A blog devoted to the cards I make in my tiny upstairs space. When my sister stays there, she calls it an "artist's garret". I'm not an artist, but am an enthusiastic cardmaker - hence the title "Cardmaker's Garret".

An Inspired Window with a Wreath

I was looking at the SCS Inspiration Challenge on the weekend and saw an image that immediately inspired this card:

The inspiration was from a Pinterest page for a company called HomeBNC.  Here's the photo that inspired me:

Here are the steps for creating my card:

I took a piece of wood grain cs and lightly rubbed Frayed Burlap Distress ink over it to make the wood grain show up more.

I die cut the window twice and glued them together for more dimension and painted patches of Hickory Smoke Distress ink on the top one to give it a more rustic aged look.

I created the wreath by die cutting a thin circle and punch many pine branches with the old Martha Stewart punch out of various dps that were mostly green. I glued them to the circle, added it to the window, and added a few white pearl embellishments.

I finished with a vertical sentiment stamped in Hickory Smoke on a narrow strip edged with more Hickory Smoke ink.

As well as the SCS challenge, I'm adding it to:

Reindeer and Christmas Leaves

I've been entertaining two of my sisters who came to visit this month from back east so not much time for creating or blogging.  But finally a chance to catch up with some challenges.

Sparkles Christmas Challenge is "Include a Reindeer".

I inked up the trees with brown Distress ink and the shadows on the ground with grey, inking up and stamping in my MISTI until I got a good impression. I then cleaned the stamp (while it was still in the MISTI), reinked it with Versamark, stamped over the coloured stamping, and heat embossed in clear. That way I had a resist for my background sponging. I used various yellow and blue Distress inks to sponge the sky.

I added a die cut reindeer and sentiment.

Christmas Cards All Year Round wants to see "Christmas garlands, leaves, or flowers".

I stamped and heat embossed in silver, added a small part of a longer sentiment, mounted on a silver card base, and embellished the berries with silver gemstones.  A perfect CAS card for making multiples if one was so inclined!

Supplies for the 1st card:
Stamps - Penny Black woods
Ink - Versamark, various Distress inks
Paper - brown, cream, and mixed media cs
Size - 6x4.25"
Accessories - Dee's Distinctively reindeer, Tattered Lace sentiment die, clear embossing powder

Supplies for the 2nd card:
Stamps - Penny Black A Berry Branch, part of a SU sentimen
Ink - ColorBox silver
Paper - white and silver cs
Size - A2
Accessories - silver embossing powder, silver gemstones

Three Wooden Snowflakes

December's AAA Cards challenge is:

And 52 Christmas Card Throwdown wants us to choose one of the 2017 challenges.  I had such a hard time chosing as there were lots of challenges that appealed to me so I chose two.  I posted the first one yesterday and now here's the second one from October 2017:

I went with three wooden snowflakes.

A very simple card with a rectangle of thin cork stuck to my card base, wooden snowflakes on top of it, and then a stamped vertical sentiment.

Has anyone heard how well these wooden snowflakes go through the mail?  They seem kind of fragile to me!

Supplies:
Stamps - Impression Obsession sentiment
Ink - Distress Oxide Vintage Photo
Paper - rustic white cs
Size - A2
Accessories - wooden snowflakes, thin cork

Cork with Wooden Snowflake

A new challenge from CAS Mix Up (and did I ever find this a challenge - took me ages to come up with an idea!):

I found some cork tags in a dollar store and decided to use one of those.  My first idea was a birthday card with a stamped sentiment and a small die cut on the tag, but then I remembered my old SU wooden snowflakes and I liked the idea of the combination of wood and cork.

My criteria for choosing a sentiment to stamp was that it fit the width of the tag and was a fairly thick / heavy font so that it would show up on the cork.  I found the perfect one, put it and the tag in my MISTI and stamped it a couple of times with StazOn ink until it was dark enough.

I used an embossing folder I've had for awhile but never used.  It's quite a neat one.  It both debosses and embosses at the same time - I really like the effect.  I embossed it on cream cs and layered over a kraft card base.

CAS Mix Up is open until February 24th for you to link up a card.  Please be sure that it is clean and simple, and that it includes felt, cork, or canvas, stamping, and one other thing of your choice - I have wood and dry embossing.   For inspiration, check out the cards by the rest of the Design Team and our February Guest Designer, Marianne (Marianne's Cards 'n stuff).

Supplies:
Stamps - PTI sentiment
Ink - StazOn black
Paper - cream and kraft cs
Size - A2
Accessories - Forever in Time Paper Crafts cork tag, SU wooden snowflake, Ultimate Crafts Snowflake Frame embossing folder

Needlepoint-Inspired Snow

This week, Merry Monday's challenge is Let It Snow:

I was inspired by something I saw when on needlepoint.com:

I love that Nordic look and in fact I have a red winter sweater with white snowflakes in that style.  Here's my card:

I used my Tim Holtz stencil with white embossing paste on red cs. I layered a sentiment tag over a section of embossing that smudged badly.   I used "let it snow" as the sentiment in keeping with the Merry Monday challenge and embellished with a wooden snowflake.

I'm also posting it on SCS for the Inspiration Challenge.

Supplies:
Stamps - unknown sentiment
Ink - ColorBox Chianti
Paper - red and white cs
Size - A2
Accessories - Tim Holtz stencil, Dreamweaver white embossing paste, clear embossing powder, SU wooden snowflake, Nesties sentiment label, seam binding, fun foam
