Doppler and sympathetic cooling for the investigation of short-lived radioactive ions / Sels, S (CERN ; Leuven U.) ; Maier, F M (CERN ; Greifswald U.) ; Au, M (CERN ; Mainz U.) ; Fischer, P (Greifswald U.) ; Kanitz, C (CERN) ; Lagaki, V (CERN ; Greifswald U.) ; Lechner, S (CERN ; TU Vienna) ; Leistenschneider, E (CERN) ; Leimbach, D (CERN ; Mainz U., Inst. Phys. ; U. Gothenburg (main)) ; Lykiardopoulou, E M (British Columbia U. ; TRIUMF) et al.
At radioactive ion beam (RIB) facilities, ions of short-lived radionuclides are cooled and bunched in buffergas-filled Paul traps to improve the ion-beam quality for subsequent experiments. To deliver even colder ions, beneficial to RIB experiments’ sensitivity or accuracy, we employ Doppler and sympathetic cooling in a Paul trap cooler-buncher. [...]

Nuclear moments of indium isotopes reveal abrupt change at magic number 82 / Vernon, A R (Manchester U. ; MIT ; Leuven U.) ; Garcia Ruiz, R F (MIT ; CERN) ; Miyagi, T (TRIUMF) ; Binnersley, C L (Manchester U.) ; Billowes, J (Manchester U.) ; Bissell, M L (Manchester U.) ; Bonnard, J (York U., England) ; Cocolios, T E (Leuven U.) ; Dobaczewski, J (York U., England) ; Farooq-Smith, G J (Leuven U.) et al.
In spite of the high-density and strongly correlated nature of the atomic nucleus, experimental and theoretical evidence suggests that around particular ‘magic’ numbers of nucleons, nuclear properties are governed by a single unpaired nucleon$^{1,2}$. A microscopic understanding of the extent of this behaviour and its evolution in neutron-rich nuclei remains an open question in nuclear physics$^{3–5}$. [...]

A concept for the extraction of the most refractory elements at CERN-ISOLDE as carbonyl complex ions / Ballof, J. (CERN ; Mainz U.) ; Chrysalidis, K. (CERN ; Mainz U., Inst. Phys.) ; Düllmann, Ch. E. (Mainz U. ; Darmstadt, GSI ; Helmholtz Inst., Mainz) ; Fedosseev, V. (CERN) ; Granados, E. (CERN) ; Leimbach, D. (CERN ; Mainz U., Inst. Phys.) ; Marsh, B.A. (CERN) ; Ramos, J.P. (CERN ; Ecole Polytechnique, Lausanne ; SCK-CEN, Mol) ; Ringvall-Moberg, A. (CERN ; U. Gothenburg (main)) ; Rothe, S. (CERN) et al.
We introduce a novel thick-target concept tailored to the extraction of refractory 4d and 5d transition metal radionuclides of molybdenum, technetium, ruthenium and tungsten for radioactive ion beam production. Despite the more than 60-year old history of thick-target ISOL mass-separation facilities like ISOLDE, the extraction of the most refractory elements as radioactive ion beam has so far not been successful. CERN Accelerators Beam Optimization Algorithm / Piselli, Emiliano (CERN) ; Akroh, Abdelouahid (CERN) ; Blaum, Klaus (Heidelberg, Max Planck Inst.) ; Door, Menno (Heidelberg, Max Planck Inst.) ; Leimbach, David (Mainz U., Inst. Kernphys. ; CERN) ; Rothe, Sebastian (CERN)
In experimental physics, computer algorithms are used to make decisions to perform measurements and different types of operations. To create a useful algorithm, the optimization parameters should be based on real time data. [...]

Determination of the electron affinity of astatine / Leimbach, D (Mainz U. ; CERN ; U. Gothenburg (main)) ; Rothe, S (CERN) ; Sundberg, J (U. Gothenburg (main)) ; Hanstorp, D (U. Gothenburg (main)) /IS615 Collaboration
Astatine is a promising candidate for targeted alpha therapy in nuclear medicine. However, due to its scarce nature, some of its fundamental properties that determine its chemical characteristics such as the electron affinity, the binding erergy of the additional electron in a negative ion, are still unknown. [...]

The electron affinity of astatine / Leimbach, David (CERN ; U. Gothenburg (main) ; Mainz U., Inst. Phys.) ; Karls, Julia (U. Gothenburg (main)) ; Guo, Yangyang (U. Groningen, VSI) ; Chrysalidis, Katerina (CERN ; Mainz U., Inst. Phys.) ; Eliav, Ephraim (Tel Aviv U. (main)) et al.
One of the most important properties influencing the chemical behavior of an element is the electron affinity (EA). Among the remaining elements with unknown EA is astatine, where one of its isotopes, $^{211}$At, is remarkably well suited for targeted radionuclide therapy of cancer. [...]
