, two, three, Pull me close, it’s time to kiss me. One, two, three, When I’m gone, you know you’ll miss me. Three, two, one, I’m blasting off for another run, But I’ll be back and then It’s time for counting up again. One, I want to have a little quiet conversation. Two, and where it leads is up to your imagination. Three, you are most everything that I have hoped to find. You are the one who’s gonna make me lose my mind. One, you are the only one I cannot wait to see. Two, you are the person that I needed you to be. Three, you are the one who’s got me making a new plan. You are the one who gets my rocket ship to land. (Bridge) One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten. You make me want to go and then come back again. One, you are the sweetest thing I’ve found on planet-side. Two, you are the only one who leaves me satisfied. Three, I want to bind it all together with a ring. You are the only one who makes me want to sing. (Chorus twice) One, two, three.
3.
(Chorus) I'm chasing after starlight, I'm diving through the black. I've learned to love the space between, but it never loves me back. So I'm waiting for the time when I'll feel fine At the end of the line. I've gone halfway to anywhere. I'm hanging in the void, Renewing an old love affair That's keeping me employed. And home should be before me And distant stars behind. The equations all ignore me With solutions undefined. We're lost between dimensions On a jump gone wild and free. Got to hold us in suspension Till computer finds the key, For I am more than pilot – I am fuel to feed the drive. Through a sky gone ultraviolet, I must get us home alive. (Bridge) The pain is like my oldest friend I did not want to see. Will the program reach its end Before sleep sets me free? To fall with no solution Means the ship is surely lost. There's no hope for substitution – I'm the one to pay the cost. The computer's whining madly. The solution's gone to hide. "It's all right," she told me sadly And I know the damned thing lied. I'm the pilot of this starship In a universe of pain. As long as I can keep my grip, It's here we will remain. (Chorus twice) At the end of the line. At the end of the line.

Canvas 03:39
The problem is real, the solution is not, And I can’t solve it now with the tools that I’ve got. The canvas before me is blank as can be And filled with a picture that only I see. (Chorus) I’m painting a picture with if, else, and then. Filling in colors, beginning to end. And when I have drawn all the paths I can find, Will the image reflect what I see in my mind? Rough in the circle to hold and to bind The dancers with answers who waltz in my mind. Committed to canvas to hold them in place, Now fill in the holes in the negative space. (Bridge) Painting the canvas by touch and by feel. Creating solutions and making them real. And you’re watching me work and you swear that I’m blind, ‘Cause you think that the answers are easy to find. My painting is done now or so I believe. I study the lines where the paths interleave. The dancers all frozen in time where they stand To produce the solution upon my command. (Chorus and alternate chorus) I’ve painted a picture with if, else, and then. Filled in the colors, beginning to end. I’ve drawn all the paths and I know where they lead And I pray at the end is the answer I need. And I pray at the end is the answer I need.

