La primera ley establece que cada objeto permanece en reposo o en movimiento uniforme en línea recta a menos que se vea obligado a cambiar su estado por la acción de una fuerza externa. Esto normalmente se toma como la definición de inercia. El punto clave aquí es que si no hay una fuerza neta que actúa sobre un objeto (si todas las fuerzas externas se cancelan entre sí), entonces el objeto mantiene una velocidad constante.
