I really wanted a vent hood and the original microwave location would have gotten in the way of that, but I also wanted the microwave to be easy to get to and not feel like I was having to work around doors just to use it. I thought about one of those island microwaves but we decided it wouldn't be the best use of space for our island. We talked about putting it in the pantry, but that would've required us to remodel the pantry as well, which wasn't on our 2024 to-do list. (It might be a 2025 project... we'll see) We also got rid of the countertop where our toaster oven sat so I needed an accessible space for that small appliance as well. Having them both right here, with the doors that can be completely moved out of the way has been amazing. I still have immediate accessibility and I don't have to work around doors sticking out into the kitchen. I can leave them open if I want to, but I love being able to close them and minimize the visual clutter.