Coal 04:17
My grandpa was a farmer, but you couldn’t make a living that way, But they needed men at the coal mine, so that’s where he spent his day. He worked at the face with the big machine as it tore into the seam And as it ripped the coal away, you could hear the big drum scream. And it chewed it up and it spit it out And the air was thick with coal. And they worked long days to earn their pay At the bottom of a deep dark hole. At the bottom of a deep dark hole. The big drum kept on turning ‘till it tossed a rock up high. The course it flew was straight and true and it took my grandpa’s eye. The company was through with him, but the union made them pay. The pension let him read and farm and the one-eyed man’s ok. But they chewed him up and they spit him out, ‘Cause the company’s got no soul. But the contracts say that they’ve got to pay And he left behind the coal. And he left behind the coal. My dad spent summers in the mine, ‘cause school’s worth paying for. Got his degree, but then, you see, his country was at war. Spent twenty years in service, too short for a man’s career, But up or out, the rule’s about, and that’s why he’s back here. They chewed him up and they spit him out, But he’s got a father’s role. Retirement pay won’t let him stay So he went back to the coal. So he went back to the coal. They said, “Son, you’re an engineer – here’s an office with a door.” And with his team, the big machines work better than before. The company made millions from the patents that they’d earned. They told him, “Son, your work is done, so now you’re getting burned.” They chewed him up and they spit him out For their hearts were black as coal. He was reassigned from mine to mine At the bottom of a deep dark hole. At the bottom of a deep dark hole. I’ve never been a miner, but coal runs down my line. And down in southern Illinois, they’re closing down the mines. We do not want their dirty coal brought up by dirty men. And all they want’s an honest job to feed their kin again. But we chewed them up and we spit them out And we left them on the dole. It’s a brand new day – they should go away At the bottom of a deep dark hole. At the bottom of a deep dark hole. If folks had their way, they would go away At the bottom of a six-foot hole. At the bottom of a six-foot hole.
6.
(Chorus) If you can do it, I can undo it. I’m on your trail. If you can change it, I’ll rearrange it. You’re bound to fail Time after time. I’ve got a job to do, I do it well. You race from time to time, out raising hell. Every ripple that you make, I need to cancel out To keep the future safe when all you vandals are about. Time after time. Some of you are crazy, and some of you are blind. And if you want your grandpa dead, I really wouldn’t mind. But each new instability leads closer to the end And so I’ll save his life from you, again, and again, and again. Time after time. (Bridge) And some of you will tell me that you seek a greater good, That baby Hitler ought to die the way that Hitlers should. But in that mutant future, there’ll be no one left to mourn A half a trillion people who will never have been born. Time after time. No changes are permitted anywhere along the line. From Big Bang to Eternity, humanity is fine. As time maintained immutable is time that mankind rules, And so I keep the time stream safe from madmen, cranks, and fools. Time after time. (Chorus twice) Time after time. Time after time.
7.
(Chorus) Send me pictures of the planets. Send me postcards from the stars. Shots of rocks and rills and granites From a robot ship on Mars. I want to know most everything About places I can’t be. I can’t touch the stars for anything, But my eyes can always see. I’m a prisoner of gravity, I’m a captive of my age. There are places that I long to be If I could escape this cage. But robot ships and telescopes Can go where I can’t fly, Send photos fanning fading hopes Spread out before my eyes. Mariner and Pioneer Sent shots to tantalize. Voyager on its grand tour Would let me fantasize. A telescope that couldn’t see With a mirror that was flawed Got corrective lenses just like me And Hubble left us awed. (Bridge) We’re sending robots out to roam Round planets that are far from home, Sending pictures back to me Of places I can never be. And the stars are shining bright As I stare into the dark of night. I’m a prisoner of gravity With an eye turned out toward space And pictures coming home to me From almost every place. The light from the first galaxies And the grooves in Saturn’s rings. Images to set me free On imaginary wings. Send me pictures of the planets. Send me postcards from the stars.
8.
(Chorus) Last ship outbound, setting out to flee from the fire in the sky. Last ship outbound, you’ve got to be aboard her when she’s ready to fly. I would not see you stay here, ‘cause I will not see you die. You’re the lucky winner of a one-way ticket to ride On the last ship outbound. You could have been an engineer or a politician’s son. You could have had a skill they thought they’d need beneath a foreign sun, But you’re the reason that they saved one seat in every ten So we’d have the hope we’d be aboard her on the last day when (We saw the) We knew we never had a chance, but we signed up anyway. Too few seats, too many folks, and not a chance to fly away. Until they drew your name, one chance to race the fire. We promised that we’d be on board and I won’t let you be a liar. (Be on that) (Bridge) We knew there was no chance that both of us would fly. Now you’re the one to live and I’m the one to die. And though we might have chosen that we both would stay, You’re the lucky winner and you’re gonna fly away (Upon the) I will not see you stay here and throw your life away. You’re gonna board that ship and live to see another day. And when the nova’s light leaves nothing here behind, I’ll be the memory that’s kept inside a single person’s mind (Upon the) Remember me.
9.
I want to ride a rocket blasting off to outer space And float in zero gravity in that high and lonely place. But it isn’t really lonely, ‘cause one thing I know is true: Wherever I am going, I am going there with you. I want to walk within the pages of my favorite book And help the heroes win the day, no matter what it took. And with you there beside me, we would know just what to do, ‘Cause wherever I am going, I am going there with you. (Bridge to instrumental verse) No matter where I’m going and no matter where I roam, Any place that I’m with you is a place that I call home. Let’s pack our bags together and set off for somewhere new. The only thing I care about is going there with you. I want to take a time machine back to the day we met And remember what it felt like when I hadn’t found you yet. And I would tell that younger man that wishes do come true, ‘Cause wherever I am going, I am going there with you. I want to ride a rocket blasting off to outer space And float in zero gravity in that high and lonely place. But it isn’t really lonely, ‘cause one thing I know is true: Wherever I am going, I am going there with you. Yeah, wherever I am going, I am going there with you. Wherever I am going, I am going there with you.

