Manilla Road - Playground Of The Damned

Genre: Heavy/Epic
Country: U.S.A.
Year: 2011

1. Jackhammer
2. Into The Maelstrom
3. Playground Of The Damned
4. Grindhouse
5. Abattoir De La Mort
6. Fire Of Ashurbanipal
7. Brethren Of The Hammer
8. Art Of War

15th album by Manilla Road. It is full of the epic/doom metal the band is known for. The overall tempo is slow and heavy. There are plenty of kick ass guitar riff and solos on this album, and Manilla Road make great use of the classic acoustic introduction on a couple of tunes as well. If there is any downside here it may be in the mix. It actually lacks so much polish that it almost sounds as if these are demo recordings.

Candlemass - Epicus Doomicus Metallicus

Genre: Heavy/Doom/Epic
Country: Sweden
Year: 1986

1. Solitude
2. Demons Gate
3. Crystal Ball
4. Black Stone Wielder
5. Under The Oak
6. A Sorcerer's Pledge

Debut album by Candlemass. It features slow, lumbering riffs straight out of the Black Sabbath handbook and vocals delivered in a baritone, operatic style. At its time of release, it sounded great but over the years, it has seemed to get better with age and that is the sign of a quality release. All tracks stand out equally on their own and each song has its own characteristics to make them unique. Perhaps the saddest thing about this album is that this would be the first and last appearance of vocalist Johann Lanquist.

Solitude Aeturnus - Into The Depths Of Sorrow

Genre: Heavy/Doom
Country: U.S.A.
Year: 1991

1. Dawn Of Antiquity (A Return To Despair)
2. Opaque Divinity
3. Transcending Sentinels
4. Dream Of Immortality
5. Destiny Falls To Ruin
6. White Ship
7. Mirror Of Sorrow
8. Where Angels Dare To Tread

Debut album by Solitude Aeturnus. With this debut the band more or less have redefined the genre of doom metal, with a sound that should not only appeal the die-hard-doomsters, but also progressive and power metal fans, because the variety that this band has to offer is just excellent and the vocals are nothing short of divine! They didn't follow the classic doom style marked by bands like St. Vitus, Obsessed and co., but chose a very epic, melodic and varied variant.

Agnes Vein - Duality

Genre: Doom/Sludge/Epic
Country: Greece
Year: 2010

1. Melkor
2. In Orbit With The Cosmos
3. Earendil
4. The Fall
5. Duality
6. Outro

Fantastic debut album by Agnes Vein. Being very original, they managed to hide well their influences by Solitude Aeturnus, Candlemass, Neurosis, Primordial and Bathory, and they have created a great album for this dark genre. Amazing black metal screams, heavy riffing and strong, steady pounding. The different dimensions to their approach makes this a very enjoyable.
