I have hundreds of black metal albums in my collection, and Exercises in Futility has outsold them all, making it my most popular Bandcamp purchase. That's no coincidence: Mgła is an elite act, with an extraordinary ability to craft melodies that are heavy yet never overbearing, and always addictive. Playback value never seems to fade, and there's not a weak track on the album. An exceptional black metal release that has stood the test of time and will continue to do so. 10/10.

Much like Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Necrophagist are a great band who spawned thousands of soulless and irritating imitators, whose grim legacy has sadly led to a negative appraisal as time has gone on. While its sound is perhaps a little too clean for my taste, Epitaph remains an impressively dedicated work full of forward momentum and gnarled hooks.

Tomb of the Mutilated is one of the most iconic death metal albums ever, thanks to 'Hammer Smashed Face.' Seeing it in Ace Ventura blew me away. I only had the Vile CD back then, but Tomb, with Chris Barnes's classic vocals, delivered a fresh, crushing sound. 'Post Mortal Ejaculation' was — and still is — my favorite of the album: the slowed shift at 2:06, the piercing scream as the drums kick in, then the ferocious blast beats at 2:51. So many twists, and so brutal, especially for its time.