Wise Guys 07:36
I’ve been a star pilot for a longer time than most. I know when to push the throttle in and when it’s time to coast. Some folks say I’m cautious and some say I’m just old, But when I was a younger guy I used to be quite bold. Push the throttle past the red line, force the engines to exceed, Disregarding safety margins ‘cause I felt the need for speed. They said that flying starships is a game for younger men. That’s the story that they told me; I believed it all back then. (Chorus) I want to be old. I want to be wise. I want to be just a little bit smarter than all those younger guys. They say old age and treachery are the secret to success, But I’d rather play it honestly, ‘cause the wise guy says that’s best. Had a hot load for Arcadia, they wanted it there fast, But the guy they gave my second seat was some relic from the past. I told him he could take a nap for the balance of the trip. I didn’t need some wise guy helping me to fly my ship. We were ten percent past red line, he was givin’ me a look. He said, “You push the margins and that engine’s gonna cook.” But that’s why I’m the pilot and he’s the second seat. You know it takes a bold, young man to know just how to cheat. We were about six hours from landing, it was time to turn around, When the wise guy cleared his throat and said, “I do not like that sound.” I laughed and said, “There’s nothing wrong, so just relax, old man.” Put my hand upon the throttle and that’s when it hit the fan. That wise guy must have laid a curse ‘cause that engine coughed and died And left us on a course aimed to arrive on planetside, About three hours too early and unhappily too fast. You hope for a soft landing, but this one would be a blast. I stared down at the panel with a blank look on my face. The wise guy said, “Now, Captain, I’m too old to die in space. If you don’t mind, I’d like to see if I could take us in.” I stammered yes, he looked at me, and cracked an evil grin. “This engine’s gonna need to be rebuilt when we touch down. It isn’t meant to be abused by some young, cocky clown.” He flushed the coolant out to space and flooded it with more And after two more cycles, our engine started with a roar. “We’ve got to shed some delta-V before it’s safe to land. This course correction’s gonna make us later than you planned. We’ll take a loop around that moon for a gravity assist. Arcadia Port has got the plan – would you like to check my list?” He leaned back from the console and he looked me in the eye. “Just keep it under eighty and this bird’s still fit to fly.” Well, I’d been bold, but the wise guy’s old and smarter than I knew, And since that day, I’ve learned to be a wiser pilot too. (Chorus twice) Yeah, I’d rather play it honestly, ‘cause the wise guy says that’s best.

I’m counting down the time Under starlight showers. Listen for the chime Marking off the hours. I’ve been off to roam With the time I borrowed. Now I’m coming home. I’ll be there ‘fore tomorrow. (Chorus) And the stars shine on. And they shine for you and me. Before this night is done, I’ll be home with you and you’ll be home with me. All the pretty lights Hanging up in heaven. Just so many nights In the time that we are given. Time we spent apart, Time we spent together. I’m reaching for your heart Through all this starry weather. The stars come out to dance As I fly through distant spaces To the memory of romance And long-delayed embraces. I am homeward bound, Just the stars and I together, Coming back around From the far side of forever. (Chorus twice) You’ll be home with me. You’ll be home with me. You’ll be home with me.
12.
(Chorus) I'm running down the stars. I'm riding on the foam. Distance is the bars That are keeping me from home. I've been away too long And I don't know what to do, But I know it can't be wrong If it brings me home to you. I'm pushing past the speed of light. I'm breaking all the laws And when I push that throttle right, I've got effect before the cause. My life is quite improbable. It had to be with you. Equations might be solvable And if they are, I'm coming through. I'm cruising on the energy Drawn from the quantum field, Abusing every synergy To break the laws and crank the yield. Divide the sum by zero And fly without a net. I don't need to be a hero, Just a gambler who can win a bet. (Bridge) In the constants of creation, there are answers to be found. If no one hears me vanish, would I go without a sound? If the clock upon the ship should say that I am running late Would I say that I am here or there or indeterminably state I'm looking for solutions To equations quite complex, But I've got no resolutions Where imaginaries twist and vex. They might tell you that I'm lost. I know that it's not true. I only need to pay the cost To find the root that leads to you. (Chorus twice) Yes, I know it can't be wrong If it brings me home to you.

