Country: U.S.A.
Year: 1985

1. Screams From The Grave
2. Vicious Attack

5. The Living And The Dead
6. Stronger Than Evil
7. Don't Walk Alone
8. Game Of Death

Debut album by Abattoir, one of the very first speed metal bands. What we have here is full throttle speed metal with enough hooks to maintain someone's interest. It’s a galloping ride of an album that never really lets up and clocks only 27 minutes!

Flames - Made In Hell

Genre: Speed
Country: Greece
Year: 1985

1. I'm Dressed In Black Suede
2. Flames (Made In Hell)
3. Final Curtain Call
4. Brain Industry
5. False Alarm
6. Beware Of The Dogs Of War
7. The Hut
8. Isolation
9. Gwendolin

Debut album by Flames. Here you can find the first steps of this legendary thrash group. The production is awful, drums sound like drum-machine (is it or not?), the vocalist's accent sucks, but the compositions are flawless. Perfect ideas of primitive speed/thrash, memorable songs, fast tempos and great guitarwork. Concerning the era and the conditions of the greek scene these days, this is actually a true speed/thrash gem.

Broken Bones - Bonecrusher

Genre: Punk/Hardcore
Country: England
Year: 1985

1. Seeing Through My Eyes
2. The Point Of Agony
3. Decapitated
4. It's Like
5. Death Is Imminent
6. Treading Underfoot
7. Bonecrusher
8. Delusion & Anger
9. Choose Death
10. Untamed Power

2nd album by Broken Bones. A solid release that finds the band more tight and more mature compared to their earlier releases. All members rule their instruments, with searing guitar solos, excellent bass riffs, precise drumming and shouted vocals with heavy british accent. This is the album where the first signs of thrash/crossover elements are appearring in their music.

Exciter - Long Live The Loud

Genre: Heavy/Speed
Country: Canada
Year: 1985

1. Fall Out
2. Long Live The Loud
3. I Am The Beast
4. Victims Of Sacrifice
5. Beyond The Gates Of Doom
6. Sudden Impact
7. Born To Die
8. Wake Up Screaming

3rd album by Exciter. Loosing in power compared to their previous releases, this release was really underestimated by the fans. It's still a solid piece of speed/heavy, with slightly better production than before. The most important change between this and the previous is probably the vocal quality.

Sacrilege - Behind The Realms Of Madness

Genre: Thrash/Crust
Country: England
Year: 1985

1. Life Line
2. Shadow from Mordor
3. At Death's Door
4. A Violation of Something Sacred
5. The Closing Irony
6. Out of Sight Out of Mind

Debut album by Sacrilege. The band plays fast and filthy thrash with a huge hardcore/punk influence. Thrashing riffs, blasting drums and an amazing female vocalist. The overall raw power of this album is what makes it so good. The lyrics are fairly political, regarding 2 members played in The Varukers, which again honors the thrash and hardcore tradition.

Accept - Metal Heart

Genre: Heavy
Country: Germany
Year: 1985

1. Metal Heart
2. Midnight Mover
3. Up To The Limit
4. Wrong Is Right
5. Screaming For A Love-Bite
6. Too High To Get It Right
7. Dogs On Leads
8. Teach Us To Survive
9. Living For Tonite
10. Bound To Fail

6th album by Accept. The band continued in the same vein as its predecessors only less vicious and more commercial sounding. Most of the songs on here are instant classics, memorable and well-penned. The production is polished though helps date the music, the riffs are simplistic but catchy and the choruses and hooks are skillfully executed.

Omen - Warning Of Danger

Genre: Heavy/Power
Country: U.S.A.
Year: 1985

1. Warning Of Danger
2. March On
3. Ruby Eyes (Of The Serpent)
4. Don't Fear The Night
5. V.B.P
6. Premonition
7. Termination
8. Make Me Your King
9. Red Horizon
10. Hell's Gates

2nd album by Omen. Overall, the album is the same quality as their debut 'Battle Cry'. While the production is without a doubt dated, the music is great all the same, melodic intros, aggressive riffs and over-the-top vocals. Each track is a thundering hymn with a soaring chorus.

