There are a few reasons you would need to sand or strip completely, so I’ll share those reasons below.

⚪️ When do I need to sand? ALWAYS. It is best practice to always sand before applying any paint, even if it is chalk paint—or at least a good sander/deglosser, but my personal preference is traditional sanding. The good news is you don’t have to sand the existing finish COMPLETELY off. Many refer to this as “scuff sanding” though I think that term is more for sanding between coats.
