| Title | first tank of Linac 1 |
| Description | This was the first tank of the linear accelerator Linac1, the injection system for the Proton Synchrotron, It ran for 34 years (1958 - 1992). Protons entered at the far end and were accelerated between the copper drift tubes by an oscillating electromagnetic field. The field flipped 200 million times a second (200 MHz) so the protons spent 5 nanoseconds crossing a drift tube and a gap. Moving down the tank, the tubes and gaps had to get longer as the protons gained speed. The tank accelerated protons from 500 KeV to 10 MeV. Linac1 was also used to accelerate deutrons and alpha particles for the Intersecting Storage Rings and oxygen and sulpher ions for the Super Proton Synchrotron heavy ion programme. |
| Description (French) | Ceci fut la première enceinte de l'accélérateur linéaire Linac1, le système d'injection pour le Synchrotron à Proton (PS). Il fonctionna pendant 34 ans (1958-1992). Les protons entraient à l'extrémité et étaient accélérés entre les tubes de dérive en cuivre par un champ électromagnétique alternatif. Le champ oscillait 200 millions de fois par seconde (200 MHz) si bien que les protons mettaient 5 nanosecondes pour traverser un tube de dérive et un trou. L'enceinte accélérait les protons de 500 KeV à 10 Mev. Le Linac1 fut également utilise pour accélérer des deuterons et des particules alpha pour les Anneaux de Stockage à Intersection et des ions oxygène et soufre dans le cadre du programme ions lourds du Super Synchrotron à Proton (SPS). |
