With the Changes is an exploration of contemporary repertoire for the wind symphony through the context of small group jazz performances. Inspired by listening to the heavily jazz influenced works of Kevin Day, Katahj Copley, and Omar Thomas, I thought to myself: this is just a big band with oboes and french horn! With this realization, I arranged their pieces for another type of jazz ensemble. One that is able to thoroughly represent their works while leaving abundant space for extended and exciting improvised moments — the quintet.

After a Wind Symphony rehearsal with visiting composers Katahj Copley and Kevin Day, I began to lightly play solo piano versions of their pieces as the rest of the ensemble packed up. Reading off of my handwritten charts made during long sections of rests, our bassist Sean Hannon joined to make it a duet. As the two composers walked by to hear us play, Day suddenly exclaimed, “this is my piece!”. Copley stepped closer and saw my lead sheet for Day's "Deep Blue". It was just the melody line scribbled down with a few chord changes written as symbols above the staff, a far cry from the 11x17 score our conductor had been working off of. Copley turned to Day and shouted "that's 'Deep Blue'! With the changes!" to which Day replied with a nod, "with the changes".
