The Machine Religion - 2

The Horrid Voice of Science
by Vachel Lindsay

“There’s machinery in the
butterfly;
There’s a mainspring to the
bee;
There’s hydraulics to a daisy,
And contraptions to a tree.

If we could see the birdie
That makes the chirping sound
With x-ray, scientific eyes,
We could see the wheels go
round.

And I hope all men
Who think like this
Will soon lie
Underground."

Doing The Alt-Right Thing - Mithraism - 4

Black Beard Alt-Right does Washington, D.C.
Due to a slight change in the name of the right, a change from "right" to "alt-right," I changed the name of this series.

It is a timely change based on an untimely change based on the new-old religion of Washington, D.C. religionists celebrating for the rapture of November the Eighth.

As you have most likely heard by now, the all-powerful GOP got caught doing what the media now thinks was a boo boo:
Majorities in Congress often overreach, but usually not on the very first day.

House Republicans, on the verge of a Washington takeover as the new Congress convened Tuesday, couldn’t stop themselves from trying to dilute the power of a despised ethics watchdog as their first order of business. In the process, they created an unsightly spectacle that pretty much ruined an opening-day celebration of unified Republican government, undermined their own leadership and perhaps foretold the shape of things to come.
...
“Mr. Trump campaigned that he was going to drain the swamp, and here we are on Day 1 trying to fill the swamp,” Representative Walter B. Jones, Republican of North Carolina, said after he and his colleagues hurriedly jettisoned a plan seen as a brazen attempt to weaken an independent ethics office that some felt had been unfair to lawmakers. “That is not a good way to start.”
(NY Times, emphasis added). Actually, they were simply practicing their alt-right religion (Doing The Right Thing - Mithraism, 2, 3).

Yep, "pass the lard and praise the ammunition" (Hypothesis: The Cultural Amygdala - 4).

The part of their religion which they were seized of was the same as what Karl Rove and Bush II fixed upon:
How did the bushies remove the boogie man from under your bed, since that description sounds strangely like the banksters of recent "bailout" infamy?

How did they do that you may be asking? The answer is that they did it using what they think is the "Christian way".

The very Bible they profess to follow says: "... because law brings wrath. Where there is no law, there is no transgression of the law" (Romans 4:15). Now ask yourself, "what good robber baron wants 'wrath' for doing what comes naturally"?

So, when the bushies heard the preacher in church quoting Romans 4:15 their eyes twinkled so brightly folks in the pews around them thought that a meteorite was passing overhead.

It was like the conversion of the Apostle Paul, only in reverse. It was an epiphany of the sort that changes a nation from one age into another age.

They removed the law, which made taking money from the public trough in certain ways, robbery. Thus, no robbery law, no transgression of the law bringing wrath, and thus no more robber barons.

The U.S. then entered the age of the Plunder Barons, who after gorging themselves under Bush II and the republican controlled congress, are seeing if they can corrupt the new blood recently elected.
(Bush II Eradicated The Robber Barons - 4, emphasis added). No ethics law means no ethics violations in the U.S.eh?

Yep, business as usual (a.k.a. same ole same ole) in the swamp out on Highway 61.

On The Origin of Unnatural Selection

"We Ain't Got Nuthin' Yet"
I. Introduction

One of our cultural trances (Choose Your Trances Carefully) is propaganda (Choose Your Propaganda Carefully).

Before culture, before human civilization, propaganda existed without the bells and whistles of the billion dollar industry it is today (The Deceit Business, On the Origin of Propaganda, 2).

Both religion and business (and even science) have promulgated propaganda massively and still continue to do so today.

One thing common in all three of those realms is war, in the sense that all of them at the operational level support war, and they war among themselves as they support official wardom (e.g. religion X vs. religion Y, business X vs. business Y, and scientist X vs. scinetist Y).

And, since our "knowledge" is in general handed to us by members of those professions, the underlying dynamic for our cognitive existence is belief and/or faith (The Pillars of Knowledge: Faith and Trust?).

II. Where Are We Coming From?

The story we are told is that we are the most evolved creatures on Earth, because "natural selection" brought us here from there.

The knowledge producer, Darwin, intimated about a "natural hike" from already living things into better living things.

This was happening, Darwin opined, because some force, power, energy, or whatever ("nature"), was making natural selections for us and everyone else, way before we personally were born.

He expected that it did not stop with us personally, did not stop with just making species, but went on to continually perfect existing species as "it" made new ones.

One way that was done, in the human species, was by getting rid of defective "lower" races.

Sarcastically I ask, was that type evolution done just to make us realize how much higher our race is over theirs?

It was not a foggy concept to Darwin:
"Lastly, I could show fight on natural selection having done and doing more for the progress of civilisation than you seem inclined to admit. Remember what risks nations of Europe ran, not so many centuries ago, of being overwhelmed by the Turks, and how ridiculous such an idea now is! The more civilized so-called Caucasian races have beaten the Turkish hollow in the struggle for existence. Looking to the world at no very distant date, what an endless number of the lower races [Chuck was a tad-bit racist eh?] will have been eliminated by the higher civilized races throughout the world." - Charles Darwin (1881)
(The Evolution of Anthropogenic Extinction by Catastrophe, quoting Human evolution: Darwinism, by Jan Anthony Sapp, emphasis added). Evidently, "there are many here among us," still, who are the eyes of Darwinian evolution.

I say that because "natural selection" energies seem to be tapping old Sir Survival of The Fittest on the shoulder and pointing out that there are some "natural selection" events still needing to be done (Symbolic Racism: A Look At The Science - 3).

Back to the history ...

