Now as the bruise Blooming in the sky Scrapes away the bright Singing veins Stars come alive Witnesses on high Secret ways Hidden in the light Open now to my sight Burn The blooded runes Carved into the stone I feel their power in my bones Earth-bound spirits watch Clamor to be shown Above the maggot ridden snow Sign of watching moon The night is her throne I can hear her call me home Seething, cosmic froth Boiling in the grove Static bearing up my soul My cloak, the sky Soar through the night Reaving the unknown Becoming god Now I’m your god Cattle Suffer
3.
See the dark spark blaze high Star-flood Come, run! Feed! Be Night-blood There is but one answer To this unchecked cancer March of ghouls How your dead scream to be fed! Horrors in the fog creep Bent limbs, black-toothed maw Rips warm skin Lock your door Quake, pray Your gods are useless No way you Make it through this March of ghouls One night of doom The sun Will rise on nothing And as that light tastes your death Even the rats won’t eat what’s left
4.
Swarm 04:58
I long to see the world in tatters Long to crack the arc Trapped inside my flesh I wait to see the day this is no more I took the nectar Scented the coming storm She birthed the secret The hint of something more I need to see them To know what they are for I hear the wings beat Inside HUNGER GNAWS Spare me your wrong and your right You’re all to blame Still you can look me in the eye And plead your case? I stood in the goddess’s sight Absent in faith And listened to drones in the sky To the music they made I watched and I witnessed the might Of the unnumbered waves As they fell like a rain of scythes To reap and to waste I still see their feast in my mind Their hunger, the pain No truth but the jaws of the hive And burning rage I eat my skin Reject this form Swallowed by my hate My flesh, their writhing gate
5.
Worm 05:21
He’s creeping through your town Some say he comes from underground His skin is lily white A devil’s in his eyes Oh, you’ve said your prayers? But the Worm does not care In death your flesh has value Your blood and clever get And all those little pieces Energy, reagents I have no use for riches But for to buy his time That with his cursed blade he’ll Carve away what is mine Every lie is surely sacred Every soul is bright In my circle I craft the end of light From light With his dagger The worm brought this meaning to your hide
6.
Spider 04:53
Stories of cattle-killers Preying on the countryside Pulled band of keen crusaders From city-bright Spurred on by pleasing peasants, Promise of gold And love of reputation To forest old Torchlight on gossamer walls Dancing on polished steel The lust for battle flagging Slowly to nervous heel This shadow swallows reason The cavern gives to black Darkness is absolute, There is no turning back Down where no man should dwell Where death is dressed in silk: The eyes are beyond counting The sounds unspeakable In awe the fighters, frozen Unblinking fear The blades of bravest biting Into inhuman flesh Of skittering, unrelenting Numbers in this foul endless nest I, Lore-Keeper Note, as they die, Their silken husks As empty as their useless pride
7.
Awash in starlight, the brooding trees Force of nature, demon speed Shadow wraps my beating heart My senses ache to feed I am swept up by the creeping fog Which brings their scent to me Torchlight moves down winding path, A host of seventeen In silence I will stalk the pack Tonight they’ll be a feast Out here in the night the killers creep The thrill of the hunt Taking life with flashing teeth The thrill of the hunt All you are is living meat Bag of blood Dead in your bed or on your feet The thrill of the hunt Prone and hamstrung, one yet awaits Bleeding and dragged, a cage holds his fate Where prayers lie rotting at the gate

about

The product of a year and a half’s work, The Storyteller (Volume 1) is a collection of musical tales which in turn build upon narratives established in previous releases, illustrate the horrors of the damned and occasionally pay homage to the page-masters dear to the Blackstaff’s shriveled heart.

I, Lore-Keeper, leave you with this message:
Prepare to be crushed.

Special Thanks Text Wall

To all the people who have listened to Blackstaff in its various stages and supported it with their headbangs and also told me when I was full of shit:

Todd Purnick, who spent countless hours with me to get this right; my great friend and brother Mat, way out in small town Montana; my good buddy and bandmate to be, Shevin Mycon (@mycondoom); Dylan Benedict, top notch gear builder and friend (@benedict_amplification @in_cascades); Matt Stultz, heavy metal sludge fiend and one of my oldest friends; Justin Castilla, the bass slangin festy dad and my yearly Cascadian Midsummer roommate; my dude and fellow Benedict Amplification congregant Kurt Uy (@lyranband); Brandon Waldbauer; Queeny (of the Southern Hemisphere) and Dremlord Tash; Chance the Florida Cat-Man Tattooist (@scab_vendor); Jazzy the Great (@formlessflesh); Blake Carrera (@aiwassband); Steve Reis, one of the coolest fuckin guys in the doom and gear communities, and a big catalyst for Blackstaff as it is now (@doesitdoom and @woodriteguitars); John Frank JC (Your Mama) who is brutal as fuck; Ben Reames (@3rdeyetattoo) for all of the jams and tattoos and letting me blast my shit for an hour at a time in the shop; Scott Mikey (BLAZER! Forced to Watch); Kevin Brighton (@blackenedamericana and Congregation Gear Demos), who helped me make so many killer connections and friends in the music community; my pal Destro XII, LONG MAY HE LIVE (don’t ever go down the saw belt dick-first!), Keepers of the Low End for all their work in the heavy music community.

Steve Cleary, who always made me guess the bands on the radio when I was a kid.

Joaquin Salazar, who shaped my musical sensibilities in a huge way throughout the years.

Sharon Bonham, repping my stuff to all of her friends in Minnesota.

My wife, Kristen, who loves Cloak of Stars so much that she calls it the Wife Song (and thinks nothing will ever be as good as Craterhoof was on the first EP)
(and thinks that I should never release weak-ass little fry screams)

The riffs and musical moves of Javi Galvez (Horn of the Rhino, Altarage, Funeral Sun) which inspire me always.

And every one of you that follows and shares my music. You all make this thing happen, and are the reason I am always pushing myself to do better.

Blackstaff is made with Benedict Amplification, Woodrite Guitars, Black Harbor Sound strings and the incredible Does It Doom ‘Hypercoven,’ which has and will always inspire the most excellent riffs. Every one of these builders deserves your support both as makers of gear and as people.
