With Against, Agyt shifts from the spectral haze of previous works into something denser, heavier—where intimacy catalyzes a nostalgia for a future that refuses to unfold. A butterfly effect in reverse, where fragile details swell into towering storms, a star collapsing in on itself within the utopias of an apartment room. It is almost impossible not to be overwhelmed by the love radiating from the album—by its confrontation with our inability to destroy the world in order to build new ones. Mastered by the legendary Rashad Becker, Against trades lo-fi murmur for a sharper, more confrontational presence. Tom Devianne works in extremes—saturation and silence, compression and release—drawing from organ music’s harmonic density and noise’s obliterating textures to construct something lyrical yet unrelenting. The seven tracks pull the listener into a state of emotional vertigo, where melody is buried beneath shifting pressures of sound, and where every collapse holds the trace of something yet to emerge. This is a record to be played loud—felt as much as heard. The kind of work that alters the air and acts like a mirror—one you cannot look away from. As challenging as the unrelenting stare of the woman on its cover.
