I scanned this fabulous Phrenology Head from a newspaper years and years ago when I got my first scanner which is probably considered to be an antique by now. You can see the text bleeding through from the reverse side of the newsprint. It's the best one I've ever seen and I always look for them. I sold this porcelain head recently.

This phrenology chart showing the areas of the brain is a plate from an anatomy book. I believe it to be from the early years of the 20th century. I had a request from a television producer for some of our phrenology images so I thought I should post them here as well.

phrenology is a pseudoscience primarily focused on measurements of the human skull, based on the concept that the brain is the organ of the mind, and that certain brain areas have localized, specific functions or modules.

In 1796, a German physician named Franz Gall introduced a groundbreaking discovery known as Phrenology. The concept reached the United States through Dr. Charles Caldwell of Kentucky, a student of Gall, who lectured and wrote extensively on the subject. Though initially met with skepticism, Phrenology gained momentum when Dr. Spurzheim began lecturing on this new science in Boston.