Sir Darwin heavily persecuted even his peer scientist Lamarck, according to two well known scientists (Ward and Kirschvink).

They authored a book that Dredd Blog recently took a look at:
Charles Darwin's theories, first published more than 150 years ago, still set the paradigm of how we understand the evolution of life-but scientific advances of recent decades have radically altered that understanding. In fact the currently accepted history of life on Earth is flawed and out of date. Now two pioneering scientists, one already an award-winning popular author, deliver an eye-opening narrative that synthesizes a generation's worth of insights from new research.

Writing with zest, humor, and clarity, Ward and Kirschvink show that many of our long-held beliefs about the history of life are wrong.
(Weekend Rebel Science Excursion - 42). There is a video at the bottom of that quoted post where, among many other interesting things, the persecution of Lamarck by Darwin et. al. is discussed.

III. Natural Selection vs. Unnatural Selection

If we look around human civilization, to me two statements stand out in the context of today's post.

First, the evolutionary scientist Ernst Mayr was convinced that human intelligence was, and is, a lethal mutation (What Kind of Intelligence Is A Lethal Mutation?).

Second, another person, historian Arnold Toynbee, pointed out that a high percentage of civilizations commit suicide (Civilization Is Now On Suicide Watch).

Suicide seems like a poor selection for perpetuating one's survival, especially if one is the fittest civilization.

So, I feel that we slander nature when we improperly identify that type of unnatural selection with a wrong description: "natural selection."

I am reminded of the Vietnam warmonger ideology "destroy in order to save."

I think we should refine our nomenclature and begin to use the term "unnatural selection" to identify the points along the way when civilizations commit suicide, a.k.a. ecocide (Good Nomenclature: A Matter of Life and Death).

Thus, I would call that part of human evolution, which is brought about by lethal mutation, a process of unnatural selection.

We should sharply contrast unnatural selection, because is anathema to natural selection, which for an advanced civilization is the selection of staying alive beautifully.

Natural selection would pass The Test, while unnatural selection will not (The Tenets of Ecocosmology).

IV. Has It Has All Come To This?

We Ain't Got Nothin' Yet
(by The Blues Magoos)

One day you're up and the next day you're down
You can't face the world with your head to the ground
The grass is always greener on the other side, they say
So don't worry, boys, life will be sweet some day
Oh, oh, oh, oh
Oh, oh, oh, oh
We made enough mistakes
But you know we got what it takes

Oh, we ain't got nothin' yet
No, we ain't got nothin' yet

Nothin' can hold us and nothin' can keep us down
And someday our names will be spread all over town
We can get in while the getting is good
So make it on your own, yeah, you know that you could
Oh, oh, oh, oh
Oh, oh, oh, oh
We got to make the break
'Cause we got too much at stake

We made enough mistakes
But you know we got what it takes

V. Natural Genetics

Sir. Darwin knew nothing of genes, RNA, or DNA, because they were discovered long after him (e.g. The Double Helix).

But, we came to find out that neither did the scientists who glorified human DNA:
Some would say that genomics has been able to distil some humility into humankind. The finalised version of the human genome deprived us of the illusion that we are one of the most complex creatures on Earth — an illusion that was at the basis of some guesses that Homo sapiens was expected to have at least 100,000 genes. When we look at a table of genomes by species, and specifically at the number of genes that have been counted or estimated for each species, we notice that humans are surpassed by several plants and invertebrates.
...
... some 90 percent of the protein-encoding cells in our body are microbes ... 99 percent of the functional genes in the body are microbial ... exchanging messages with genes inside human cells ... microbes cohabitating our body outnumber human cells by a factor of 10, making us actually “superorganisms” that use our own genetic repertoire as well as those of our microbial symbionts ... We just happen to look human because our human cells are much larger than bacterial cells ... no matter how you look at it, it’s high time we acknowledge that part of being human is being microbial ...
(The Human Microbiome Congress). Those who discovered the first "human" DNA bloviated a bit too much while we were not yet aware of our microbiome (The Human Microbiome Congress).

The geneticists once actually thought all "that other stuff" was literally junk:
More problematic is the reality that the human genome is still a vast catalogue of the unknown and scarcely known. The Human Genome Project’s most startling finding was that human genes, as currently defined, make up less than 2 percent of all the DNA on the genome, and that the total number of genes is relatively small. Scientists had predicted there might be 80,000 to 140,000 human genes, but the current tally is fewer than 25,000 — as one scientific paper put it, somewhere between that of a chicken and a grape. The remaining 98 percent of our DNA, once dismissed as “junk DNA,” is now taken more seriously. Researchers have focused on introns, in the gaps between the coding segments of genes, which may play a crucial role in regulating gene expression, by switching them on and off in response to environmental stimuli.
...
If not for a virus, none of us would ever be born.

In 2000, a team of Boston scientists discovered a peculiar gene in the human genome. It encoded a protein made only by cells in the placenta. They called it syncytin.
...
What made syncytin peculiar was that it was not a human gene. It bore all the hallmarks of a gene from a virus.

Viruses have insinuated themselves into the genome of our ancestors for hundreds of millions of years.
...
It turned out that syncytin was not unique to humans. Chimpanzees had the same virus gene at the same spot in their genome. So did gorillas. So did monkeys. What’s more, the gene was strikingly similar from one species to the next.
(One Man's Junk Gene Is Another Man's Treasure Gene?). That really pisses off those who spent countless hours in college studying how human genes determine everything.

Some of them (who are reactionary) choose denial, refusing to believe current scientific discoveries which are more sound than previous erroneous ones.

