A Radiation-Tolerant All-Digital Phase-Locked Loop With Fast Recovery From Single-Event Effects / Ma, Qichao (Leuven U.) ; Biereigel, Stefan (CERN) ; Leroux, Paul (Leuven U.) ; Prinzie, Jeffrey (Leuven U.)
This article presents a radiation-tolerant all-digital phase-locked loop (ADPLL) with fast recovery from single-event effects (SEEs) occurring in the inductor of the LC oscillator. The proposed ADPLL can detect the phase error due to SEEs and track the frequency error by switching the bandwidth of the loop. [...]

Understanding Inductor-Originated Single-Event Frequency Transients in CMOS LC -Tank Oscillators: Causes, Effects, and System Impacts / Adom-Bamfi, Gideon (Leuven U.) ; Ma, Qichao (Leuven U.) ; Biereigel, Stefan (CERN) ; Leroux, Paul (Leuven U.) ; Prinzie, Jeffrey (Leuven U.)
Single-event frequency transients (SEFTs) in integrated complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) LC-tank voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) and digitally-controlled oscillator (DCO), widely used in frequency synthesizer circuits, have recently been observed and linked to single-event effects (SEEs) in on-chip planar spiral inductors. This work provides an explanation of the underlying causes of these transients, presenting, for the first time, a general model to characterize their behavior and examine their system-level impact. First results of an evaluation of $^{100}$Gb/s Ethernet as a future HEP readout link / Stümpert, Valentin (CERN ; KIT, Karlsruhe, IPE) ; Klekotko, Adam (CERN ; Leuven U.) ; Perro, Alberto (CERN ; Aix-Marseille U.) ; Sigaud, Christophe Gabriel (CERN) ; Montesinos, Daniel Hernandez (CERN) ; Martina, Francesco (CERN) ; Vichoudis, Paschalis (CERN) ; Baron, Sophie (CERN) ; Biereigel, Stefan (CERN)
This work presents first results from a feasibility study to qualify commercial 100 Gb/s Ethernet as a readout link for future high-energy physics detectors. The motivation for this work is to examine the possibility of reading out future detector front-ends directly via commercial, high bandwidth, cost-optimized data centers, without the need of the intermediate custom-link/hardware layer used for this purpose thus far. Single-Event Effect Responses of CMOS Integrated Planar Multiturn Inductors in LC-Tank Oscillators Under Heavy-Ion Microbeam Irradiation / Adom-Bamfi, Gideon (Leuven U.) ; Biereigel, Stefan (CERN) ; Leroux, Paul (Leuven U.) ; Prinzie, Jeffrey (Leuven U.)
This article presents detailed measurements of a novel radiation effect caused by the sensitivity of on-chip spiral inductors to ionizing particles, leading to single-event frequency transients (SEFTs) in LC-tank oscillators. Quantitative experimental results from heavy-ion microbeam irradiation of two-turn and four-turn inductor samples are presented. [...]

Source Switched Charge-Pump PLLs for High-Dose Radiation Environments / Prinzie, Jeffrey (Leuven U.) ; Biereigel, Stefan (CERN) ; Kulis, Szymon (CERN) ; Leitao, Pedro (CERN) ; Moreira, Paulo (CERN)
This article presents a radiation tolerant charge-pump phase-locked loop (PLL) with low static phase error variability suitable for high-performance clock systems in high-dose radiation environments. We investigate the use of source switching charge-pump architectures to minimize any voltage- or dose-dependent charge injection and address the limitations of enclosed layout transistors (ELTs) in the conventional drain switched charge-pump.
