A lot of financial decisions are based on one question; CAN I AFFORD TO BUY IT? but I think another question is just as important; CAN I AFFORD TO KEEP IT?
Seeing your post reminded me of a proverb. That is it is harder to maintain freedom than to gain it. And this also applies to our real life. For example, getting married is easy but taking on the responsibility of supporting a family after marriage is difficult. So I would say, we should decide in advance what we will achieve and whether we will be able to maintain that thing. This way we don't have to get into trouble later.

Do you think people pay enough attention to the cost of maintaining what they buy or do we focus too much on the initial price?
Most people do not pay enough attention to the cost of maintaining what they buy, most of them focus on the buy price of the item. The reason behind this is that most people buy stuff not of necessity but of bragging rights. They force themselves to buy things just to boost their ego. They wanted their community to be in awe, thinking that they are now capable people, but in reality, they are just scraping by and can barely have funds to maintain the stuff.

Not everyone are into that thinking of what's next after having those material things, the maintenance is mostly ignored.
For the long term thinkers, we're thinking of how useful a thing is and how it should be maintained. And that's part of our thinking so that the usage and the worth of that thing will be prolonged.
So if we buy things, not only with the maintenance but also look after ourselves on how we're going to take care of it.

I don't think people pay attention to the maintenance part at least not as much as they should, like right now is October and someone is probably planning for December, to ball out and now after December that same person might even be asking for financial help. I can understand you rushing to "get it" but you must also understand that after "getting it", you must now maintain it, otherwise whatever you were getting will just lose value. In my school, we see alot of old buildings and they also seem to maintain it only when someone is coming to visit, this one now, I think it's matter of importance, alot of persons view maintenance as an after thought that can happen after the initial work can gone through

There is a popular saying I heard about in the past about the importance of only buying something if you can afford it at least 2 times. A lot of people don't even think about the maintenance and all the other costs that comes with owning some of the luxirious items. At the same time, I wouldn't blame anyone that chooses to splurge on something like a car even if they can't maintain it well because at the end of the day, life is too short.
But owning car is much more enjoyable if there is exisiting cashflow to support the maintenance and the cost of owning one.

There are lots of companies and brands out there who are also willing to drop their standards when it comes to customers, in part becomes financial tools are used to make them more accessible. I'm talking about high end cars which try to lock in the lowest monthly payments but you end up agreeing to a loan over 6-8 years for a car. A car which probably loses 20% of its value as soon as you drive it away. Those sorts of cars also come with expensive maintenance requirements and if anything does go wrong the parts can cost thousands to replace. Even new tyres on some of these cars cost $500+ each. This allows people who probably shouldn't be buying and cannot truly afford the associated costs (even if they can cover the monthly loan payment). It can actually diminish a brand over time if this type of person becomes connected with them, but in the short term it'll increase sales for a CEO to unlock a bonus. The same thing is also filtering down to phones, since the latest iPhones now cost $1k+

Based on the consistent requirements from people who owns something that's expensive I would disagree with this bolded theory because it doesn't guarantee that you can maintain it and besides a maintenance isn't what a person could do ones or twice but however it will always requires regular care so if the person doesn't have a job or something that's keeping them going financially then it will come a time when they would exhaust all they have and will not be able to maintain it especially cars because is were a lot of persons mistakes usually starts from because they buy without knowing that they have a role to play in other for the car to remain healthy and that's why most people easily sell the expensive things they bought after realizing what it will be costing them to maintain it.

Do you think people pay enough attention to the cost of maintaining what they buy or do we focus too much on the initial price?
I’ll say this works in two ways depending on the individual involved. Some persons actually pay attention to just the initial price of the item while some go as far as thinking or paying attention to the cost of maintenance to avoid regrets in the future that may result in selling of that item because of cost of maintenance. So it is advisable before wanting to buy an item that will need maintenance, check your income, don’t just rely on the initial amount you have to purchase, be sure it is something you can maintain to serve you it purpose of purchase before buying. This is another angle to also look at, there some items that are sold due to distress and it becomes extremely affordable to an extent, at that point people see that as an opportunity and think less about what's going to be involved in maintaining the item. The initial amount os what makes them forget about the cost of maintenance and in the long run what they thought they bought at a low price ends up becoming becoming a liability to them. Another problem is that most people assume that they would be able to maintain the item probably from what they are expecting but after a while it turns out that they cannot keep up with such lifestyle that they try to start.

