VA - A Day In My Mind’s Mind Vol.1 - 5 [2005-2018] (5 x CDs)

NEW ZEALAND UNDERGROUND

VA - A Day In My Mind’s Mind Vol.1 - 5 [2005-2018] (5 x CDs)

A Day In My Mind’s Mind is a cultural excavation. Curated by Grant Gillanders, this five-volume set spans over a decade of meticulous research and restoration, documenting New Zealand’s psychedelic and underground music scene from 1966 to 1972. Released across EMI New Zealand and later Frenzy Music, the series stands as a definitive archive of a movement that flourished in isolation, far from the acid-saturated epicenters of London or San Francisco.

What makes the series remarkable is its fidelity to the local context. New Zealand’s geographic and cultural distance meant that psychedelia here was less about drug-fueled excess and more about sonic experimentation. With LSD virtually inaccessible, artists leaned into fuzz pedals, sitars, phasing effects, and surreal lyricism to conjure altered states. The result is a body of work that’s inventive, idiosyncratic, and deeply rooted in Kiwi ingenuity.

Volumes 1 through 3 were issued by EMI between 2005 and 2008, under the stewardship of Chris Caddick and Thierry Pannitier. These editions were later deleted in 2014, making original pressings highly sought-after among collectors. Volume 4 arrived via Frenzy Music in 2014, followed by Volume 5 in 2018, continuing the series’ commitment to unearthing acetates, unreleased demos, and long-lost studio reels. Each disc is packed with rarities, many of which had never seen commercial release, and sequenced with emotional and sonic logic that rewards deep listening.

The series also benefited from Real Groovy Records’ 33⅓ birthday celebration in 2014, which saw a limited-edition double vinyl “best of” curated by Gillanders. This release helped reintroduce the series to a new generation of crate-diggers and psych aficionados.

From the House of Nimrod’s phasing oddities to the Indo-surf stylings of 40 Watt Banana, A Day In My Mind’s Mind captures a scene that thrived on imagination, not imitation. It’s a testament to what happens when artists stretch the limits of their tools, their studios, and their minds, without ever leaving the farthest edge of the map. (B)

VA - Come & See Me. Dream Babes & Rock Chicks [2015] CD1+CD2

AUSZEALAD GIRLS

VA - Come & See Me. Dream Babes & Rock Chicks [2015] CD1+CD2

Back in 2015, RPM Retrodisc teamed up with Frenzy Music to release Come & See Me: Dream Babes & Rock Chicks From Down Under, a glorious 2CD set that shines a spotlight on 1960s female artists from Australia and New Zealand. Think Beat, Mod, Northern Soul, and Psych, all wrapped in vintage sass and swagger.

Curated by Grant Gillanders, this set is a spiritual sibling to RPM’s Dream Babes series, but with a distinctly Antipodean flavor. You get 55 tracks, many of which were never released outside Aus/NZ, and 11 cuts making their CD debut. One track “She Would Not Fade” by SCRA feat. Sheryl Black was previously unreleased altogether, making this a real treat for collectors.

The label spread is impressive: majors like Philips, CBS, HMV, and Polydor rub shoulders with indie gems like Festival, Impact, Zodiac, Clarion, and Allied International. And the mastering by Warren Barnett keeps things crisp without scrubbing away the vintage charm.

Standouts? Plenty. Sandy Edmonds delivers the title track with punch, Toni McCann snarls through “Saturday Date,” and The Chicks channel garage punk energy on “The Rebel Kind.” You’ll also find mod soul from Lynne Randell, Northern stompers from Allison Durbin, and even period ads like “Jet Girl” and “Ginger Group Girl” tucked in for flavor.

The cross-pollination with UK and US sounds is unmistakable, but the local flavor makes it stand out. This is a time machine with a killer soundtrack. (B)

VA - Australia & New Zealand Progressive Rock, The Pioneers (A Butterboy Compilation) (4 x CDs)

PROG ROCK

VA - Australia & New Zealand Progressive Rock, The Pioneers (A Butterboy Compilation) (4 x CDs)

The compilation album "New Zealand Progressive Rock, The Pioneers" is a sonic odyssey that encapsulates the vibrant and experimental spirit of the 1960s and 1970s. While the Australian & Kiwi prog rock scene may not have basked in the global spotlight like its British and American contemporaries, this collection proves that Australia & New Zealand's progressive rock bands were equally pioneering and innovative.

Australia's progressive rock scene during the 1960s and 1970s featured on this compilation highlight tracks from Spectrum, whose experimental approach and complex compositions are perfectly embodied in the iconic track "Superbody", Bakery, hailing from Perth, brings their progressive hard rock sound to the mix with standout tracks like "Holocaust" from their album "Momento". Sebastian Hardie, Australia's first symphonic rock band, graces the compilation with tracks from their album "Four Moments", showcasing lush orchestration and intricate arrangements. Meanwhile, Kahvas Jute offers a distinctly Australian flavor with their blend of progressive rock and standout tracks like "Free." The innovative and experimental spirit of Australian bands that pushed the boundaries of rock music, creating a unique and distinct sound must be heard.

