VA - The Collection: Disco, The Ultimate Disco Anthems [2017] (3 x CDs)

DISCO

VA - The Collection: Disco, The Ultimate Disco Anthems [2017] (3 x CDs)

This set is a 3CD UK compilation issued by Rhino Records as part of their “The Collection” series. With 54 tracks spanning funk, soul, and disco’s crossover peak, it’s a well-mastered, radio-friendly set that favors atmosphere and accessibility over deep crate-digging. The release is housed in a standard jewel case, with minimal liner notes and clean sequencing across all three discs.

CD1 opens with The Trammps’ “Disco Inferno”, followed by Chic’s “Good Times”, Hot Chocolate’s “You Sexy Thing”, and Chaka Khan’s “I’m Every Woman” a confident run of dancefloor staples. But it also dips into deeper grooves: Larry Graham’s “Sooner or Later”, Slave’s “Just A Touch Of Love”, and Patrice Rushen’s “Look Up” bring jazz-funk sophistication, while Ben E. King’s “Supernatural Thing, Pt. 1”, Aquarian Dream’s “Fantasy”, and Herbie Mann’s “Hi-Jack” add cosmic textures. The inclusion of Frankie Valli’s “December, 1963 (Oh What A Night)” adds a pop-soul crossover moment.

CD2 shifts toward vocal soul and rhythmic funk. KC & The Sunshine Band, Sister Sledge, and George Benson anchor the disc with polished grooves, while Mass Production, Stargard, and T-Connection offer deeper rhythmic cuts. Norma Jean Wright’s “Sorcerer”, Narada Michael Walden’s “I Shoulda Loved You”, and Bette Midler’s “My Knight in Black Leather” bring theatrical flair and emotional range.

CD3 closes with post-disco polish and electro-funk edge. Candi Staton’s “Young Hearts Run Free”, Patrice Rushen’s “Forget Me Nots”, and Rose Royce’s “Is It Love You’re After” set the tone. Dr. John, Eumir Deodato, and Donald Byrd add jazz-funk depth, while Trussel’s “Love Injection” and Phreek’s “Weekend” deliver club-ready grooves. The sequencing favors mood and flow, ending with Ben E. King’s “Supernatural Thing, Pt. 2”a subtle callback to CD1.

This set isn’t built for rarity hunters, but it’s a clean, cohesive overview of disco’s emotional and rhythmic breadth, ideal for genre newcomers and archivists seeking polished versions of key tracks. (B)

VA - Disco Anthems [2011] (3 x CDs)

DISCO

VA - Disco Anthems [2011] (3 x CDs)

"Disco Anthems" is a 3CD UK compilation issued in 2011, this compilation spans 60 tracks across three discs, each sequenced to evoke the arc of a night out, from early warm-up gliders to peak-hour anthems and late-night soul. It celebrates the golden era of disco with a collector-grade sweep of floor-fillers, crossover hits, and deep groove essentials. Released by Crimson Productions in partnership with Rhino Records, it’s a well-curated set that balances mainstream sparkle with crate-digger credibility.  Packaged under the “3/60” series banner, it’s housed in a gatefold-style cardboard sleeve, compact, affordable, and collector-friendly for those who favor physical media with a punch of pop history. The tracklist is rich with genre-defining cuts and a few pleasant surprises.

CD1 sets the tone with emotional clarity and rhythmic warmth. Candi Staton’s “Young Hearts Run Free” opens the set with resilience and melody, followed by Sister Sledge’s “We Are Family” and Chic’s “Everybody Dance”, anchoring the disc in classic disco unity. But it’s the deeper cuts, Phreek’s “Weekend”, Mass Production’s “Cosmic Lust”, and Luisa Fernandez’s “Lay Love On Me”, that add texture and crate-digger appeal. Laura Branigan’s “Gloria” and Narada Michael Walden’s “I Shoulda Loved Ya” bring in pop sophistication and jazz-funk finesse, while Silver Convention, Freddie James, and Voyage round out the disc with Euro-disco shimmer.