I think many people focus more on the money that they will use to buy something, but they don’t consider the cost of maintaining it. For example someone who bought an expensive car today, if he doesn’t have enough money to handle fuel, and other expenses, the car itself will automatically become a big burden to him.
Personally for me, affordability isn’t just to buy something but to make sure one can be able to maintain it without affecting other financial activities. Most times it’s what we buy that usually put us under financial pressure.

It reminds me of walking on the streets and seeing most people driving brand new cars which are quite expensive for the average local standard. They can buy it, because there is credit available, but it's hard for them to maintain it, because the monthly payments are expensive, and even more because there is huge interest involved on the deal.
Therefore, it's a bad idea to acquire vehicles following this model of negotiation. The person ends becoming an hostage of debt for years, and once it's over, the car will be already obsolete compared to the most recent models available in the market. Then, they will want to exchange it for the new one, acquiring a new debt for years as consequence. That is the cycle people are having difficult to get rid of.

Do you think people pay enough attention to the cost of maintaining what they buy or do we focus too much on the initial price?
A lot of people only focus more on the initial price just because it is affordable and not because they can maintain it, in the long run they fall into losses because they have to go out of their comfort zone just to maintain the item they bought. I remember how a friend of mine went broke all because he bought a car, but he didn't go broke immediately after he bought it because it was a reasonable price, what actually made him spend more was the maintenance, he had to pay for repairs almost every week. It's important for people to understand that if you cannot afford to get something more than three times it means that you shouldn't be purchasing it. The cost of maintenance comes first before thinking about getting any item, if this is something that would be a liability to you then you don't really have to go for it, financial management is important when it comes to such situations.

Sincerely the op is right, seems like owning a car is the most common example used because why not? The cost of fuel alone tells how expensive keeping up with a new lifestyle can be. They’re other properties that requires a high maintenance and without adequate funds one can’t keep up with, I observed the most expensive properties do cost a lot to repair and maintain compared to lesser quality so definitely it depends on the quality too. I’m not saying people should go for lower quality hell no, the point about those who purchase property above their standard, they should consider buying a property they will be able to maintain though the value and cost of things do increase as time goes clearly we can’t find anything cheap at a certain range again.
In today's world many people are trying to pick a competition with people around them or in the media, I would take for example this part of the world that I'm currently in. I see a lot of guys buying cars and other expensive things, just because they saw other people buying cars living a luxurious life. But they forgot that those people they are trying to compete with has enough resources to maintain those expensive things they have bought, this is why I don't look at what people are doing I looking into creating something different I mean something I can easily maintain without stressing myself too much. I agree with you, why people go as far as buying things they can’t maintain is due to competition. Competing with someone who is more than them and trying to show the other that they have the money to get that same thing without thinking of how they will maintain it. They must have probably even saved for a period of time to get that thing just to compete that’s why it actually hard to maintain as time goes on while the other person easily got the money out from their account with no stress, making them totally different.

Competition usually comes if we live around a high standard group. A lot of people think of it on a good side but that does also increase our spending limits. We usually start spending way more when around them just to be able to stick in that group. Buying luxuries things like watches, cars, etc is very common in that scenario because the whole group would have one better than another. Controlling emotions becomes almost impossible in this situation because of maintaining the position. I think it is okay to try and isolate ourselves for a while until we are really able to max our spending limits. Without a strong income source, we should not really think about buying these luxuries because maintenance will keep draining our pockets.

