VA - Rare Afro & Caribbean Funk Vol. 1 + Vol. 2 [2007] (2 x CDs)

FUNK

VA - Rare Afro & Caribbean Funk Vol. 1 + Vol. 2 [2007] (2 x CDs)

VA - Rare Afro & Caribbean Funk Vol. 1 [2007] - One of the hippest collections of global grooves we've ever heard -- a side each of rare African and Caribbean tunes -- both of which sound a fair different than work we've had on other compilations! The African tunes break nicely from the standard Fela groove -- and stretch out with sometimes-complicated rhythms that are filled with jazzy changes, snapping beats, and soulful vocals that have a pretty freewheeling sound. The Caribbean side starts with grooves somewhere in the territory of Beginning Of The End, but quickly takes off into even headier territory -- a great blend of island rhythms and much trippier jamming! Afro titles include "We Gonna Make It" by Idowu Funkyman Fakeye, "Munia" by Sumo, "Diwela" by Jerry Malekani, and "Enjoy Your Life" by Oby Onyihoa -- and Carribean tunes include "Independent Bahamas" by Biosis Now, "Soul Martinique" by Black Machines, "The Higher Bidder" by Gordon Henderson, and "Priere Au Soleil" by Marcel Louis Joseph.  [Dusty Groove, Inc.]

VA - Rare Afro & Caribbean Funk Vol. 2 [2007] - A second mighty batch of rare work from points south -- the kind of tunes we'd never have tracked down on our own, making us even more grateful for a set like this! As before, the music's a blend of obscure African tunes and other bits picked from the Caribbean -- the latter of which represents a strongly untapped source of funk from the 70s, finally getting its due in recent years! There's a strong influence on most numbers from American funky 45s -- heavy drums, riffing guitars, and blasting horns -- but all put together with a slightly different approach, especially on the bottom -- which makes for more than enough interesting grooves throughout the set. Titles include "Dig It Babe" by Jojo L'Explosif, "Rising" by WJC & Roots Trunks & Branches, "Dou Dagbe We" by Black Santiago, "Almamy" by Super Tentemba Jazz, "Rhythm On Rhythm" by Sookie, "Joe" by Marius, "Play Up Play Up" by Roland Louis Orchestra, "Let's Stay Up Vickings" by Les Vickings, and "Wish Upon Love" by Cool Creation.  [Dusty Groove, Inc.]

VA - African Scream Contest [2008] + VA - African Scream Contest 2 [2018] (2 x CDs)

AFRICAN SOUL

VA - African Scream Contest [2008] + VA - African Scream Contest 2 [2018] (2 x CDs)

African Scream Contest - The subtitle here, intriguing as it is, isn't completely accurate, since the emphasis is actually more on soul and funk than raw garage rock and psychedelia. Indeed, there's a strongJames Brown fixation for many artists here, and Roger Damawuzen should have won an award (or a lawsuit) for his uncanny imitation of the Godfather of Soul. It does get a little wild at times, as with "Congolaise Benin Ye" from Le Super Borgou de Parakou, but one thing that never falters here is the groove. Once a band latches onto it, they don't let go, keeping it rock-solid, but with plenty of polyrhythms happening as part of it, giving it a wonderful, flexible feeling. There's no a bad cut here, and it's obvious that this is the result of a labor of love -- the result of two-and-a-half years work and nine trips to the countries. It may be the Francophone influence that steers the musicians away from the more obvious English and American rock sounds, although you can definitely hear the Afro-Latin percussion of Santana in the mix (and the fiery guitar work, too, at times). But whatever the artists are doing, they thankfully never try to ditch their Afro roots -- which, of course, are the bedrock of soul and rock. This all takes it in another, fabulous direction. In many ways it proved to be a bit of a dead end historically, but the music that came out of it is nothing less than sublime. And keep the player going after the last track for the hidden bonus. It's worthwhile. (AllMusic review by Chris Nickson)

