You’ll find Louis Armstrong teaming up with Andy Iona, Jo Stafford swinging through “Hawaiian War Chant,” and Dorothy Lamour melting through “My Little Grass Shack.” It’s playful, romantic, and occasionally surreal, Ethel Merman and Betty Boop even make cameo appearances.

Disc Two dives into the tiki craze with Splendor in the Grass Shack (1958-1974), where exotica meet surf. Martin Denny, The Ventures, and TV themes like Hawaiian Eye conjure a cocktail-soaked fantasy of island life. 

Disc Three rewinds to Hawaiian Classics (1927-1940), spotlighting native musicians and traditional melodies.

Disc Four, Contemporary Hawaiian Music, adds a twist with novelty gems like “Yiddish Hula Boy” and “Everybody Does It in Hawaii.”

The concept of “Surf Exotica” presents an intriguing blend of two distinct musical genres: “Surf Music” and “Exotica”. This fusion could potentially create a unique auditory experience, combining the energetic rhythm of surf rock with the tropical sounds of exotica.

Originating in the late 1950s, Surf Music is characterized by its instrumental rock and roll music, typically played in a straight 4/4 time signature, with a medium to fast tempo. This genre encapsulates the spirit of the surf culture, with its fast-paced rhythms mirroring the adrenaline rush of riding the waves.

In contrast, Exotica emerged during the same era but offers a different musical experience. It is a form of easy-listening lounge music that borrows elements from world music. However, rather than striving for authentic replication, Exotica focuses on creating a lightweight entertainment experience. It gathers readily identifiable ethnic sounds and blends them into a smooth, easily digested pop form. The term “Exotica” was coined by Simon “Si” Waronker, the co-founder and board chairman of Liberty Records. It represents a tropical ersatz, providing listeners with a pseudo experience of various exotic locales such as insular Oceania, Southeast Asia, Hawaii, the Amazon basin, the Andes, the Caribbean, and tribal Africa.

Presented here are 75 surf exotica tracks, the fusion of these two genres, “Surf Exotica”, combines the instrumental rock and roll elements of Surf Music with the worldly, tropical sounds of Exotica. This fusion results in a unique sound that transports listeners to imagined tropical locales while maintaining the energetic rhythm of surf rock. Although this is a somewhat hypothetical fusion and may not exist as a recognized genre, can be found among surf and easy listening lounge tracks. The exploration of new blends of music is always an exciting journey and I have scoured my collection to find these. The concept of “Surf Exotica” serves as a testament to the limitless possibilities of musical creativity and innovation. (B)

Psychedelic Exotica is a genre that harmoniously fuses the mind-altering influences of Psychedelic music with the tropical charm of Exotica. This genre is a symphony of sound, masterfully crafted from the fusion of two distinct musical styles. 

Psychedelic music, a product of the psychedelic era, aims to mimic and amplify the consciousness-expanding experiences associated with psychedelic substances. It frequently utilizes cutting-edge recording techniques and effects, and finds inspiration in non-Western sources, such as the ragas and drones of Indian music. 

Exotica music, a genre of easy listening that reached its zenith between the late 1950s and mid-1960s, is celebrated for its tropical, pseudo-exotic, and stereotypical portrayals of other cultures. Its popularity was propelled by the 1957 Martin Denny album bearing the same name.The amalgamation of these two genres gives birth to Psychedelic Exotica. 

Added to this compilation's mix are elements of Sci-Fi Space Lounge Jazz sounds. Stereophonic Space Sound Unlimited is a Swiss instrumental duo formed in 1997. The band consists of members Ernest Maeschi and Karen Diblitz, also known as Karen Simpson. An interesting and perhaps lesser-known fact about the duo Stereophonic Space Sound Unlimited is that both members, Ernest and Karen, were previously part of other bands before forming Stereophonic Space Sound Unlimited. Ernest Maeschi was a part of “Hungry for What” and “Midnight to Six”, while Karen Diblitz was a member of “Chin Chin” and "Midnight to Six"

Stereophonic Space Sound Unlimited is a band that has etched a distinctive mark in the realm of instrumental music.
