Exploring New Physics with O(keV) Electron Recoils in Direct Detection Experiments
/ Bloch, Itay M. (Tel Aviv U.) ; Caputo, Andrea (Valencia U., IFIC) ; Essig, Rouven (YITP, Stony Brook) ; Redigolo, Diego (CERN ; INFN, Florence ; Florence U.) ; Sholapurkar, Mukul (YITP, Stony Brook) ; Volansky, Tomer (Tel Aviv U.)
Motivated by the recent XENON1T results, we explore various new physics models that can be discovered through searches for electron recoils in O(keV)-threshold direct-detection experiments. First, we consider the absorption of light bosons, either as dark matter relics or being produced directly in the Sun. [...]

Direct Detection of Strongly Interacting Sub-GeV Dark Matter via Electron Recoils
/ Emken, Timon (Southern Denmark U., CP3-Origins ; Chalmers U. Tech.) ; Essig, Rouven (YITP, Stony Brook) ; Kouvaris, Chris (Southern Denmark U., CP3-Origins ; CERN) ; Sholapurkar, Mukul (YITP, Stony Brook)
We consider direct-detection searches for sub-GeV dark matter via electron scatterings in the presence of large interactions between dark and ordinary matter. Scatterings both on electrons and nuclei in the Earth's crust, atmosphere, and shielding material attenuate the expected local dark matter flux at a terrestrial detector, so that such experiments lose sensitivity to dark matter above some critical cross section. Long-Lived Particles at the Energy Frontier: The MATHUSLA Physics Case
/ Curtin, David (Toronto U.) ; Drewes, Marco (Louvain U., CP3) ; McCullough, Matthew (CERN) ; Meade, Patrick (YITP, Stony Brook) ; Mohapatra, Rabindra N. (Maryland U.) ; Shelton, Jessie (Illinois U., Urbana) ; Shuve, Brian (Harvey Mudd Coll. ; SLAC) ; Accomando, Elena (Southampton U.) ; Alpigiani, Cristiano (Washington U., Seattle) ; Antusch, Stefan (Basel U.) et al.
We examine the theoretical motivations for long-lived particle (LLP) signals at the LHC in a comprehensive survey of Standard Model (SM) extensions. LLPs are a common prediction of a wide range of theories that address unsolved fundamental mysteries such as naturalness, dark matter, baryogenesis and neutrino masses, and represent a natural and generic possibility for physics beyond the SM (BSM). The Sub-Electron-Noise Skipper CCD Experimental Instrument (SENSEI) uses the recently developed Skipper-CCD technology to search for electron recoils from the interaction of sub-GeV dark matter particles with electrons in silicon. We report first results from a prototype SENSEI detector, which collected 0.019 gram-days of commissioning data above ground at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. [...]