That denial is typical (Global Warming / Climate Change Will Generate Dangerous Religion).

VI. Genieology Is The Opiate of Unnatural Selection

Thus, unnatural selection is the proverbial square peg in the round hole of natural selection within a certain pop-hybrid science-religion (On The Origin of Genieology).

I am sure you remember one of the incarnations of that heavily evangelized and maladjusted cognition, a.k.a. the selfish gene ideology (The Uncertain Gene, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10).

VII. Conclusion

The evolution of something that destroys anything and everything it can is not done by natural selection, it is done by unnatural selection.

There is a day and night difference (You Are Here).

It is well past the time we figured that out,

So that we can stop being predators on life itself, rather than living within life (The Psychology of the Notion of Collective Guilt).

Life itself is not short, it is many billions of years old, so dig it Oil-Qaeda (Oil-Qaeda: The Indictment).

The lyrics are in Section IV above.

Global Warming / Climate Change Will Generate Dangerous Religion - 2

The main stream media's ISIS loves oil as much as the main stream media's Oil-Qaeda does.

Now, Pope Francis is on a crusade to counter that flirtation with the middle east oil and its control (A History of Oil Addiction - 4, 3, 2, 1).

A cultural  trance addiction started by the religious belief of a high-powered military figure in the British Empire (The Universal Smedley - 2, Viva Egypt - 2).

Which has now come down to a suicide watch over the Petroleum Civilization created in the wake of that religious belief (Civilization Is Now On Suicide Watch, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8).

Thus, we have a religious struggle of ideas about the nature of the Earth (in the context of a global civilization) concerning being addicted to the burning of fossil fuels.

In the U.S.eh? the dynamic of Exceptional American Denial has taken on an evangelical air in the three ring circus of right-wing politics.

In that arena both the High Priest of Denial and Bishop X want the Pope to stifle it.

So, basically this religious element, of the phenomenon of ideological conflict concerning global warming induced climate change, boils down to "Is God causing it or is human civilization causing it?"

In the realm of scientists, there is a massively one-sided consensus that God is not causing it, humans are.

I would expect Pope Francis to be more persuasive than his theocratic opponents in the U.S. government, and more persuasive than the wannabe theocrats hoping to be elected into U.S. government office.

The official document is slated to be released Thursday, but a draft of the encyclical was leaked.

It purportedly says:
"Humanity is called to take note of the need for changes in lifestyle and changes in methods of production and consumption to combat this warming, or at least the human causes that produce and accentuate it," he wrote in the draft. "Numerous scientific studies indicate that the greater part of the global warming in recent decades is due to the great concentration of greenhouse gases…given off above all because of human activity."

The pope will also single out those obstructing solutions. In an apparent reference to climate-change deniers, the draft states: "The attitudes that stand in the way of a solution, even among believers, range from negation of the problem, to indifference, to convenient resignation or blind faith in technical solutions."
(Mother Jones). Pope Francis goes on the offensive against deniers in his church and those not in his church.

The Pope is not a feudal vassal like the European Church was during feudal times there, but the American Catholics who are opposing him seem to be vassals or serfs:
The Church, too, had her place in the feudal system. She too was granted territorial fiefs, became a vassal, possessed immunities. It was the result of her calm, wide sympathy, turning to the new nations, away from the Roman Empire, to which many Christians thought she was irrevocably bound. By the baptism of Clovis she showed the baptism of Constantine had not tied her to the political system. So she created a new world out of chaos, created the paradox of barbarian civilization. In gratitude kings and emperors endowed her with property; and ecclesiastical property has not infrequently brought evils in its train. The result was disputed elections; younger sons of nobles were intruded into bishoprics, at times even into the papacy. Secular princes claimed lay investiture of spiritual offices. The cause of this was feudalism, for a system that had its basis on land tenure was bound at last to enslave a Church that possessed great landed possessions.
(American Feudalism - 2). Next comes the decision phase of individuals faced with choosing between the American Oil Religion of Oil-Qaeda (Oilah Akbar! Oilah Akbar!) and the Pope's version (Catholicism).

That decision making will probably follow the way such things are traditionally decided (The Pillars of Knowledge: Faith and Trust?).

Why The Military Can't Defend Against The Invasion

POGO at the garbage patch
Background

This post has a different subject matter from a previous post (War - Great Stimulant - Let's Invade us, 2).

It also has a different subject from what some military minds claim to be the military's greatest enemy (Your Health Is Their Number 1 Enemy?!).

It is closer to what some other military minds say is their greatest threat (Has The Navy Fallen For The Greatest Hoax?).

To grasp the concept of the invader being talked about today, one needs to combine POGO 101, with what the Pentagon told the president, (even as the Pentagon continues to be the number one single user of dirty oil,  and played a part in getting us hooked to begin with), all of which ends up being the gist of "we have met the enemy and he is us" (see POGO cartoon @ upper-left).

Thus, the invasion I am talking about today, is the invasion by the sea, or, as it is commonly called, sea level rise (SLR).

False Security, Inc.

Paul Revere, today, would be all about "two if by sea" because that is where the invasion is coming from, and it won't be an invasion by the British.

Senator Inhofe, High Priest of Denialism, is all about "one none if by land God" as the chair of the clueless environmental committee in the senate.

They have been scared silly it would seem:
What can be said when a young naive boy burns his nuts off on an airplane while playing a video game in his head?

Especially when it causes the whole commercial aviation system, together with the infamous homeland security gang (disorganized into a strange meme-complex) to go nuts too?

