New Generation Energy Extraction Systems for the High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider Project at CERN / Panev, B I (CERN) ; Pojer, M (CERN) ; Mateos, F Rodriguez (CERN) ; Coelingh, G J (CERN) ; Grigorov, M (CERN) ; Georgakakis, S (CERN) ; Borkowski, P (Lodz, Tech. U.) ; Rodak, M (Lodz, Tech. U.) ; Sienicki, A (Lodz, Tech. U.) ; Wojcik, F (Lodz, Tech. U.)
A new, high-speed, and high-current DC switching technology based on commercial medium-voltage vacuum interrupters was explored and successfully validated for future use in the energy extraction systems (EES) to protect the superconducting magnet circuits at CERN. In the development process, two types of systems were produced, one rated for 2 kA and another for 600 A. [...]

Design, manufacturing and validation of the new quench heater discharge power supplies for the protection of superconducting magnets for the High-Luminosity LHC Project at CERN / Carrillo, David (CERN) ; Berberat, Raphael (CERN) ; Georgakakis, Spyridon (CERN) ; Guasch-Martinez, Josep (CERN) ; Lopez Cordoncillo, Denisse (CERN) ; de Nicolás Lumbreras, Enrique (CERN) ; Nowak, Edward (CERN) ; Papamichali, Maria (CERN) ; Pojer, Mirko (CERN) ; Rodriguez Mateos, Felix (CERN) et al.
The Quench Heater Discharge Power Supplies (HDS) are magnet protection devices installed in the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) that, upon detection of a magnet quench, release energy into strip heaters that are in thermal contact with the superconducting coils, inducing a resistive transition all along the coils. The new HDS design for protection of the High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) Inner Triplet magnets calls for a more advanced design with up-to-date components resulting in a high reliability of the HDS units. Design, manufacturing and validation of the CLIQ units for the protection of superconducting magnets for the High-Luminosity LHC project at CERN / Carrillo, David (CERN) ; Berberat, Raphael (CERN) ; Favre, Mathieu (CERN) ; Georgakakis, Spyridon (CERN) ; Guasch-Martinez, Josep (CERN) ; Lopez Cordoncillo, Denisse (CERN) ; de Nicolás Lumbreras, Enrique (CERN) ; Nowak, Edward (CERN) ; Pojer, Mirko (CERN) ; Rodriguez Mateos, Felix (CERN) et al.
The novel Coupling-Loss-Induced-Quench (CLIQ) concept will be part of the quench protection system of the superconducting Inner Triplet magnets of the High Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC) upgrade at CERN. Several units of two distinct CLIQ prototype variants were produced to validate the CLIQ protection concept and define the system parameters for the required performance. [...]

Quench detection and diagnostic systems for the superconducting circuits for the HL-LHC / Denz, Reiner (CERN) ; Blasco Serrano, Daniel (Madrid, CIEMAT ; CERN) ; Calcoen, Daniel (CERN) ; De Matteis, Ernesto (CERN) ; Froidbise, Vincent (CERN) ; Georgakakis, Spyridon (CERN) ; Haas, Severin (CERN) ; Mundra, Surbhi (CERN) ; Podzorny, Tomasz (CERN) ; Siemko, Andrzej (CERN) et al.
The High Luminosity Upgrade of the LHC [1] will incorporate a new generation of superconducting elements such as high field superconducting magnets based on Nb$_3$Sn conductors and MgB$_2$ high temperature superconducting links for magnet powering. The proper protection and diagnostics of those elements require the development of a new generation of integrated quench detection and data acquisition systems as well as novel methods for quench detection. Development of a Digital Quench Detection System for Nb$_3$Sn Magnets and First Measurements on Prototype Magnets / Steckert, Josef (CERN) ; Kopal, Josef (CERN) ; Bajas, Hugues (CERN) ; Denz, Reiner (CERN) ; Georgakakis, Spyridon (CERN) ; De Matteis, Ernesto (CERN) ; Spasic, Jelena (CERN) ; Siemko, Andrzej (CERN)
The High Luminosity upgrade for the Large Hadron Collider LHC (HL-LHC) requires new Nb$_3$Sn superconducting magnets and it triggers a development of novel hardware for the quench detection system (QDS) based on a field programmable gate array (FPGA) digital platform and a number of individually isolated analogue front-ends. Galvanic insulation has been implemented downstream the analogue to digital convertors to eliminate a usage of analogue isolation amplifiers. [...]

An Enhanced Quench Detection System for Main Quadrupole Magnets in the Large Hadron Collider / Spasic, Jelena (CERN) ; Calcoen, Daniel (CERN) ; Denz, Reiner (CERN) ; Froidbise, Vincent (CERN) ; Georgakakis, Spyridon (CERN) ; Podzorny, Tomasz (CERN) ; Siemko, Andrzej (CERN) ; Steckert, Jens (CERN)
To further improve the performance and reliability of the quench detection system (QDS) for main quadrupole magnets in the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), there is a planned upgrade of the system during the long shutdown period of the LHC in 2019-2020. While improving the already existing functionalities of quench detection for quadrupole magnets and field-bus data acquisition, the enhanced QDS will incorporate new functionalities to strengthen and improve the system operation and maintenance. Overview of high level synthesis tools / Evans, J (CERN) ; Georgakakis, S (Athens, Educational Tech. Inst.)
High Level Synthesis takes an abstract behavioural or algorithmic description of a digital system and creates a register transfer level structure that realises the described behaviour. Various methodologies have been developed to perform such synthesis tasks. [...]
