Plasma treated metals after H$^-$ irradiation and its effect on vacuum breakdown behaviour / Serafim, C. (CERN ; Helsinki Inst. of Phys.) ; Calatroni, S. (CERN) ; Djurabekova, F. (Helsinki Inst. of Phys.) ; Giordano, M.C. (CERN) ; Himmerlich, M. (CERN) ; Bjelland, V. (CERN ; Norwegian U. Sci. Tech.) ; Kouzios, C. (CERN) ; Pinto, P. Costa (CERN) ; Perez-Fontenla, A.T. (CERN) ; Wuensch, W. (CERN) et al.
Vacuum breakdown in accelerator structures is a critical challenge that occurs under high electric fields. In environments subjected to hydrogen ion irradiation or high beam losses, such as in Radio-Frequency Quadrupoles (RFQ), residual hydrocarbons from the vacuum may result in carbon contamination of the metal surfaces from charged particle induced cracking. This work studies the suitability of a set of different materials for manufacturing of more efficient and durable Radio-Frequency Quadrupole (RFQ) structures compared to that currently used in many linear particle accelerators, traditionally made out of copper. RFQs are susceptible to vacuum breakdowns caused by the exposure to high electric fields, resulting in surface degradation. [...]

A Linear Collider Vision for the Future of Particle Physics / Linear Collider Vision Collaboration
In this paper we review the physics opportunities at linear $e^+e^-$ colliders with a special focus on high centre-of-mass energies and beam polarisation, take a fresh look at the various accelerator technologies available or under development and, for the first time, discuss how a facility first equipped with a technology mature today could be upgraded with technologies of tomorrow to reach much higher energies and/or luminosities. Performance of laser patterned copper plasmonic photocathodes / Martinez-Calderon, M (CERN) ; Groussin, B (CERN) ; Bjelland, V (CERN ; Norwegian U. Sci. We study ultrafast laser surface nanopatterning as an alternative to improve the photo-emissive properties of metallic photocathodes. By tailoring the physical dimensions of these surface nanostructures, one can localize the optical field intensity and exploit plasmonic effects occurring in such nanostructures. [...]

Diffractive order Mueller matrix ellipsometry for the design and manufacture of polarization beam splitting metasurfaces / Bjelland, Victoria M (Norwegian U. Sci. Tech.) ; Bjelland, Victoria M (CERN) ; Hale, Nathan (Norwegian U. Sci. Tech.) ; Schwarz, Niklas (Norwegian U. Sci. Tech.) ; Vala, Daniel (Ostrava, Tech. U.) ; Høvik, Jens (Norwegian U. Sci. Optical metasurface technology promises an important potential for replacing bulky traditional optical components, in addition to enabling new compact and lightweight metasurface-based devices. Since even subtle imperfections in metasurface design or manufacture strongly affect their performance, there is an urgent need to develop proper and accurate protocols for their characterization, allowing for efficient control of the fabrication. Vacuum ultraviolet optical properties of GaSb determined by synchrotron rotating analyzer ellipsometry: applications in nanopillars and plasmonics / Hale, Nathan (Norwegian U. Sci. Tech.) ; Bjelland, Victoria M (CERN ; Norwegian U. Sci. Tech.) ; Cobet, Christoph (Linz U.) ; Esser, Norbert (Berlin, Tech. U.) ; Kildemo, Morten (Norwegian U. Sci. Tech.)
The vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) optical properties in the range 4 eV to 15 eV of GaSb have been determined by rotating analyzer ellipsometry (RAE) using synchrotron light. The localized surface plasmon resonances (LSPRs) and surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) are studied as a means to understand the plasmonic behavior of GaSb. [...]

Hot electron enhanced photoemission from laser fabricated plasmonic photocathodes / Martinez-Calderon, Miguel (CERN) ; Groussin, Baptiste (CERN) ; Bjelland, Victoria (CERN ; Norwegian U. Sci. Photocathodes are key elements in high-brightness electron sources and ubiquitous in the operation of large-scale accelerators, although their operation is often limited by their quantum efficiency and lifetime. Here, we propose to overcome these limitations by utilizing direct-laser nanostructuring techniques on copper substrates, improving their efficiency and robustness for next-generation electron photoinjectors.