Amebix - Arise!

Genre: Heavy/Punk/Crust

2. Axeman
3. Fear Of God
4. Largactyl
5. Drink And Be Merry
6. Spoils Of Victory
7. Arise!
8. Slave
9. The Darkest Hour

Debut album by the crust pioneers Amebix. This release is nihilistic as hell, crusty, thrashing and will assault you in ways only crust done right can. They were the first to merge anarcho-punk and heavy metal music in a creative and interesting way and are often cited as one of the key bands to trigger the crust/punk movement. A classic cult album!

4. Love Is A Game
5. Get Away
6. Fight For Freedom
7. School's Out (Alice Cooper cover)
8. Friends Of Mine
9. Here I Stand

2nd album by Grave Digger. It's just as heavy as their debut album, with much less fury and attitude to both the lyrics and the music, no more no less.

4. Evil Invaders
5. Iron Hammer
6. Instant Death

8. Speed Merchants
9. Tortured Skull
10. Thrashdance

2nd album by Razor, that found them more improved in all levels compared to their debut album. Still maintaining the traditional/speed metal feel of their debut they added a lot more thrash on this album.  There's more riffs, the songs are a bit longer, the lyrics are better and overall the songs are a lot better than before.

Attack - Return Of The Evil

Genre: Heavy/Power
Country: Germany
Year: 1985

1. Warriors In Pain
2. No Mercy
3. Dirty Mary
4. Hateful And Damned
5. Indian Lady
6. Mystery Night
7. The End
8. Missing You
9. Hard Times

2nd album by Attack. The hard rock elements found in their debut, are less here. The Iron Maiden influences are more obvious, but that didn't stop the band's unique identity. Lyrics about war and fantasy tales combined with their power/speed tendencies, created a true, majestic atmosphere and gave signs about what was going to come in their future releases.

W.A.S.P. - The Last Command

Genre: Heavy
Country: U.S.A.
Year: 1985

1. Wild Child
2. Ballcrusher
3. Fistful Of Diamonds
4. Jack Action
5. Widowmaker
6. Blind In Texas
7. Cries In the Night
8. The Last Command
9. Running Wild In The Streets
10. Sex Drive

2nd album by W.A.S.P.. It was a middle-finger salute to the newly formed PMRC, a political group who were targeting offensive artists, including W.A.S.P. With a more focused songwriting approach, the band has created a worthy successor to the debut. Blackie Lawless still displays that raspy voice, that has become a trademark and his bass playing is steady. Same goes for guitarists Chris Holmes and Randy Piper.

Possessed - Seven Churches

Genre: Thrash
Country: U.S.A.
Year: 1985

1. The Exorcist
2. Pentagram
3. Burning In Hell
4. Evil Warriors
5. Seven Churches
6. Satan's Curse
7. Holy Hell
8. Twisted Minds
9. Fallen Angel
10. Death Metal

With their debut Possessed essentially created the base for the most extreme subgenre in metal, death metal. Even when compared to releases from Exodus and Slayer in the same year, Seven Churches is brutal and extreme beyond belief. The album features the heaviest thrash metal combined with proto-death metal vocals and a production so raw that it surely doesn't appeal to everybody.

Destruction - Infernal Overkill

Genre: Thrash
Country: Germany
Year: 1985

1. Invincible Force
2. Death Trap
3. The Ritual
4. Tormentor
5. Bestial Invasion
6. Thrash Attack
7. Antichrist
8. Black Death

Debut album by Destruction. Compositionally and performance wise, Infernal Overkill was a huge step up from the earlier ‘Sentence of Death’ EP. The group is unbelievably strong and plays very compact, even if the production doesn’t help. There are many thrash classic songs in here and the whole album was truly influential for many future bands.