The Keystone Kops meme-complex comes to mind.
(The Keystone Complex To The Rescue, cf. Bart Simpson ... Security). They are all lathered up over things that, by comparison, are less dangerous than:
  • You are 35,079 times more likely to die from heart disease than from a terrorist
  • You are 33,842 times more likely to die from cancer than from a terrorist
  • obesity is 5,882 to 23,528 times more likely to kill you than a terrorist
  • you are 5,882 times more likely to die from medical error than terrorism
  • you’re 4,706 times more likely to drink yourself to death than die from terrorism
  • you are 1,904 times more likely to die from a car accident than from a terrorist
  • your meds are thousands of times more likely to kill you than Al Qaeda
  • you’re 2,059 times more likely to kill yourself than die at the hand of a terrorist
  • you’re 452 times more likely to die from risky sexual behavior than terrorism
  • you’re 353 times more likely to fall to your death ... than die in a terrorist attack
  • you are 271 times more likely to die from a workplace accident than terrorism
  • you are 187 times more likely to starve to death in America than be killed by terrorism
  • you’re about 22 times more likely to die from a brain-eating zombie parasite than a terrorist
  • you were more than 9 times more likely to be killed by a law enforcement officer than by a terrorist
  • [being] “crushed to death by ... [TV] or furniture” [as likely as] being killed by terrorist
  • Americans are 110 times more likely to die from contaminated food than terrorism
  • you are more likely to be killed by a toddler than a terrorist
  • you [are] four times more likely to be struck by lightning than killed by a terrorist
(Terrorism We Can Believe In? - 3). And yet, like Don Quixote, we spend trillions of dollars worrying about things that are not, by comparison, dangerous to us:
The Washington Post has begun a block buster series following a couple of years of research.

They expose some of MOMCOM's excesses in the field of spying ("intelligence"), showing that American spying, like the military, is out of control:
The investigation's other findings include:

* Some 1,271 government organizations and 1,931 private companies work on programs related to counterterrorism, homeland security and intelligence in about 10,000 locations across the United States.

* An estimated 854,000 people, nearly 1.5 times as many people as live in Washington, D.C., hold top-secret security clearances.

* In Washington and the surrounding area, 33 building complexes for top-secret intelligence work are under construction or have been built since September 2001. Together they occupy the equivalent of almost three Pentagons or 22 U.S. Capitol buildings - about 17 million square feet of space.

* Many security and intelligence agencies do the same work, creating redundancy and waste. For example, 51 federal organizations and military commands, operating in 15 U.S. cities, track the flow of money to and from terrorist networks.

* Analysts who make sense of documents and conversations obtained by foreign and domestic spying share their judgment by publishing 50,000 intelligence reports each year - a volume so large that many are routinely ignored.

(Washington Post). That only scratches the surface, the story is also that no one knows all about it or how much it costs, hence, it is out of control.
(The Keystone Complex To The Rescue). That story reveals a shocking anti-American development on its own, but the story is all the more egregious in the context of the republicans wanting to cut education, health care, social security, etc., but not those senseless republican behemoths.
(Homeland Security Happy Daze - 2). When those neoCons took it to the hoop and started spying on all Americans, the courts held that such activity by the military NSA is illegal (ACLU vs. Clapper, Alexander, Hagel, Holder, and Mueller - 13).

For a decade these same luddites have been weakening, or trying to weaken, NASA climate scientists who have been warning "two if by sea" as they should.

But they have been weakened and damaged by those who should be strengthening them:
Changes in the area and volume of the two polar ice sheets in Antarctica ... and Greenland are intricately linked to changes in global climate, and could result in sea-level changes that could severely affect the densely populated coastal regions on Earth. Melting of the West Antarctica part of the Antarctic ice sheet alone could cause a sea-level rise of approximately 6 meters (m). The potential sea-level rise after melting of the entire Antarctic ice sheet is estimated to be about 73 m. In spite of its importance, the mass balance (the net volumetric gain or loss) of the Antarctic ice sheet is poorly known; it is not known whether the ice sheet is growing or shrinking. As a result, measurement of changes in the Antarctic ice sheet has been given a very high priority in recommendations by the Polar Research Board of the National Research Council, by the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR), and by the National Science Foundation’s Office of Polar Programs.
(The Agnotology of Sea Level Rise Via Ice Melt). The invader is poorly known because our leaders in government and business are all too often psychopaths.

On the Series Posts page (tab at top of Dredd Blog pages), under the heading "SEA LEVEL RISE" are links to posts about the invader.

Those posts will inform readers of the meaning of this quote on the Dredd Blog quotes page:

Will This Float Your Boat - 10

Chesapeake Bay: Largest estuary in the U.S.A.
In some previous posts of this series the subject was: the number of people affected by sea level rise (SLR) in the North East.

Specifically, I focused on the Hudson River and "Hudson" / NY Bay area.

But, I also wrote "[e]xpand the scope of these wonderful opportunities south to New Jersey ..." (Will This Float Your Boat - 9).

