El Niño continúa fortaleciéndose y podría generar importantes impactos sobre la salud pública en las Américas durante los próximos meses, según el primer Reporte de Situación regional de la OPS sobre el fenómeno. La Administración Nacional Oceánica y Atmosférica de Estados Unidos (NOAA) estima una probabilidad superior al 90% de que el evento alcance una intensidad “muy fuerte” entre finales de 2026 e inicios de 2027. La OPS señala que los efectos ya se están observando en distintas partes de la región. Varios países enfrentan sequías, inseguridad alimentaria, incendios forestales e inundaciones en el contexto del fortalecimiento de El Niño, aunque no todos estos eventos han sido atribuidos directamente al fenómeno. Actualmente, ocho países o territorios han emitido declaratorias oficiales de emergencia o alerta relacionadas con amenazas vinculadas al fenómeno. Durante episodios anteriores de #ElNiño, la región también enfrentó emergencias sanitarias importantes, entre ellas la reemergencia del cólera en la década de 1990, la epidemia de Zika y chikunguña en 2015-2016 y los niveles récord de transmisión de dengue en 2023 y 2024. 🔗 Más información: https://lnkd.in/eJRqCvuJ

Today, it was a pleasure to welcome the 2026 cohort of physician fellows from the National Hispanic Health Foundation to the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) headquarters in Washington, D.C. The visit provided an opportunity to engage with emerging healthcare leaders and share PAHO’s work across the Americas, including our priorities in strengthening health systems, advancing primary health care, promoting health workforce development, and expanding equitable access to health services. These topics were specifically highlighted as areas of interest for the fellows during their visit. Tuve el honor de participar en la inauguración del XLVIII Congreso Nacional de la Academia Nacional de Medicina de México 🇲🇽, un espacio que reúne a líderes académicos, científicos, profesionales de la salud, estudiantes y responsables de políticas públicas para reflexionar sobre los desafíos y oportunidades que enfrenta la salud en nuestro tiempo. Quiero reconocer la destacada labor de la Academia Nacional de Medicina de México, presidida por el Dr. Raúl Carrillo Esper, así como el compromiso del Dr. David Kershenobich, Secretario de Salud de México, y de toda la comunidad científica y sanitaria del país. La Academia ha realizado una contribución histórica al desarrollo de la medicina, la formación de profesionales y la generación de conocimiento al servicio de la salud en México y en las Américas. El tema de este Congreso, “Actualidades en Medicina, Enfermería, Ciencia y Tecnología”, refleja una realidad cada vez más evidente: ningún sector ni disciplina puede responder por sí solo a los complejos desafíos de salud actuales y futuros. Vivimos una etapa de extraordinarios avances científicos y tecnológicos. La inteligencia artificial, la ciencia de datos, la medicina de precisión, las nuevas herramientas diagnósticas y las terapias innovadoras están ampliando nuestras posibilidades para prevenir enfermedades, mejorar la calidad de la atención y fortalecer la toma de decisiones basada en evidencia. Sin embargo, el verdadero valor de estos avances radica en su capacidad para beneficiar a todas las personas, especialmente a aquellas que enfrentan mayores barreras de acceso a la salud. La innovación debe tener un propósito humano: contribuir a la reducción de las inequidades, fortalecer la atención primaria de salud y apoyar la construcción de sistemas de salud más integrados, resilientes, resolutivos y centrados en las personas. Para lograrlo, es esencial que el desarrollo tecnológico vaya acompañado de rigor científico, responsabilidad ética y políticas públicas que permitan una distribución equitativa de sus beneficios. También destaqué el papel fundamental de las academias e instituciones formadoras en la generación de evidencia, la formación de recursos humanos en salud y la articulación entre investigación, práctica clínica y políticas públicas. Asimismo, resalté la importancia de la Iniciativa de Eliminación de Enfermedades de la OPS, que busca eliminar más de 30 enfermedades transmisibles y condiciones relacionadas para 2030. Esta iniciativa demuestra que es posible transformar el conocimiento en acción cuando alineamos capacidades, recursos y voluntades en torno a objetivos comunes. Desde la OPS Pan American Health Organization, reafirmamos nuestro compromiso de seguir trabajando junto al Gobierno de México, la Academia Nacional de Medicina y todos los actores nacionales para acelerar el progreso hacia sistemas de salud más equitativos, resilientes y basados en la atención primaria de salud.