African Scream Contest, Vol. 2 - The first African Scream Contest compilation, an electrifying set of obscure soul and funk tracks recorded in Benin and Togo during the '70s, originally appeared in 2008, and has remained one of the most popular releases on the Analog Africa label. Its sequel finally arrived a decade later, after musician Lokonon André managed to track down all the artists on cratedigger Samy Ben Redjeb's wish list and license their songs, and was well worth the wait. Like the first volume, this one focuses on heavy funk grooves laid down by supremely disciplined musicians, with styles ranging from the slightly jazzy pop of Ignace de Souza & the Melody Aces' "Asaw Fofor" to hypnotic shakers with call-and-response vocals, such as "Nounignon Ma Klon Midji" by Antoine Dougbé. The album lives up to its title on a few occasions, such as Picoby Band d'Abomey's "Mé Adomina," which is punctuated by piercing howls, particularly at its joyous finale. Even when it isn't quite as abrasive, the album's energy level never lets up. Stanislas Tohon's "Dja Dja Dja" and the more percussive, keyboard-driven Cornaire Salifou Michel's "Gangnidodo" incorporate more of a Latin influence, particularly in the horn arrangements. Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou's giddy "Moulon Devia" is a sprightly disco shuffle, and one of the most undeniably fun tracks here. Of course, it's impossible to deny the influence James Brown had on the music of this era, and Super Borgou de Parakou's "Baba l'Oke Ba'Wagbe" is filled with ecstatic wails that could be mistaken for samples of Brown himself (if sampling were common back in the '70s, that is). A few songs cool down a bit, such as the reggae-like sway of Elias Akadiri's "L'Enfance" or the wavy shimmer of Gnonnas Pedro's "How Much Love Naturally Cost." The extensively detailed liner notes feature interviews with the musicians as well as plenty of gorgeous photos, but the music itself is the main attraction, and it all sounds uniformly incredible. (AllMusic review by Paul Simpson)

WILLIAM ONYEABOR

William Onyeabor - William Onyeabor [2014] (9 x CDs)

William Ezechukwu Onyeabor, was born outside Enugu, a small, rural town in Eastern Nigeria (26 March 1946 - 16 January 2017).  HEwas a Nigerian funk musician and businessman. His music was widely heard in Nigeria in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Despite his success, he remained an enigmatic, private, and reclusive figure.

William Onyeabor was born outside Enugu, a small, rural town in Eastern Nigeria, he created his own genre of African electronic funk in the late 70s and early 80s, making music completely unique for his time. Today, he is reaching cult status among a growing list of admirers, including everyone from Damon Albarn and Hot Chip to Carl Craig and Madlib, with some likening him to the Kraftwerk of West Africa, or a precursor to LCD Soundsystem.

Onyeabor's songs are often heavily rhythmic and synthesized, occasionally epic in scope, with lyrics decrying war. Onyeabor himself and female backing singers provided vocals. In the 2010s, some of his songs appeared on various compilations, most frequently his biggest hit, "Better Change Your Mind", which appeared on Africa 100, World Psychedelic Classics 3: Love's a Real Thing – The Funky Fuzzy Sounds of West Africa on Luaka Bop, and Nigeria 70: The Definitive Story of 1970's Funky Lagos on Strut Records.

DESERT BLUES

VA - Desert Blues 1+2+3 [1995, 2002, 2008] (6 x CD's)

Brilliant series of three disks. The birth of the blues can be heard here.

It is 24 years since the label Network began recording artists from the Sahara, Sahel and neighboring countries. The journey to the serene side of African music has since been awarded international prizes, has been in the charts for months and is regarded as the "best-selling compilation of African music of all time" (fRoots). Many stars from the countries around the Sahara have allowed themselves to be inspired by the Desert Blues.