Atomkraft - Future Warriors

Genre: NWOBHM
Country: England

1. Future Warriors
2. Starchild
3. Dead Man’s Hands
4. Total Metal
5. Pour The Metal In
6. Death Valley
7. This Planet’s Burning
8. Warzone
9. Burn In Hell
10. Heat And Pain

Debut album by Atomkraft, a band that usually is ''accused'' for its similarity to Venom. This album holds up fairly well, demonstrating high quality of NWOBHM. Their lyrics don't dabble in the occult so much as science fiction or observations on our world.

Liege Lord - Freedom's Rise

Genre: Power/Speed
Country: U.S.A.
Year: 1985

1. Prodigy
2. Wielding Iron Fists
3. Darktale
4. Amnesty
5. Rage of Angels
6. Vials of Wrath
7. Warriors Farewell
8. For the King
9. Legionnaire

Debut album by Liege Lord. It's a big slab of solid dark power metal with solid songwriting, distinct vocals and great musicianship. They are certainly a band with plenty of medieval metal majesty in their blood, their sound coming across like Iron Maiden being filtered through the quirky song logic of Cirith Ungol or Manilla Road.

Bathory - The Return ...

Genre: Black/Thrash
Country: Sweden
Year: 1985

1. Revelation Of Doom
2. Total Destruction
3. Born For Burning
4. The Wind Of Mayhem
5. Bestial Lust
6. Possessed
7. The Rite Of Darkness
8. Reap Of Evil
9. Son Of The Damned
10. Sadist (Tormentor)
11. The Return Of The Darkness And Evil

2nd album by Bathory. The riffs are in pure death/black metal style with the inevitable influences from thrash metal and Hellhammer. The vocals are blacker here, so more screamed even if they’re not excessive, keeping that Cronos touch. There are still a few moments of rock and roll to be found, but not as much as on the debut.

Helloween - Walls Of Jericho

Genre: Speed
Country: Germany
Year: 1985

1. Walls Of Jericho
2. Ride The Sky
3. Reptile
4. Guardians
5. Phantoms Of Death
6. Metal Invaders
7. Gorgar
8. Heavy Metal (Is The Law)
9. How Many Tears

Debut album by Helloween. Clearly inspired by Iron Maiden but willing to turn all the knobs harder, the guitar work is fast, energetic, accurate and melodic. The solo breaks, with Hansen and Michael Weikath duelling melodically at high speed, are rarely less than breathtaking and the band just gallops through the tracks with evident enthusiasm, a showcase of controlled velocity.

Slayer - Hell Awaits

Genre: Thrash
Country: U.S.A.
Year: 1985

1. Hell Awaits
2. Kill Again
3. At Dawn They Sleep
4. Praise Of Death
5. Necrophiliac
6. Crypts Of Eternity
7. Hardening Of The Arteries

2nd album by Slayer. It is again a dark, foreboding effort, but it manages to incorporate at least some of the energy of 'Show No Mercy' with more ambitious song structures. Musically there are no big differences, and for the most part the material is basically fine. The production lacks some dynamics again, but the quality is pretty sufficient anyway. It is a definite improvement over the preceding mini album and a sign of even better things to come.

3. Marriage
4. Yes Ma'am
5. Soup Kitchen
6. Mad Man
7. Stupid, Stupid War
8. Counter Attack
9. Couch Slouch
10. God Is Broke
11. Karma
12. Nursing Home Blues
13. I Don't Need Society
14. Give My Taxes Back
15. The Explorer

19. Argument Then War 20. Evil Minds 21. Slit My Wrist
22. Busted Again 23. Equal People 24. On My Way Home 25. Bail Out

2nd album by D.R.I.. This album shows quite a bit of growth from their debut, even though it features reworked versions of many of the songs from the Dirty Rotten LP. The riffs are memorable punk phrasings played at lightning speed, with a slightly dark, metal flavored tone about them. Generally the songs are nonlinear, frequently alternating between fast and unmoshibly slow phases, and then ending abruptly.