CD2 leans into groove and atmosphere. Trammps’ “Disco Inferno” and Rose Royce’s “Is It Love You’re After” kick things off with fire and sass. Then the mood shifts: Change’s “The Glow of Love”, Patrice Rushen’s “Forget Me Nots”, and Donald Byrd’s “Love Has Come Around” offer jazz-inflected depth. Chaka Khan’s “I Feel For You” and Steve Arrington’s “Feel So Real” bring synth-funk and vocal soul, while Montana, Herbie Mann, and Janice McClain add cosmic textures and underground polish. The sequencing here favors flow over hits, making it a DJ-friendly disc with emotional range.

CD3 dives into post-disco, electro-funk, and proto-house. Rufus & Chaka Khan’s “Ain’t Nobody” and Nu Shooz’s “I Can’t Wait” set a sleek, synth-driven tone. Africa Bambaataa’s “Planet Rock” and Zapp’s “More Bounce to the Ounce” inject streetwise edge and early hip-hop energy. The Detroit Spinners, Five Special, and Stacy Lattisaw offer polished soul, while Narada Michael Walden, Patrice Rushen, and Gene Farrow close the set with emotional ache and dancefloor swagger. It’s a disc for late-night heads and genre-blenders, where disco’s legacy morphs into something darker and more experimental.

Disco Anthems isn’t just a party set, it’s a well-sequenced archive of disco’s emotional and sonic evolution. With no bootlegs or filler, it’s a collector-grade compilation that rewards deep listening and repeat spins. (B)

K SPECIAL VA - K-tells 34, Pop Disco, 46 Original Hits, 46 Original Stars (2025 Remastered Edition) (2CD) (1976)

K SPECIAL

PLEASE THANK K for this wonderful compilation

VA - K-tells 34, Pop Disco, 46 Original Hits, 46 Original Stars (2025 Remastered Edition) (2CD) (1976)

K-tel, Ronco, and Arcade Records were all companies known for selling compilation albums and other products through various channels, including television advertising and direct mail.

K-tel, founded in 1962, is the original compilation company, selling over half a billion records worldwide. Ronco was known for promoting products like the Superstars music collection through television commercials and direct mail. Arcade Records was another company that focused on selling music through various channels.

Here's a more detailed look at each company:

K-tel:

K-tel's main focus was on producing and selling compilation albums, featuring popular music hits from various genres. They also expanded into selling other products like video games, toys, and kitchen appliances. K-tel is based in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, and has subsidiaries in the US and UK.

Ronco:

Ronco was known for its distinctive television commercials, often featuring unusual or outlandish products. One of their most famous products was the Superstars music collection, which included a box set of records and a matching pair of records.

Arcade Records:

Arcade Records was another company that focused on selling music through direct mail and other channels. They offered a wide variety of albums, often featuring compilation albums or unique music selections.

Like many who grew up in the 70's and 80's, K-tel, Ronco and Arcade compilation albums were very much a staple in my record collection. 20 hit tracks for a little more than the cost of a couple of singles, they always seemed like great value for a little pocket money. Many hit the number 1 spot in the UK charts, often completely outselling major name artists.

For instance: 20 Dynamic Hits is a compilation album released on vinyl by K-tel in 1972. It reached number 1 in the UK and was the first album put together specifically for telemarketing in that country. At a time when various artists' compilations were eligible for inclusion on the UK's Official Album Chart, this was the biggest selling album of 1972.

The company built the business of releasing compilation albums that combined material from a number of popular artists onto a single theme album using the tag line "20 Original Hits! 20 Original Stars!". The company negotiated directly with artists and labels for the rights to reproduce their original recordings, in the process also securing a long-term asset through adding those recordings to their catalogue.