So, today we will go a bit further south for a look at a well known area that has a similar SLR problem as the Hudson River Bay area, but one that is a larger estuary than the Hudson Bay: we will consider the ports and the estuary of Chesapeake Bay:
"With its expansive coastline, low-lying topography, and growing coastal population, the Chesapeake Bay region is among the places in the nation most vulnerable to sea-level rise."
...
"Average sea levels in the Chesapeake Bay have been rising. Many places along the bay have seen a one-foot increase in relative sea-level rise over the 20th century, six inches due to global warming and another six inches due to naturally subsiding coastal lands--a factor that places the Chesapeake Bay region at particular risk."
...
"Already, at least 13 islands in the bay have disappeared entirely, and many more are at risk of being lost soon."
(Chesapeake Bay and Global Warming, 2007-08, emphasis added). If you think that description reads like the description of the vulnerable coast of New England, at Hudson River Bay, it is because it is under the exact same threats from SLR:
The harms associated with climate change are serious and well recognized. The Government’s own objective assessment of the relevant science and a strong consensus among qualified experts indicate that global warming threatens, inter alia, a precipitate rise in sea levels, severe and irreversible changes to natural ecosystems, a significant reduction in winter snowpack with direct and important economic consequences, and increases in the spread of disease and the ferocity of weather events. [quoting U.S. Supreme Court]
...
"By volume, more than 95 percent of U.S. international trade moves through the nation's ports and harbors, with about 50 percent of these goods being hazardous materials." [quoting NOAA 'Ports']
(Will This Float Your Boat - 8). For those who don't get it yet (the threat to national security, national economy, and American stability), see the satire @ Will This Float Your Boat - 9, and the information about the great difficulty involved with official processes dealing with solving port problems (The Agnotology of Sea Level Rise Via Ice Melt).

Likewise, for those who do not get the danger to current civilization, apply these principles and realities to the 196 countries with more than 4,764 ports of current civilization (World Port Source).

As I indicated above, previous posts covered the port-related danger to the San Francisco Bay area (The Evolution of Models - 5 and 6), as well as New York's Hudson River Bay (FERC Plan To Limit Overpopulation?).

So, today let's consider what ports are involved in the Chesapeake Bay area:
Virginia:

Port of Alexandria
Port of Norfolk
Port Cape Charles
Port of Chesapeake
Port of Hopewell
Port of Newport News
Port of Piney Point
Port of Portsmouth
Port of Richmond
Port of Yorktown

Maryland:

Port Annapolis
Port of Baltimore
Port of Cambridge
Somers Cove Marina
City Yacht Basin
Naval Air Station Patuxent River
Solomons Island Harbor
(World Ports: Virginia, Maryland). These ports that impact multiple millions of Americans (e.g. international commerce) are under the same threats as the New York and New England ports (danger of Greenland Ice Sheet melt-collapse generated SLR).

The greatest danger is not recognizing the danger, and the second greatest danger is the inability to do anything about it in real time, once anyone even notices.

This was discussed in the context of other ports:
However, several barriers to climate adaptation have been recognised (Becker 2011, IAPH 2011, UKCIP 2007), including inconsistency between organisational planning timeframes (5 – 15 years) compared with climate projections of 30 – 90 years; as well as the uncertainty of local climate projections leading to decision-makers delaying action until there is perceived to be more certainty. To help address these concerns, this report proposes a hybrid “risk / vulnerability” approach to understanding and adapting to climate change. That is, consideration of current day vulnerabilities to extreme weather events, integrated with an assessment of future climate risks." (Climate Resilient Ports, emphasis added).

"First proposed more than 20 years ago, the Savannah Harbor Expansion Project has been studied and delayed more times over the past two decades than anyone can count. So it’s no surprise that the big news at the Georgia Ports Authority (GPA) this year has been the approval of the massive project to deepen the Savannah River and harbor to expand the Port of Savannah’s capacity.

The Savannah Harbor Expansion Project (SHEP) finally got the go-ahead in October – 15 years after it first received a congressional OK in 1999 – when the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the Georgia Department of Transportation and the GPA signed a Project Partnership Agreement (PPA). After years of studies, delays and lawsuits that both stalled the project and pushed projected costs sky high, construction was scheduled to begin by the end of 2014 on what has been called the most critical infrastructure development project in Georgia in decades." (Georgia Trend, emphasis added).
(The Agnotology of Sea Level Rise Via Ice Melt). Even when states seriously consider the danger to their coastal ports, cold molasses moves faster.

Several states under neoCon control have been ignoring the SLR threat for years and decades, because "it does not compute" or "it is outside our comfort zone" (The Epistemology of Goldilocks RE: Sea Level Rise).

It is the folly of fools to think that ignoring this problem is going to make it go away.

The terrors frozen deep inside Greenland and Antarctica are rising to the song of an accelerated threat, rising to the song of global warming induced climate change, rising to drown the Earth destroyers (The Question Is: How Much Acceleration Is Involved In SLR?, 2, 3, 4).

The Epistemology of Goldilocks RE: Sea Level Rise

The comfort zones of The Comfort Zone
I. Introduction

Goldilocks had a notion of "too this" or "too that," and "just right." (Goldilocks Principle).

One could also describe the structure of her analysis as the comfort zone surrounded by two zones bereft of sufficient comfort, however, that is technically correct only if her comfort zone falls within the comfort zone of the majority ("comfort zone: the range of atmospheric temperature and humidity considered comfortable for most people" - Dictionary).

Thus, the comfort zone is an issue that comes up when global warming induced climate change is addressed.

II. The Uncomfortable Zones

"I am not comfortable with that" can apply to, among other things, climate, ideas, prices, colors, laws, beds, science, chairs, politics, music, or knowledge.

It is a perception based on "I know what makes me comfortable or uncomfortable."

Thus, it is what we think of as "personal knowledge."

Epistemology is "a branch of philosophy that investigates the origin, nature, methods, and limits of human knowledge."

Epistemologists realize that we are constantly playing the role of Goldilocks in our daily lives, especially where knowledge is concerned (The Pillars of Knowledge: Faith and Trust?).

Thus, the essence of a personal comfort zone, whether in or out of the comfort zone, determines our reaction to a subcategory of climate change known as sea level rise (SLR).