New Zealand's had a number of groundbreaking progressive rock bands such as Tom Thumb and their concept EP "Ludgate Hill" to Ticket's "Dream Chart" from their genre-defining album "Awake" these album offers a rich tapestry of psychedelic and progressive rock. Space Farm's experimental approach and The Human Instinct's evolution from blues-rock to a more intricate progressive style are also beautifully captured. Not to be missed are tracks from Dragon, which, while known for their pop-rock, showcase a progressive edge in "Universal Radio."

"Australia & New Zealand Progressive Rock, The Pioneers is a historical tapestry that celebrates the creativity and daring of Australia & New Zealand musicians who defined the progressive rock music scene in the 60s and 70s. This album is an essential listen for fans and newcomers alike, celebrating the adventurous spirit of an era that continues to inspire.

Both countries had passionate fan bases, but the lack of home-grown progressive rock albums reaching mainstream success was a common theme. Nevertheless, the dedication of these fans and the creativity of the musicians ensured that progressive rock left a lasting impact on the musical landscape of Australia and New Zealand during the 1960s and 1970s (B)

I hope you will enjoy these 100 pioneering progressive rock tracks.

VA - The Kiwi Music Scene 1970 (2 x CDs)

KIWI ROCK

VA - The Kiwi Music Scene 1970 [2023] (2 x CDs)

This is the seventh volume in Frenzy's ongoing series of year-by-year compilations of New Zealand music: 53 tracks and a thousand stories, representing 65% of all local 45rpm releases.

Throughout the 60s, New Zealand had always been three to six months behind overseas music and fashion. By 1970 we were virtually on a par with the overseas scene. There was now a wider musical gap as the rock became heavier and the pop became poppier. The teens that had grown up and lived through the sixties were now young adults and were generally looking for something else, there was a lot to pick from as Rock fused itself with everything from Country to Jazz. Meanwhile the next generation, that had grown up in the shadows of their older brothers and sisters hadn't finished with Pop music just yet while Mums and Dads were still lapping up anything that could be sung along to.

The industry was changing fast with hair getting longer, music getting louder and albums now out selling 45s. It was a good year for local albums albeit the four most notable releases Human Instinct's Burning Up Years, and Stoned Guitar, Gray Bartlett's Fijian Girl and The Underdogs Wasting Our Time were all released as $1.99 budget albums at a time when the retail album price was $4.99, which lead to many people buying because of price and not content, but at least it gave local groups a higher profile and an outlet for their music.

It was a year when many of the top local groups from the previous years split-up as the winds of change enveloped the music scene, including The Chicks, The Dedikation, The Challenge, The Revival, Tom Thumb and The Rebels, while a new crop of Rock groups rose from the ashes including Farmyard, Highway, Rebirth which left one journalist to comment on the new groups as 'NEW NAMES-SAME FACES'. After several years of being Wellington's best kept secret, Quincy Conserve finally stepped out from the shadows on the back of one of the best local singles of the year Ride the Rain a song written by Bruno Lawrence. Bruno is inextricably linked to the group, but he only joined in April and was gone by Christmas.

There had been a drop in new local releases (for various reasons) from the previous year's prominent labels, Zodiac, Impact, Viking, and Allied International etc. Several smaller independent labels sprung up throughout the year Ventura, Climax, Odessa and Pink but like Bruno with Quincy Conserve they were also gone by Christmas. HMV was the only label to regularly release local records throughout the year and beyond and were responsible for nearly half of all local Pop and Rock releases during 1970 (36 approx.).

Kiwis embraced the overseas revival of fifties Rock n Roll culminating in our very own 'King Of Rock & Roll", Johnny Devlin rerecording his 1958 smash Lawdy Miss Clawdy while The Dizzy Limit recorded a pulsating version of Little Richards Good Golly Miss Molly and the Big-O kept the music alive with Hot Rod. KIWI ROCK

VA - Kiwi Rock Classics CD1 - CD6 (A Butterboy Compilation) (6 x CDs)

New Zealand has a rich musical heritage and there are also plenty of excellent artists in New Zealand playing brilliant rock, indie and alternative music. Rock music in New Zealand, also known as Kiwi rock music and New Zealand rock music, began in 1955 with Johnny Cooper's cover version of Bill Haley's hit song "Rock Around the Clock". This was followed by Johnny Devlin, New Zealand's Elvis Presley, and his cover of "Lawdy Miss Clawdy". The 1960s saw Max Merritt and the Meteors and Ray Columbus & the Invaders achieve success. In the 1970s and early 1980's the innovative Split Enz had success internationally as well as nationally, with member Neil Finn later continuing with Crowded House. Other influential bands in the 1970s were Th' Dudes, Dragon and Hello Sailor. The early 1980's saw the development of the indie rock "Dunedin sound", typified by Dunedin bands such as The Clean, Straitjacket Fits and The Chills, recorded by the Flying Nun record label of Christchurch. New Zealand's foremost hard rock band Shihad started their long career in 1988.

Here are 120 tracks that showcase the diversity and talent of the many great Kiwi artists. As usual an eclectic, spanning decades of quality New Zealand tunes. Enjoy.