Lunatic Moon 05:34
(Chorus) You hear it as it's crossing the horizon And you know that you cannot escape the tune. Feel the line of tension that is rising And you know that there are madmen coming soon With the lunatic moon. There's music in the moonlight as it rises overhead And the melody you're hearing means someone's already dead. It's a symphony of sorrow and of polyphonic pain Saying life is for the losers and there's nothing left to gain, But you have to keep on running and you have to shut it out If you want to keep on living when the madmen are about. You look at the horizon where the full moon's rising red And you wish that you were wise enough to be at home in bed. It's a tremolo of terror, it's a funerale of fear And you wish that you were crying, but you cannot find a tear. And you know that there are madmen for you hear them start to wail. And you have to keep on running cause the madmen never fail. (Bridge) You cannot let them catch you, for the song has made them mad. The moon has stripped away the inhibitions that they had And set the madmen free as they're released from their cocoon. There's madness in the music and you pray that you're immune To the lunatic moon. (Final chorus) With the lunatic moon. It's a lunatic moon.
14.
If the moon was made for love, Pale fire shining down from above, What's gonna be left when it goes away? And, when a love is new, We know just what to do, But when that love grows old, what will we say? (Chorus) So swear not by the moon, That damned inconstant moon, For she's a fickle lady and I'll be in darkness soon. No, swear to me by time That you always will be mine ‘Till the space between the moments slips away. And with a lover's sight In our reflected light, We see a perfect love without a mark, But if the light should wane, Our love might bring new pain For getting lost is easy in the dark. You might say it's just a phase, But love moves in mysterious ways And I'd like to see what happens when the cycle turns. So put aside your doubt. Trim the wick so love won't blow out And we'll watch for the new moon as our candle burns. (Chorus twice) ‘Till the space between the moments slips away.
15.
In winter-white forest they're dancing again. They float and they leap in the arms of the wind And in her cold breath see them starting to spin. In bitter-cold winter watch magic begin. The icicles ring with a crystalline tone And a music that you've never known. Deep in the forest, the ice fairies dance all alone. All alone. The sunlight in winter is bitter and cold And the snow on the ground has the chance to grow old And give birth to fairies who dance in the air. Look sharp in the forest, you'll see they are there. They dance and they twirl round the trunks of the trees. They stay deep in hiding so nobody sees That fairies still dance in a world that mankind calls its own. All alone. They dance through the winter on ice-crystal wings, Their magic preserving the promise of spring. All alone. Walk soft through the forest some cold winter day And be very still – you'll catch fairies at play. They dance to the music of crystalline sound As the sunlight reflects off the snow-covered ground. They'll dance through the winter until the spring thaw, But though they are gone, you'll still know what you saw. That magic survives, it's alive, and it thrives on its own. All alone. All alone. All alone.
16.
(Chorus) Make a joyful noise, find your song. Count out the measures, short or long Follow notes along the staff, Eighth and quarter, whole and half. Hold up your head and laugh And make a joyful noise Music paints pictures in watercolor hues: A river's course, a city's pulse, a dancer's crimson shoes. Fairy castle images, translucent in the air Close your eyes and see it as the music takes you there. Music without words has its story to embrace: Enchanted brooms, a pesky wolf, a satellite in space. Melodies that rise and fall, a tale that's taking wing! And when the music comes to rest we'll know just why we sing. Music is a language everyone can share. One soul can touch another if we only choose to dare. Let’s make a song together with hand and heart and voice And raise the chorus higher as we make a joyful noise. (Final chorus and repeat last two lines) Hold up your head and laugh And make a joyful noise.