Canadian Philip Kives began K-tel in the 1960's, and his biggest selling product was the Miracle Brush, which sold 28 million in the late 1960's. In 1966, K-tel released its first compilation album, 25 Country Hits. It quickly sold out and prompted the follow-up, 25 Polka Greats. This one sold 1.5 million copies in the United States alone. The hits kept coming and included the Super Hits series, the Dynamic Hits series and the Number One Hits series. K-tel assembled the greatest hits from the latest, greatest artists in one single package. There were even thematic compilations like Goofy Greats, Super Bad, Super Bad Is Back, Souled Out, Summer Cruisin’ and a 1950's look-back, Rock ’n’ Roll Show. K-tel grew exponentially in the 1970's and by the early 1980's, the company had sold more than half a billion albums worldwide.

These albums for me, as I'm sure for others, hold very dear memories, and for many were the very first albums they ever bought.

I decided to compile many of these albums from scratch using the very latest and highest quality CD digital remasters with many tracks mastered from the original master tapes (rather than ripping from the original vinyl), as these classic compilation albums from K-tel, Ronco, Arcade, etc. were sadly badly mastered with poor sound quality along with many tracks being severely edited due to vinyl time constraints in order to squeeze on as many tracks per side as possible.

I've made absolutely sure through exhaustive and extensive research to include all the original complete 7" 45 single versions (which were originally used on the albums, but cut short), from my own extensive collection, so as to make these compilations completely authentic and true to the originals, along with the best sounding audio quality possible. I've also spent a considerable amount of time fine tuning, editing and adjusting the volume levels to be consistent across each album.

What makes these albums most interesting is that each one contains, even to this day, a few extremely rare, obscure and hard to find tracks. Not one of these compilation albums has ever been officially released on CD.

Hope they bring back a lot of happy memories.

Pop Disco: 46 Original Hits - 46 Original Stars (K-tel TN 1101 - TN 1121 - TN 1201 - TG 153 NLD) (2025 Remastered Edition) (2CD) (1976)

K-tells part 34 of this ongoing series.

Pop Music, Disco Mania, Pop Parade and Disco Express were all released by K-tel in the Netherlands in 1975/1976.

The covers all featured a similar colour scheme using a set of bright primary colours; red, yellow and blue, giving them a very consistent look, making them quite different and distinctive from other K-tel releases.

For this 2025 remaster, I have selected the 46 very best English language tracks from all four releases for a special 2CD set.

CD1 comprises 23 of the very best song selections with a running time of 77:12 CD length.

CD2 comprises 23 of the very best song selections with a running time of 79:03 CD length.

All 33 previous posts of the K-tells series can be found here:

VA - Sampled Vol. 1 - 4 [2000-2003] (8 x CDs)

Introducing Virgin Records "Sampled" Compilation Series (2000-2003), this collection is a journey through the original tracks that have shaped countless hits across various genres such as pop, funk, jazz, disco, and more. Spanning 8 CDs, each disc features a diverse range of original songs that have been sampled by artists in commercial dance hits, hip-hop tracks, and beyond.

This series is full of musical gems, offering rare, classic, and curious tracks that were famously sampled to create mainstream and cult classics. It's a collection that caters to ardent trainspotters and lovers of jazz, soul, disco, blues, and contemporary dance music alike. The diversity and reach of these hits, funk classics, and rare grooves are astounding, providing a crash course in the timelessness and endless mutability of great music.

What sets the "Sampled" series apart is its focus on the tracks that hip-hop producers have unearthed from their crates and sampled to craft iconic beats. While many 1980s, 1990s, and early 21st-century tracks may not stand the test of time, the songs collected here retain their soulful and addictive charm, ensuring an enduring appeal. One of the most delightful aspects of the "Sampled" series is the joy of recognizing a given beat or break and experiencing that moment of recognition when music's past and present merge. This compilation is not just about nostalgia; it is about celebrating the artistry and creativity that have kept these tracks relevant and cherished across generations.

The "Sampled" series may not be the first to assemble original recordings, but it is undoubtedly one of the best. The care and attention to detail in curating this collection make it a must-have for anyone passionate about music and its evolution. Don't miss out on a musical adventure in a world where the past meets the present, and every track tells a story. (B)

The track titles are for the actual song that was sample, in brackets are the artist and tracks the sample can be found.