I bring it up because, whether we are a scientist or a layperson, we are not good at this:
"Why are we so bad at knowing ... Eric Schwitzgebel, in “Perplexities of Consciousness,” contends that our minds, rather than being open-access, are largely hidden territory. Despite what we believe about our powers of introspection, the reality is that we know awfully little about what our conscious experience amounts to. Even when reporting current experience, we make divergent, confused and even contradictory claims about what it’s like to be on the inside [of our own cognition]."
(Know Thyself: Easier Said Than Done, emphasis added). The cognitive scientist Dr. G. Lakoff wrote:
Probably 98 percent of your reasoning is unconscious - what your brain is doing behind the scenes. Reason is inherently emotional. You can't even choose a goal, much less form a plan and carry it out, without a sense that it will satisfy you, not disgust you. Fear and anxiety will affect your plans and your actions. You act differently, and plan differently, out of hope and joy than out of fear and anxiety.

Thought is physical. Learning requires a physical brain change: Receptors for neurotransmitters change at the synapses, which changes neural circuitry. Since thinking is the activation of such circuitry, somewhat different thinking requires a somewhat different brain. Brains change as you use them-even unconsciously. It's as if your car changed as you drove it, say from a stick shift gradually to an automatic.
(What Orwell Didn't Know, pp. 68-9). In other words: "What do you see when you turn out the light? ... I can't tell you, but I know it's mine ... I get by with a little help from my friends" (Beatles).

III. Groups Play A Part In Drawing SLR Contours

Today, I want to look at the Goldilocks Principle in the context of SLR and how it is formed by the culture we abide in, whether we are a scientist or a layperson.

A paper to that effect intimates:
In this paper, I introduce the emerging theory of judgment aggregation as a framework for studying institutional design in social epistemology. When a group or collective organization is given an epistemic task, its performance may depend on its ‘aggregation procedure’, i.e. its mechanism for aggregating the group members' individual beliefs or judgments into corresponding collective beliefs or judgments endorsed by the group as a whole. I argue that a group's aggregation procedure plays an important role in determining whether the group can meet two challenges: the ‘rationality challenge’ and the ‘knowledge challenge’. The rationality challenge arises when a group is required to endorse consistent beliefs or judgments; the knowledge challenge arises when the group's beliefs or judgments are required to track certain truths. My discussion seeks to identify those properties of an aggregation procedure that affect a group's success at meeting each of the two challenges.
(Journal Episteme, Judgment Aggregation, PDF here). In terms of SLR, this applies to all the climate change groups, such as the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).

The individual scientists in climate change groups have their own comfort zone to contend with, as well as the group's comfort zone.

As the paper points out, final reports are sometimes an aggregate, a report that tries to make everyone in the group as comfortable as can be.

IV. One Group Solution: A Range

The current technique is to include a range of values in SLR reports, such as, "from x to y of SLR between the years a and b."

The individual members can identify with x, y, or somewhere in between, thus the unity factor, in terms of member comfort zones, is likely to increase.

V. Too Much "This" Or Not Enough "That"

When a range does not please everyone in the group, or even those outside the group, sometimes there are protests based on the "too this" or "too that" zones outside the comfort zone of those who are complaining (see Goldilocks Principle @ section I. Introduction).

When the discomfort feels excruciating there is usually going to be someone yelling "ouch!" (RTCC, Nature, Climate Central).

In appellate courts of law this is called dissent, and as a general rule it is not frowned upon, in terms of it being considered unprofessional.

VI. The Consensus: We Face Catastrophic SLR

Some of the dissent is unprofessional or ignorant because it is based on shrill, total denial of what SLR is going to do (Will This Float Your Boat - 8).

Other dissent is based on being uncomfortable with what is called "hopium," and is associated with admitting to the problem we face, but not formulating a warning that is serious enough.

Thus, these dissenters exclaim, the public is operating under an illusion generated by a false hope, which is in turn generated by underestimates.

Some groups, such as the IPCC, have admitted to that in the past, their excuse being that there was not a sufficient body of data based on sufficient studies.

Their solution is to not report on "from x to y of SLR between the years a and b" in a complete way.

The stronger dissent (which I subscribe to) does not exonerate them in response to their excuse.

That is because the standard to apply is what they "should have found out" as professionals (e.g. see "In spite of its importance ... the Antarctic ice sheet is poorly known" here).

Professional scientists are charged with an ethical unction based on what a professional should do in a given circumstance.

There have been warnings from notable professional scientists all along the way.

Warnings about issues from excess CO2 emission dangers to ongoing SLR on our warming globe.

A globe on which the ice sheets will melt catastrophically, at some point in time, and SLR will thereby also become catastrophic.

But that said, by and large the most denial and greatest resistance to the science has not come from the scientific community.

It has come from governments and leaders who have been perverted by the oil industry.

Perverted into falsifying and/or watering down the dangers they have caused (Oil-Qaeda - The Indictment).

VII. Conclusion

The comfort zone of many (e.g. "our technology is just right for solving the SLR problem") is being catered to, as if there will be no consequences if we do not make the all-time greatest of efforts to leave fossil fuels in the ground.

A civilization that deludes itself with a little comfort zone hopium will suffer orders of magnitude more than it would if it suffers less now while solving the big problem.

SLR is a terrible, self-inflicted threat (Civilization Is Now On Suicide Watch, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8).

Will This Float Your Boat - 9

Sea level rise brings job diversity to America
Today I am giving out free sea level rise (SLR) projections for stock market purchases leading up to the year 2100.

First off, the easy one, purchase stock in moving companies.