Halloween 04:39
There are creatures searching for you, Ghosts and goblins waiting at the door, But what for? You know they can’t ignore you. You’re their favorite kind of tasty treat. Good to eat. They’re pounding at the doorway, but it will not let them through. They’ve got to find another path to lead them here to you. (Chorus) The darkness will surround you as the walls are growing thin. And you see the moon is rising, but it’s rising with a grin. In the corners of your vision, you see things from in between. They’re coming now to take you on the night – of Halloween. Walls are there for reasons, Separating things we cannot face From our race. At the turning of the seasons, Summer yields reluctantly to fall. Watch the wall! The boundaries between the worlds are stretched so very tight And things that we should never see are coming here tonight. (Bridge) They want to feel your terror when your world’s not what it seems. They want to see you running and they want to hear your screams. There’s safety yet in numbers. Throw another log upon the fire, Burning higher. No night for peaceful slumbers. Together we can wield the power of light Against the night. So raise your torches higher and we’ll blind the creatures’ eyes. Don’t dare to leave the circle of the light that they despise. Of Halloween. Of Halloween.
18.
I know I must be dreaming That I’m lying safe in bed, But I hear a distant screaming That’s an echo in my head. The voice is so familiar As I strain to recognize And I know this storm’s a killer As the wind begins to rise. (Chorus) I thought I heard you calling And I thought I heard your voice. It said that you were falling And you didn’t have a choice. Underneath electric skies, I’m listening to hear your cries And the wind is shrieking, telling lies, And it’s a long, long way until the morning, And it’s a long, long time until the day. I know what I am hearing, That you’re lost and can’t be found And your voice is disappearing As I’m trapped here on the ground. Somewhere you are falling free, A prisoner of the sky. Somewhere you are calling me And I need to learn to fly. (Bridge) I stand upon the precipice And I’ve got to take the dive. I’ve got to fly, ‘cause if I miss, We won’t leave here alive. In the lightning and the thunder, I am left to look within With one last chance to wonder If I have a chance to win. For a moment, I am falling, But I’m learning how to steer. Far off, your voice is calling And it’s all that I can hear. I see you and I catch you And I hold you in my arms. The wind still tries to snatch you, But tonight you’re safe from harm. (Bridge) And I do not question why we’re here In the middle of the night, Or why my arms should draw you near, Or why I dream of flight. And as the rain is streaming In my eyes to make me blind, I wonder what you’re dreaming On the far side of your mind. (Chorus twice) And it’s a long, long way until the morning, And it’s a long, long time until the day.

Oz 05:17
I want to look into your eyes And promise I won’t tell you lies Like every other humbug wizard passing through the fair. And hope that you might take a chance On understated elegance, A conveyance of my own design to take us anywhere. Come fly with me through space and time. I’ll conjure up a bit of rhyme And maybe summon up a tune To sing as we sail past the moon. As we’re sitting sharing dreams, Reality’s not what it seems. My balloon can carry two. Come fly with me so I can fly with you. Beneath the canopy unfurled, We’ll drift between the different worlds Where nothing is impossible that hasn’t happened yet. And hope that it is not amiss If I lean over for a kiss That I’ve held in abeyance since the moment that we met. Come fly with me through time and space. I’ll conjure up some better place And summon up your heart’s desire As we sail safe past lakes of fire. From here to there and back again, We’re sailing off to anywhen. My balloon can carry two. Come fly with me so I can fly with you. (Bridge) I’m not like any other wizard that you might have seen, For I have learned my lessons in a land of emerald green. And though I once was humbug, I am better than I was And I have learned to do the things an honest wizard does. I hope that you might venture soon To take a ride in my balloon. I’ll cast away the moorings and we’ll sail into the sky. And I will promise this to you: My wizard’s word is finally true, ‘Cause even an old humbug can someday learn to fly. Come fly with me to anywhere. I’ll conjure anything you dare And summon up some worthy cause For us to journey back to Oz, Where reality’s another scene All colored up in emerald green. My balloon can carry two. Come fly with me so I can fly with you. Come fly with me so I can fly with you.
20.
(Chorus) Somewhere I'm a pirate and somewhere I'm a king. Here and now I'm happy just to have the chance to sing, For that king might be a tyrant and that pirate lost at sea, But in the world I'm living in, I'm glad you're here with me. They say that universes lie like numbers on a line So I'm counting to infinity, one number at a time, And if I had a ship to sail upon the quantum tide, Would I find another world where you are standing by my side? How large is the infinity that holds another you? And how much further must I count for it to hold me too? "Improbable, yet possible," proclaims the voice of Chance And he calls the steps as worlds pass by caught in the cosmic dance. (Bridge) I'm counting to infinity, but I do not know the size And they claim all things are possible and I swear they're telling lies. The worlds we might imagine are not worlds that must be true And I would not be the me lost in a world that's missing you. I've counted to infinity once, twice, and thrice again And I've found you and I've found me on worlds beyond our ken, But never both together though infinity is wide, So I'm counting back to zero where I'll find you by my side.
21.
It’s making me crazy, Working at my job all day and into the night. And it’s making you crazy, Looking after kids and breaking up another fight. It’s not easy, but I know we’re gonna find a way To get to tomorrow Past the trouble that we borrow, ‘Cause every day’s a better day. And I’ll live Happily ever after, as long as I am living with you. It took such a long time, but we’re better for the things we’ve been through. And we’ll get through tomorrow, the way that we will get through today And live happily ever after, now that we’re together to stay. It’s so hard to breathe now, ‘Cause everything is running and it always keeps on moving too fast. You’ve got to believe now, ‘Cause the future’s always coming and the future’s always beating the past. I remember, and I’m not here to relive yesterday. I’ll be with you tomorrow. I can beat down any sorrow, ‘Cause I only want to hear you say That we’ll live (Bridge) Well, I know I make you crazy And you know you make me crazy And that’s just the way that life should be, ‘Cause you’ve got to be a little crazy If you want to keep your sanity. And my only explanation When we fail communication And one of us is getting sore Is to go resist temptation And head for the summation, ‘Cause every day I love you more. And we’ll live (Chorus twice) We’ll live happily ever after, now that we’re together to stay.
22.
We’ve been down so many roads With friends to lighten up our loads. We’ve been so many places And we’ve seen so many things. Sunrise, sunset, nights between, Friendships that were evergreen, Kicking up the traces Where everybody sings. (Chorus) Everything ends someday. Everything ends and that’s ok. Playing all the games that we wanted to play And we had fun along the way. Even though we might want to stay, We know we’re gonna be ok, ‘Cause everything ends – someday. Counting days and counting years, Counting joys and counting fears. Memories stacked higher Than the mountains we recall. I know you and you know me In ways that no one else can see. Toss a log upon the fire And watch sparks fly and fall. (Bridge) The more time flies, the more things change, The more we have to rearrange. You know that wisdom comes with age. It’s time to turn another page. And so it’s time when one thing ends, A place we met so many friends, Made memories together With laughter and with tears, And a melody we still recall, Laughing, skipping down the hall. A pleasant sort of tether To bind us cross the years. (Chorus twice) Everything ends – someday. Yeah, everything ends – someday.