Well I believe an individual should be able to evaluate himself or herself to be able to differentiate between what they need and what they want, and what could possibly become a liability in the future that's if the person is reasonable enough though. Still, to me the way we individuals should purchase things should perhaps be based on our standards of living. Best to say if buying a car can help you by making your work faster, like in going to work or whatsoever work you are doing, then it should be something you consider because it is probably making more money for you. But if it's not ,and you are yet to reach a financial standard that is way far above the car you want to purchase or whatever the item may be then it will probably become a burden to the individual. That's all......

Yes, I don't dispute that and I didn't even say that the popular saying is absolute. Like I said in the last sentence of my reply, there have to be consistent cashflow to maintain the new lifestyle. Which is the reason why buying a car or any other item like that is just one piece of the puzzle. Imo, as long as making purchases such as that are +EV and there is sufficient finances to support the move, I would say they are worth it.

That what really happening now. our decision when it comes to money and in our spending habits can be affected by the environment around us, especially if rich people with high maintenance lifetyle lives in the same community as you... buying something because it make us feel better about ourselves with the people around us is sometimes not beneficial and may wrecked our savings. Unfortunately, this lifestyle can be stressful and possibly may cause a financial problem, particularly if we are unable to afford it. If we buy a luxury item, we might think it's a great deal, but the expenses doesnt end there, we need to think about the maintenance and other costs that we may face in the future... With all these influences that we watched in every socmeds, we can more clearly concentrate on our financial objectives without being influenced by competition. with that, financial stability can achieved by making a very good decisions, not by demonstrating that it is possible to have the same lifestyle with others.

One of the reasons why people don't pay attention to such thing is because when they have the capital of the initial price so they keep in mind that since they are able to afford it, they will have much left over or as long as they are still working they will have whatever it cost to maintain it, but sometimes the maintenance cost is way higher than they could imagine. so people get stuck in this process, since they have no other source of income to be able to add to the costing of the maintenance. On a different point, if you can afford it maintenance shouldn't be a problem right but sometimes life happens and people who could afford will not longer be able to afford and that is how they become very stuck. but some obviously is out of negligence.

Yeah that's tru for example most people says that when a child is being born in rich family he's parents duty is that they ensure him and understand that being rich doesn't mean you should spend it recklessly but always try to have the mindset of multiply your money gradually.

This is usually the reason why some people find it very difficult to maintain even the house they are living in, that is why it is very easy for us to get something that we can be able to maintain, getting it is not a problem and it is very easy, but maintaining it is actually the main problem because take a look at some people who have buy flashy cars but they could not be able to fix it when it's damage. In this life is better we act below income I know with that we will be able to have a very beautiful life. Even around us you can see a lot of houses getting damage, simply because when it was built they did not even think of maintenance since they are having more money to build it then, living below our income give us a very smoothly and perfect life, people will not even look down on you because you live below your income and everyone will see you as the most comfortable person on earth.

Do you think people pay enough attention to the cost of maintaining what they buy or do we focus too much on the initial price?
If for example the thing is an asset, maybe it has a way of generating income to maintain itself, then it doesn't matter if the person acquiring it focuses mainly on the price of acquiring it since it can maintain itself and still give some good dividend to the investor. An example can be owning an events center in a populated city, if purchased the revenue from the daily rentals would cover the cost of maintaining it and of course give some good revenue to the owner. Where it becomes difficult is if it is a liability like a residential house, private car, e.t.c, then you must need to factor in the cost of its maintenance, since you have no plan to make money from it. Do you think people pay enough attention to the cost of maintaining what they buy or do we focus too much on the initial price?
"People"? Not really. Most people don't really stop to think about these things. Some people can buy an entry-level BMW on an average salary because they can afford the monthly payment and drive it without giving it proper maintenance—with worn-out tires, etc. Some people are still smart and try to make some few bucks with it despite being a private car and use the funds to fuel it and of course maintain it. There are people who do Bolt services with their private car after work for couple of hours, using the car as a tool for a side hustle and the revenue to sort out personal expenses and maintain the car.