Purchase stock in companies building new housing of all sorts, inland 10-20 miles, and beyond.

Purchase a farm up-state.

Why?

The great job storm is coming!

The sea is going to swallow a lot of real estate: "Sea ... level rise in New York City ... worst case of up to six feet ... by 2100" (NASA New York City Climate Change 2015 Report).

That is the worst case expected by conservative models that have consistently been
Downtown Tomorrow
underestimating the rate and scope of SLR concerning:
New York City is the most populous city in the United States and the center of the New York metropolitan area, one of the most populous urban agglomerations in the world. A global power city, New York exerts a significant impact upon commerce, finance, media, art, fashion, research, technology, education, and entertainment. The home of the headquarters of the United Nations, New York is an important center for international diplomacy, and has been described as the cultural capital of the world.
(New York City). That is only the half of it (121 threatened cities and towns, home to 9,142,669).

Expand the scope of these wonderful opportunities south to New Jersey, then north to New England City and Town Areas (NECTA), and the opportunities for us easily double, because the sea is an equal opportunity sub-merger.

I mean that the opportunities to move millions of people into millions of new dwellings, on thousands of miles and miles of new roads, leading to millions of new businesses of all kinds, in new shopping malls everywhere inland.

Don't forget new schools, factories, and stock markets (Wall Street will be moved and renamed).

After that, invest in demolition and construction company stock.

All or part of the old ports and buildings will need to be cleared out for new ports and new buildings (to handle international trade) of course:
Considered one of the largest natural harbors in the world, the port is by
Buy stock in moving companies
tonnage the third largest in the United States and the busiest on the East Coast.

The port is the nation's top gateway for international flights and its busiest center for overall passenger and air freight flights. There are two foreign-trade zones (FTZ) within the port: FTZ 1, the first in the nation, established in 1937, on the New York side of the port; and FTZ 49, on the New Jersey side.

In 2010, 4,811 ships entered the harbor carrying over 32.2 million metric tons of cargo valued at over $175 billion. The port handled $208 billion in shipping cargo in 2011. In 2014, the port handled 3,342,286 containers and 393,931 automobiles.
(Port of New York and New Jersey). It won't take Chris "Speedy" Christie and his port buddies (yes, they drink a bit of wine) to move all the things, down there on the Hudson, out of there (look at how fast they did are doing the Sandy repairs).

I am telling you regular Dredd Blog readers, a great job storm is coming like the world
Groundhog Day Foundation
has never seen.

And this job storm is backed by The Groundhog Day Foundation (see graphic to the left, and link).

The SLR will continue for perhaps a hundred years or so, and each morning when one wakes up, the same job has to be done again. Yes!

Move those ports inland, again, move more people inland, again, build new roads, again, tear down the old ad infinitum, bring in the new ad nauseam.

And many will have religious experiences like never before, hanging around corners singing "that is me in the corner losing my religion."

Why? ... because all the liberals will have to repent and admit that the denier conservatives were right, are right, and will always be right.

Those righteous brothers have brought endless jobs to America by realizing the benefits of carbon pollution (GOP Head of Senate Environment Committee Says Carbon Pollution Is Good For The Earth).

Rejoice (in following episodes we will discuss how Senator Inhofe is going to be praised for bringing The Groundhog Day Phenomenon to the whole globe ... beginning with San Francisco Libruls) !!!

Message of Science & Religion - Western - 4

The Hypothetical Epistle
Put down your copy of The Holy Origin of Species, The Holy Bible, The Holy Koran, The Holy Vedas, and The Holy Book of Atheism for a moment.

Put away your notion of "my doom is better than your doom" for a short while as well.

And I will too.

Then, let's focus on what so many who espouse any of those ideologies have noticed: that there is overlap on a major issue, which The Guardian calls The Biggest Story (What are the risks of telling the biggest story in the world?).

This series began years ago to consider the concept of doom that is prevalent in both climate and war science as well as in climate and war religion:
Science and religion both tell us of future catastrophe and a way out.

They both tell us to learn to live together to avoid the catastrophe, and they both tell us we must go into "heaven" or suffer "hell" for it. Yes they do.
...
Science says our star the sun will destroy the earth in the future, but there is a way out.

We must go into the heavens and find another home planet to live upon.

We must learn to live together here and now, and be decent to this planet in the interim.
...
If we do not travel into the heavens our fate will be determined when the sun eventually turns the inner four planets of this solar system into the fires of hell.

Religion talks of potential Armageddon but those who are good will be spared, those who are good will go into heaven to a better home.

It generally teaches us that the golden rule is to be good to each other treating one another as we would be treated. If we do not there will be a hell instead of a heaven.

That is essentially the same story told by two factions, but the how it is done is where the two stories drift far apart.

Science teaches us we must physically do it ourselves, but religion in a general sense teaches us that we are to be saved by metaphysical intervention.
(Message of Science & Religion - Western, 2009). The advent of the murder suicide pact of current civilization (Civilization Is Now On Suicide Watch, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8) is way, way ahead of the very long term solar catastrophe written about in that quote.

The threat of doom in the near term is a matter of focus on nuclear war and the environmental destruction of our life support system on Earth.

Let's take a look at the environmental suicide dynamics, from both the scientific as well as from the religious sides of the equation.

Today's religious and scientific contemplation:
The Vatican is hosting a climate change summit that will focus on the need for decisive action to combat global warming as a moral imperative and Christian duty, especially given its impact on poor people.

The Protect the Earth, Dignify Humanity meeting in Rome on Tuesday is a precursor to the release of Pope Francis’s encyclical on the environment, which is due out in June or July and is expected to centre on the duty of the faithful to address climate change, whatever its causes.