Shining 05:28
(Chorus) Shooting stars are pretty as they streak across the sky And their light’s there for a moment, then their light has passed us by. They’re not the light I like to see, they’re not the light I hope to be. I want to go on shining and I hope you will agree That we ought to shine together for a long, long time. My world is so much better when it’s all filled up with light. Light to show the pathway in the middle of the night, Light that never fails me, light that’s glowing strong, Light to give me hope when all the world is going wrong. I look up to the heavens to a sky that’s filled with stars. The light that’s generations old is now the light that’s ours. The light that guided ships at sea wherever they may roam, Light that’s like the light I see that’s going to lead me home. The points of light that guide us from the stars so far away Are suns much like our own that brings us new life every day. Life and light forever shine in the expanse. We can shine together as we spin through time’s long dance. (Chorus twice) We ought to shine together for a long, long time. We ought to shine together for a long, for the longest time.

about

I have always wanted to be in a band.

This is not uncommon for folks of my generation who sang and played an instrument. Unfortunately, I am a male rhythm guitarist who can’t manage to sing harmony and you simply don’t see a lot of people posting “rhythm guitarist wanted”, because we are about as common as dirt. Banjo players are probably in more demand.

So I’m not in a band, other than a few occasions with the Thieving Magpies, where I hooked up with a Wild Mercy fragment lacking a Barry & Sally. And it was fun!

And I’m in a duo with my wife, Gretchen, who I love singing with, but we aren’t a band. We are “Bill and Gretchen” and that’s fine. And usually funny. And fun!

And then there’s Amy. I am so happy that this incredibly talented and hard-working fiddler wants to join me on stage when I’m playing, because it is so much fun. She’s a wonderful person too, which is a big, big bonus. And she has worked at fiddling for so long and so hard that she can play along on my songs that she has never heard before hitting the stage for a concert, which amazes me no end. This includes hitting the hard stop on songs where she doesn’t know that there’s a hard stop.

What you’re hearing here are four live concerts where I was able to get multi-track recordings to mix down – except that I have replaced some of the vocals because there were really good reasons for replacing those particular vocals. You can try to figure out which ones.

I hope that you have at least half as much fun listening to this as we did playing together.

But we’re not a band. We’re just Amy & Me.

Having fun.

(An additional note for those of you discovering this on line: in physical form this is a two CD set, 58 minutes for tracks 1-12; 51 minutes for tracks 13-23. So this is a *lot* of music.)