Health workers dedicate their lives to caring for others. Yet violence against them remains a growing challenge across the Americas. Violence in health settings can harm the physical and mental well-being of health workers, contribute to burnout and staff shortages, and affect the quality and continuity of care. Our new factsheet, "Preventing violence against health workers in the Region of the Americas", highlights the scope of the problem, its impact on health systems, and evidence-based actions to prevent and respond to violence. Today, I met with Ambassadors and Permanent Representatives to the Organization of American States to provide an overview of the upcoming 63rd Directing Council (28 September-1 October 2026), 78th Session of the Regional Committee for the Americas (1-2 October 2026) and the 179th Session of the Executive Committee (2 October 2026). These important governance meetings will bring together Member States to review progress and take decisions on key public health priorities for the Region 🌎. Among the topics to be considered are: • Health emergency and risk management for health security • Antimicrobial resistance • Prevention and control of arboviral diseases • Food safety • PAHO's Regional Revolving Funds Member States will also receive progress reports on important regional initiatives, including: • PAHO's Disease Elimination Initiative • One Health • The Plan of Action for Cervical Cancer Prevention and Control 2018-2030 • The application of data science, artificial intelligence, and other emerging technologies in public health In addition, briefing sessions during the Directing Council will address accelerating action in primary health care, advancing the Pan-American Highway for Digital Health, and catalytic investments to accelerate disease elimination in the Americas. 🤲🏼 Building stronger evaluation systems starts with building people’s capacity to use evidence. The Pan American Health Organization was proud to participate in #EVALAC2026 for the first time, contributing to the training of more than 150 public officials from 24 countries across Latin America and the Caribbean through sessions on monitoring and evaluation foundations and on the use of foresight to strengthen evaluation and decision-making. We thank the Office of Evaluation and Oversight (OVE), CLEAR LAC, and all partners for creating a valuable space for learning, collaboration, and exchange across the region. EVALAC 2026 se inauguró hoy en Ciudad de México con la firma de un convenio de colaboración entre el INEGI y la Secretaría de Hacienda y Crédito Público. Esta es la cuarta edición de EVALAC y la más numerosa hasta ahora: 156 funcionarios públicos de 24 países comienzan una semana de formación en monitoreo y evaluación. El convenio, suscrito durante la ceremonia inaugural, representa un paso firme hacia la institucionalización del nuevo sistema integrado de evaluación de México. Lo firmaron Claudia Maldonado y Gabriela Pérez Yarahuán por el National Institute of Statistics and Geography of Mexico (INEGI), y Juan Armando Rodríguez y Rodolfo Hernández Espinosa por la Unidad de Política y Estrategia para Resultados de la Secretaría de Hacienda y Crédito Público. #EVALAC2026 parte de una premisa: todos los sistemas de evaluación requieren tres capacidades: realizar evaluaciones, gestionarlas y utilizarlas para mejorar los resultados de las políticas e intervenciones públicas. El programa trabaja las tres en tres trayectorias, según la función que cada participante desempeña en su institución. 🌎 From innovation to routine patient benefit: who is responsible for closing the gap? We are pleased to announce Dr. Jarbas Barbosa da Silva Jr, Director of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO/WHO), as a speaker at our upcoming high-level IPM event during United Nations General Assembly High-Level Week in New York. 📅 24 September 2026 | 9:00–13:00 📍 Italian Cultural Institute, New York Under the theme “Bringing Innovation into Healthcare Systems: From Promising Science and AI to Routine Patient Benefit,” the meeting will examine what it takes to move health innovation beyond research projects and pilots and into sustainable, equitable care. Dr. Barbosa brings extensive experience across public health, health systems, epidemiology, regulation, health surveillance and international health governance. As Director of PAHO, and previously in senior leadership roles within Brazil’s Ministry of Health and ANVISA, he has worked at the intersection of innovation, regulation, health-system capacity and equitable access. His perspective will be particularly relevant to our opening discussion: “Start with the Need, Not the Algorithm: What Should Health Systems Innovate For?” The session will explore how governments and health systems can define genuine priorities, involve patients and clinicians in shaping innovation, and ensure that AI, data and new technologies respond to real health needs and deliver measurable public value.