Pope Francis is not scheduled to speak at the summit but was due to have a private meeting with the UN secretary general, Ban Ki-moon, who will be delivering the keynote address. The planned remarks by Cardinal Peter Turkson, the president of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace, will also be closely followed because of his role drafting the encyclical.

The summit – which will include speakers and representatives from all major religions – has brought about a rare meeting of minds between scientists and religious officials on climate change, even if they frame their arguments in different ways.
(Vatican Climate Change Summit, emphasis added). Both religious and scientific disciplines have members who realize that destroying the life support system of the Earth is the mindset of those who are not here (You Are Here).

The alternative is a murder-suicide pact (MOMCOM's Mass Suicide & Murder Pact - 5, 4, 3, 2, 1).

One is good, the other is not.

Our civilization must learn which is which in order to pass the test.

The conference overseers produced this statement:
"Humanity has entered a new era. Our technological prowess has brought humanity to a crossroads. We are the inheritors of two centuries of remarkable waves of technological change: steam power, railroads, the telegraph, electrification, automotive transport, aviation, industrial chemistry, modern medicine, computing, and now the digital revolution, biotechnologies and nanotechnologies. These advances have reshaped the world economy into one that is increasingly urban and globally connected, but also more and more unequal.

However, just as humanity confronted “Revolutionary Change” (Rerum Novarum) in the Age of Industrialization in the 19th century, today we have changed our natural environment to such an extent that scientists are redefining the current period as the Age of the Anthropocene, that is to say an age when human action, through the use of fossil fuels, is having a decisive impact on the planet. If current trends continue, this century will witness unprecedented climate changes and ecosystem destruction that will severely impact us all."

Doing The Right Thing - Mithraism - 3

Mithra kills the bull while wearing a mini-skirt
There are several Dredd Blog series, besides this one, that present posts which deal with the strange phenomenon of Mithraism.

These are some of them: On The Origin of the Crusader Pathogen, Another Holy Day For Modern Ancient Mithraism, On The Origin of The Bully Religion, The Virgin MOMCOM - 6.

Today, I want to discuss another example where American Mithraism shows through the thin veneer, to once again expose itself (because currently there are two Mithraic cults which are a danger to civilization, and even a danger to the human species itself).

The one cult is fake Islam, while the other is fake Christianity in America.

Those two cults are both "pure" Mithraism.

Recently, both President Obama and Pope Francis alluded to that reality, when they explained that there are those who associate themselves with both "Christianity" and "Islam," but who are neither.

Since this post deals with the ones calling themselves "Christian," let's start off with this quote from one who calls himself a previous fundie:
"... here’s where Dr. Beckum got himself into some serious problems: he wasn’t speaking about listening to rock and roll or wearing skirts that weren’t knee high– he was talking about the golden calf of American Christianity. He went on to say,
“Anyone who has made a decision to follow Jesus realizes that the goal of a being a Christian is to become Christ-like.”
Sounds good so far, but starting to get edgy with this Jesus-likeness stuff. But here’s where he went completely off the rails:
“I am extremely troubled. I have been for a long time and I have hesitated to address this subject publicly, but I cannot keep silent about it any longer … I don’t think it is an under-statement to say that our culture is addicted to violence, guns, war, revenge and retaliation. Unfortunately, so are a lot of Christians… So, what does Jesus have to say about it. Again, if you are not a follower of Jesus you can relax. This doesn’t concern you. But Christians have to do something with this. I have to do something with the words of Jesus and his actions… We have to be very careful about equating patriotism with Christianity. We never say God and … anything. God is above all, everything else is underneath … We have put “our way of life”/ freedom on the top rung. If you mess with it I’ll blow your head off. For a Christian what is on the top rung? Love for all."
Dr. Beckum ended his sermon by reminding the students that not only did Jesus teach radical enemy love, but that we should serve them, and forgive them as well.

In many Christian circles you can talk about the Bible all you want, a you can speak as much Christianese as possible, but as Dr. Beckum has now learned, you cannot talk about what Jesus taught regarding enemy love. That is off-limits and heresy.
...
The best way to understand the cultural scenario is to realize ... that there
Mithra shoots the shit out of stuff
are two different types of Christianity. One is a movement of people who want to live and be like Jesus. The other (and far more common, far more powerful) is a civil and political religion that is simply named Christianity. The civil political religion named Christianity is addicted to both political power and violence, and thus finds the message of Jesus offensive. When they encounter the other kind of Christian- the kind that actually believes in following Jesus- they have an immediate need to persecute them in some for or another, as we see in the case of Dr. Beckum, who actually did lose his job because of speaking the name of Jesus.
"
(Formerly Fundie, emphasis added). That religious worship of war (as this Dredd Blog series, and some others mentioned above, point out) is Mithraism posing as Christianity and/or Islam as it has for thousands of years.

Another place where "the two religions divide" is climate change (Officialdom bans use of term "climate change" & "global warming"; cf. Global Warming / Climate Change Will Generate Dangerous Religion).

The priests of the dogma "God is killing billions with global climate change so he can save them" are at odds with the scientists, and with Pope Francis (Inhofe's One Man Troofiness Crusade).

Not that those who suffer from Agnotology care or even understand (Agnotology: The Surge - 16).

Like Tina Turner sang, "What's love got to do with it?"

The next post in this series is here, the previous post in this series is here.

The Christian sermon by Dr. Randy Beckum (Transcript of Dr. Beckum's Sermon), which caused the Mithra worshippers to become revengeful:
