This is the most excited I've been about a Katatonia record in a long time! It feels questioning and exploring, whereas the modus operandi for so long seemed to be "all answers" alt rock (not very exciting). The new guitarists seem to be contributing new ideas - some parts seem almost like djent gone doom, which could be iffy except that it somehow ends up in that area where Opeth fans for so long wished them to return to. Even if the unpredictability is a little bumpy, it feel fresh.

Awesome songwriting and a perfect balance between melody and brutality — both in the vocals and the overall sound. Ascension is Paradise Lost at their sharpest, and honestly the best they’ve released to this day.

Like the dawn breaking over the land, a tiny bit then all at once, I was not sure about this record at first, and then was nearly in tears by the end. A flood of emotion like the light of day haloing the dark mountains, then piercing night in blazing rays and drowning all in sun. Every song seemed to surpass the previous. A deep well of feeling, meaning, spirituality, yearning, of connecting to the sandy lands of Elsewhere. I will treasure this album as art sculpted from the human soul.