VA - Desert Blues 1 [1995] Ambiances du Sahara
This is a great 2 CD set to give you a taste of known and the unknown, the good and the merely interesting. Quite a variety and the two CDs are quite different in mood, so you can choose bouncy or laid back. There are a couple of artists represented twice. African singers who are still unknown and deserve some airtime. We've picked up a couple of new unknowns from this album and are now trying to track them down for more of their enchanting sounds. Makes a good present for friends who are intrigued by the idea of "African music" but don't know where to start.  I was in Egypt and thought I had discovered a CD which wasn't available normally. So I was surprised to see it's listed here. I've listened to this album a thousand times and can sing N'Dour's "Sama Guent Gun" almost by heart (though I don't understand what it means). You're depriving yourself of a true musical wonder if you pass up this one. (Amazon)

VA - Desert Blues 2 [2002] Reves D'oasis
I have thousands of albums, but I am not sure I have anything better than this. It's astoundingly good. It's also very hard to pick out the best tracks - there's no slack whatsoever. At a push I might just take 'Hakmet Lakdar' by Hasna El Belcharia to my desert island if I could only take one with me. The first listen easily exceeded my expectations, and anybody interested in African blues from around the edge of the Sahara region is guaranteed, in my view, not to be disappointed. The best-known artist is Djelimady Tounkara, but the vast majority were unknown to me and as soon as you listen to them make you want to find the original albums. There is a large variety to the blues on offer and I can but totally recommended it. Found the influences seemed to draw upon so many rock/pop/jazz/blues stuff I thought I had heard elsewhere, but soon I then realised this is the origin of all that music anyway. Most contemporary music since the fifties has it's seed of origin in Africa, and much of it seems to be from Saharan Africa. (Amazon)

VA - Desert Blues 3 [2008] Entre dunes et savanes
For Desert Blues 3, the editorial team has evaluated all the new releases of recent years and is now presenting the creme of musicians from 10 countries and their highly emotional ballads: including, super-stars Khaled and Souad Massi from Algeria; Malouma "The Lady of the Blues" from Mauritania; the poignant voice of Dhafer Youssef from Tunisia; Gigi, the current queen of Ethiopian soul music; expressive music from Mali by Amadou and Marian, Ali Farka Toure, Oumo Sangare, Rokia Traore with the Kronos Quartet; "Fula Flute" from Guinea; Tuareg music from West Africa by the successful group Tinariwen. And all of this is complemented by several completely new discoveries and first releases. A musical dream journey to the voices and vibes of the oases, the savannas, the caravans, the endless seas of sand and Tuareg campfires. Long-format double CD. More than 2 hours playing time. This compilation is full of beautiful voice, melodies envoutantes or magic full of smells of Africa. (Amazon)

VA - Return Of The Tokoloshe Men! [2014] (6 x CDs)

SOUTH AFRICA

VA - Return Of The Tokoloshe Men! [2014] (6 x CDs)

"Return of the Tokoloshe Men!" is a six-CD compilation album that offers an immersive experience into the lively and energetic sound of South African township jive music from the 1950s and 1960s. The album was released in 2014 by the UK-based record label Strut and features a collection of classic tracks from some of South Africa's most iconic artists.

The term "tokoloshe" is derived from African folklore and refers to a creature that is said to bring bad luck or harm to people. The title of the album is a reference to the popularity of this type of music among young men in South Africa during the 1950s and 1960s. The music was often played at dance halls and social gatherings and was associated with a sense of rebellion and youthful exuberance.

The six discs in the compilation are filled with a diverse array of music, ranging from mbaqanga, jazz, and soul to rock 'n' roll and pop. The album features many notable artists. The songs are characterized by their infectious rhythms, catchy melodies, and exuberant vocal performances, which capture the essence of South African township jive music.

The liner notes for the album are extensive and provide a wealth of historical and cultural context for the music. They offer insights into the social and political climate of South Africa during the time when these songs were created and shed light on the cultural significance of township jive music. The notes also include archival photographs that offer a visual representation of the music and its cultural context.

"Return of the Tokoloshe Men!" is a highly regarded compilation album that provides a rich and immersive experience into the vibrant musical culture of South Africa during the mid-twentieth century. The album is a testament to the enduring appeal of township jive music, which continues to inspire musicians and listeners around the world to this day. (B)
