Incident Commanders Need More Modern Tools. Traditional incident command still relies on magnets, velcro tags, and whiteboard markers. Everything is built from scratch on the fly, resulting in limited visibility where only a few people on scene actually see how the incident is being divided, grouped, and laid out. IC Mobile was built to change that. We aren't replacing traditional command. We're enhancing it. Built on the foundation of your commanders' existing training and skills, IC Mobile makes it simple to access today's most powerful technology right at their fingertips when they need it most. Key features include: ✅Automated Reminders: PAR updates to keep crews accountable. ✅High-Risk Assignment Tools: Mayday Ready, Vent-Enter-Search (VES), and rescue operations. ✅Live Tracking: True real-time victim and patient tracking. ✅Instant Reference: Your department's SOPs and SOGs built right in. ✅Complete Visibility: Everything is real-time and shareable across all incoming devices. ✅Live Connectivity: Instant notifications for high-level officials and command staff. It’s time to empower your incident commanders with the modern technology they need to drive the best outcomes for their missions. To learn more, visit icmobileapp.com

Justin Brunner's family has been in the fire service since 1926. He is the fourth generation. He is also a proud volunteer firefighter and a certified Fire Instructor in Ontario, and he still writes and runs training for his own department. That matters more than it might sound, because his day job is Chief AI Officer at Ferrous Group, and the fastest way to build bad training software is to stop standing on a drill ground. Justin has been building software for 25 years. He spent 18 of those in post-secondary education as a professor and program coordinator, teaching interactive media and user experience design. Teaching design is where he got the habit he still works by: start with the person who has to use the thing, keep it simple, and test it with real people before you call it finished. He founded Decisolve, the training platform for fire and emergency services, and at Ferrous Group, he leads how AI gets built into the software. In practice, that means taking a department's own SOGs, training manuals, and the NFPA standards they train to, and turning them into the knowledge base the tools work from. He picks which models get used. He tests what they produce against real department material before a trainer ever sees it. Every department's data stays separate. Ask him about the limits of AI and he will talk longer than he does about the capabilities. "AI has to earn its place in the fire service like any probie. It learns the SOGs, it works under someone with experience, and it doesn't get trusted until it's proven itself." That is why an instructor signs off on everything before it goes in front of a crew, and it's why Decisolve scenarios run on real crew sizes and real water supply instead of best-case assumptions. He has made the argument on the International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC) Tech Talk Tuesday podcast and co-wrote an article on AI in fire service training. Decisolve works with departments in Canada and the United States, and partners with XpertVR on the training documentation behind their VR scenarios. When he is not working or at the station, you can usually find Justin somewhere fishing. And each of his tattoos have a story behind them, which he will gladly tell it if you ask. AI earns its place, or it does not get one. That is how Justin thinks and it is how the Ferrous Group builds. #FireService #FireTraining #FireDepartment

  • AI is already in your department. Somebody on your shift has used it this week to draft a report, study for a promotional exam, or check a code question, even if nobody told you. That was the starting point for "AI for the Fire Service," the session I taught at the OAFTO Ontario Association of Fire Training Officers 2026 Instructor Development Conference. The room was filled with instructors and chiefs, and a good number of them are skeptical about this stuff. That's fair. I came to it from a strange angle myself. Twenty five years building software, seventeen years teaching post-secondary, and a Fire Service Instructor certification I went and earned because I did not want to be the software guy explaining the fire service to firefighters. My argument was that awareness has to come before policy. You cannot guide how a tool gets used in your department if you do not know it is already being used, or by whom, or for what. Instructors see it first. That puts you in a better position to shape it than anyone else in the org chart. The best part was the questions, during the session and at the booth afterward. And yes, that includes the questions I'm still figuring out myself. Thanks again to OAFTO Ontario Association of Fire Training Officers for the invitation and for the conversations. If AI is showing up in your department and you are not sure what to do about it yet, that is the normal place to be. I want to hear what you are seeing. - Justin Brunner #FireService #FireTraining #FireDepartment

Firefighters want to train. The problem is finding enough time, resources and opportunities to do it. More than 1,300 firefighters weighed in for FireRescue1's 2026 "What Firefighters Want" report. 60% identified scheduling conflicts and lack of time as their biggest barrier to training. Yet only 12% said VR, AR or advanced simulation makes up more than a quarter of their department's training. Evan Sitler-Bates contributed to the conversation alongside Scott Roseberry of the IAFC Technology Council and Justin Brunner of Decisolve, looking at where VR and AI can realistically help close that gap. Because the hardest scenarios are often the hardest ones to recreate consistently. So if your department could train more often on one thing, what would it be? • New industry data confirms exactly what we've been saying. FireRescue1 just published its 2026 "What Firefighters Want" survey — over 1,300 firefighters weighed in, and a few numbers stood out: 🔥 Only 37% rate their department's training as very good or excellent. 🔥 For 6 out of 10 firefighters, the problem isn't motivation. It's finding the time. And here’s what really got our attention: 80% of departments say artificial intelligence (AI) or virtual reality (VR) tools make up little to none of their training. That gap — willing firefighters, under-resourced systems — is exactly what we built Decisolve to help close. Our Founder Justin Brunner wrote the report's piece on AI and VR training, alongside Scott Roseberry (Battalion Chief, Garland TX Fire Dept. and Chair of the IAFC Technology Council) and Evan Sitler-Bates of XpertVR. Their argument: AI earns its place in training when it generates and adapts scenarios, surfaces patterns for after-action review, and handles admin load — always with a qualified instructor reviewing before anything reaches a trainee. That last point matters to us as much as it does to them. If you're at #FRI2026 this week, some of this conversation probably sounds familiar — Ferrous Group Founder Chris Gott is on the floor if you want to swap notes. Government procurement is broken. I've been saying it for years. The big primes win because they can write 80-page proposals and wait 18 months for an award. Small Canadian companies can't do either alone. So 4 of us did the obvious thing. We teamed up. We're calling it the Canadian Training Technology Consortium. - Frontier Metrology Inc captures real environments with LiDAR and photogrammetry - XpertVR builds the VR scenarios trainees run inside those environments - Cognitive3D measures what trainees actually do in the headset, down to gaze, hesitation, and decisions - Decisolve sits on top with AI, turning all of it into smarter lesson plans Capture, train, measure, improve. One prime contract. One point of accountability. 4 teams of specialists behind it. We get asked all the time why we don't just merge. Easy answer: depth is the value. Each of us has spent years going deep on one piece. Frontier on capture, us on VR, Cognitive3D on analytics, Decisolve on AI. Smashing it into one company would slow each team down and dilute the parts that make us useful. This is built for defence, public safety, and industrial training, where the buyer wants Canadian content, the right clearances, and a complete capability under one contract. It's working. We're already talking to other Canadian companies about second and third groupings in adjacent areas. If you're a procurement officer or program lead looking at XR training, I'd love to walk you through what this looks like in practice. If you're a Canadian or allied company in fire, public safety, paramedicine, or industrial training and you're tired of losing bids to bigger incumbents, send me a message. We're actively expanding the network. Full write-up in the comments.
