A fictionalized account of the author's tour of Italy, published in the guise of a melancholy young lady's memoir. At the end of the text, the "author" becomes increasingly ill and dies. In fact, Jameson wrote the book while traveling in Europe as a family governess, and included genuine observations of European sights as well as character descriptions.
