| Title | NA48 prototype calorimeter |
| Description | This is a calorimeter, a detector which measures the energy of particles. When in use, it is filled with liquid krypton at -152°C. Electrons and photons passing through interact with the krypton, creating a shower of charged particles which are collected on the copper ribbons. The ribbons are aligned to an accuracy of a tenth of a millimetre. The folding at each end allows them to be kept absolutely flat. Each shower of particles also creates a signal in scintillating material embedded in the support disks. These flashes of light are transmitted to electronics by the optical fibres along the side of the detector. They give the time at which the interaction occurred. The photo shows the calorimeter at NA48, a CERN experiment which is trying to understand the lack of anti-matter in the Universe today. |
| Description (French) | Ceci est un calorimètre: un détecteur apte à mesurer l'énergie des particules. Il contient du krypton liquide à -152°C. Les électrons et les positons qui le traversent interagissent avec le krypton, créant une gerbe de particules. Les électrons et les ions provenant du krypton, alors ionisé, sont collectés par les rubans de cuivre. Chaque gerbe de particules génère également un signal dans les matériaux scintillateurs installés dans les disques de support. Ces éclairs de lumière sont transmis à l'électronique d'acquisition par des fibres optiques courant le long du détecteur. Ce sont elles qui indiquent à quel moment précis s'est produit l'interaction. Les rubans sont positionnés avec une précision du dixième de millimètre. L'ondulation à chacune de leurs extrémités permet de les maintenir absolument plats. Cette image représente le calorimètre de NA48, une expérience du CERN qui a pour but de comprendre le déficit d'antimatière dans l'univers actuel. |
